    Finally going to do it!

Hi all! I've been thinking about this for years on & off but now I think its time to go for it. I'm 35, a midwife and a single mum of an 11 year old daughter. She's very keen & can't wait! Any advice on what our first steps should be? Can anyone recommend a good agent (& reasonable!) Just in the process of trying to sell the house to free up some capital. I'm keen to take my dog too - anyone have any idea of the costs involved? I'm thinking Melbourne... Would appreciate all advice Clare & Melissa :v_SPIN:

Finally managed to get a rental house in ACT!!!

Well after viewing 35+ houses and applying for at least 20/25 of those we have got a place to live from Friday. We have found a fab 3 bed in Florey and the area looks fab. Been 18 years since we have rented so should be interesting!!!! Apparently the worst time to try and rent in ACT is Jan & Feb! All applications required two separate forms - one from me and one from Rob - even though we are married etc and most of the forms were identical responses. One even asked us for our parents details and asked how long we have known them!! All this was whilst dragging three kiddies around and living in a tent in apparently the worst rain Canberra has had in 10 years!! But we got there!! You dont pay to put in applications and the best advice is to put in as many as possible - in the end I was doing my applications by email/fax - at least that way you dont have to run around too much more!! Make sure you have ID/references/evidence of funds etc scanned onto your laptop!! A covering letter did seem to be handy too! Today the children started school and they have all come home with big smiles - and only four nights left in the tent!! Things are looking up!!
  6. Finally handed in my application for a de facto visa in Sydney. The case officer saw me straight away even though I didn't have an appointment. Now all I need is the police clearance from Australia and hopefully a positive reply early next year..... Thanks everyone for answering my neverending stream of questions!!!

Finally we have pushed the button!

After nearly two years of this migration lark we have finally applied for our 176 visa. we had to wait till today as my wife qualified as a nurse one year ago yesterday. We also put our house up for sale, expecting a long wait and sods law, the first couple that came along paid cash and wanted us out in 4 weeks! So we are now living in rented till we go which hopefully should be the end of the year. Now the wait! JOHN
  8. Hi all, Finally the snow and ice let our Solicitor get in and exchange - been waiting since 18th December!! We will have shippers in 26th - 28th Jan and complete 29th Jan and move to in-laws for a few weeks (they are in NZ/Oz), then fly 20th Feb to Melbourne (3 nights Singapore) and arrive 25th Feb to Mornington.. 10. Well cannot believe it after 52 viewings finally sold the house again just hoping all goes to plan this time we have taken a massive hit but just couldn't bear another year here so all you waiting to sell looks like it could be a good week as many of us who have been waiting seem to be selling. Just cracked open a bottle of wine although not elated as we should be we are relieved and looking forward to completion in February fingers crossed:yes:

    We're Finally Here...Whoohoo

Hi guys,Just keeping you all posted on our latest anticts. well we've been here for a few days now and so far we love it. All of the waiting has well been worth it. As some of you's probs know we had a stopover in Korea and even managed to squeeze in a bit of skiing, bad idea if you have two left feet like me, but what a laugh anyways, wet backsides bumped heads, you know the usual. We took in a few shops on the way too but as I mentioned before our luggage was packed to breaking point so didnt manage to get much, although I did get a lovely lamp..hee hee. The only down point was the air quality in Korea is bad and we all had smokers coughs for a few days. Well when we finally arrived in Melbourne and the weather was lovely, after checking in to our hotel for the night we took in some of the sights. Melbourne is a beautiful city, very clean and family friendly.... (Iv posted some piccies on my profile page for anyone whos interested)... We moved into our rental house on the 12th and Im pleased to say its rather nice, its a 4 bed new build in berwick loads more space than we had back in the UK. We have just been finding our feet of late, we felt a little bit isolated at first, what with no car, phone or internet oh yeh and no furniture, but the latter of the 3 have been sorted and we,ve had a good rake around now, furniture arrives mid Jan. I cant believe how helpful and friendly the ozzies are. Can you believe it we've been invited for christmas dinner twice already, once in a cafe and the other coming out of Coles supermarket, omg how nice was that, now that would never happen in ASDA ..LMAO. I have their emails and phone numbers to keep in touch with them. The people here cant seem to do enough to help you, its a bit sureal but really nice. Plus Iv discovered fountain gate shopping centre, as we,ve just bought a little run around, I could wonder around there for days and still not get bored. Iv almost finished the christmas shopping and have even put up an ickle christmas tree. Take out food here is quite cheap but the supermarkets are roughly about the same, as is the clothes but there is a little store called best for less which is really reasonable in Fountain gate. As you've probablies gathered Im now connected to the internet but before that I was using the free internet at Berwick library (discovered thanks to ses..cheers hun) that was a god send. Iv just got to get the kids enrolled in schools and sort out the doctors, but all in all we have settled in great, and Im not missing the UK one bit...we had foxtell installed so I can still get the soaps and some uk TV its a little behind but what the heck its there..lol. Ok Iv rambled enough, and im getting tired so nitey nite. And all of you's still waiting, or getting a bit gittery...dont worry and hang on in there, the waters great. Merry Xmas everyone..Ang xx :tonguexmas:

  13. Finally got visa's but cruelly had been hoping to go to Queensland have family there and friends of family so had done all our research for there but due to my job as fitter coming off the csl found we had no choice but to swap our 175 for a 176 state sponsored visa. However we were determined to get to Australia so when we finally made up our minds to sack our crappy agent and go it alone, which we did and have now found ourselves looking at Perth which looks great but can anyone help us to find the right suburb? We have 3 boys aged 8,10 & 14 as i said i'm a fitter and my wife is a teaching assistant.Any help greatly received. Many thanx Rob & Penny Smith
  14. After much debate and research and rekki's we we have finally rented our house, as it just would not sell in this current market. We have booked our tickets and fly to perth 30th nov, arghhh. Excited, but so scared of leaving everyone behind. But hopefully we will all be fine. Anyone else heading for Perth soon?? I am dreading saying goodbye.. How does everyone cope with the awful bits of emigrating. Jan

    Finally here and loving it

We arrived in Australia nearly 3 months ago and thought I would just post to say that we are loving it and it really is worth waiting for. It took over 2 years to get the visa and there were many times when we felt like giving up but we are so glad we didn't. We haven't been on here much since we came out but we would like to say a big thanks to everyone who give us support and info when we were feeling down Thanks especially to Cal who suggested my sister look at Springfield Lakes when she recently moved from Sydney. She got a place here and we are staying with her. We move into our own house just around the corner in 2 weeks and we can't wait. The weather is fantastic and even though our little boy is at school and we are in an everyday routine, at the moment it stills feels a little unrealy and like a holiday. At the moment the only thing we miss about England is family and have no intention of going back. The first visitors are booked for January adn we can't wait. We are really living the dream - bbq and making the most of family time at the weekends, going to the beach, fishing and just generally enjoying the weather. I'm sure, like everyone there will be bad days but all we can say is if you want it, go for it, you'll only regret it if you don't try. Sarah x:biglaugh:

  22. I thought id share our experiences to date after leaving the UK back in February. I will have to put it in parts so what this space for updates!! Our adventure started early February as my parents and brother took the OH, myself and our 4 kids (15, 8, 6 & 20 months) to the Premier Inn, Heathrow Airport. It was very traumatic saying goodbye to them the night before we were due to fly out. The hotel was really nice - we booked two rooms (me and the girls had one, the OH and the boys the other) at it was about £70 incl. breakfast if I recall correctly. Our flight with Singapore Airlines was the next day, at 11am. We booked a wake up call for 5am and skipped breakfast and got the shuttle bus direct from the Hotel to the Airport which took about 10 mins. It was a bit of a comedy sketch with us carrying 8 suitcases and 6 pieces of hand luggage and a buggy to and from the shuttle bus but one passenger commented on our "military precision". lol. After arriving at Heathrow and grabbing 3 trollies we finally made it to the Singapore Airlines desk and checked in relatively quickly. We were a little concerned about excess baggage but the check in lady didnt bat an eyelid as the scales groaned under the weight of our luggage. Pleased with saving a fair few quid we quickly proceeded through to passport control and after emptying our bags of liquids into transparent bags (i should have been more organised) we passed through the the departure area. The place was absolutely heaving and we decided to grab a snack and a coffee. No sooner had we plonked our bums and bags down to relax for a second, the screens said our plane was boarding. After scalding my tongue with cafe latte, running in an outlet to get some plug adaptors, we gathered our bags and the kids and proceeding to the gate. The plane was already boarding so I practically threw the babies buggy at the attendant and tucked the little one under by arm along with two sports bags attractively strapped across my shoulders. What first struck me was how friendly the flight attendants were. Upon locating our seats (the kind check in lady had given me and little one the bulk head seats - loads more leg room, the oh and kids behind) our flight attendant made herself known and said if there was anything I needed for the little one to let her know. I had paid for a seat for the little one because I didnt like the thought of having her on my lap for 24 hours but she had to sit on my lap for take off. So there we were - leaving good ole blighty behind in 4 inch's of snow. Practically as soon as we took off, the attendant promptly fitted a bassinette to the bulk head wall (something I hadnt ordered as she had a seat and had thought she would be too big for) but was handy for dumping pillows, blankets etc they had given us, plus the little ones changing bag. The aircraft was one of the new big ones and the kids and the OH enjoyed having their personal screens which kept them occupied. The couple next to me had a 4 month old baby and it was quite comical when we came to put the little ones down for a nap (my little one swamped her basinette but she slept like a log). The attendants are continually feeding and watering us and I had no complaints about the food at all. We had a stop over at Singapore but didnt actually get to see much of it as we had a connecting flight within about 2 1/2 hours. Again the second flight was good, a slightly smaller plane, unfortunately no extra leg room or bassinette this time, but we all pretty much slept most of the light anyway. The food was good too although we didnt really eat that much purely cos we were so knackered. We finally landed in Brisbane International at about 7.30pm local time and I cannot fault the service we were given at the other end but the Airport staff. It was almost as if they felt sorry for us with 4 tired kids as we proceeded to passport control armed with our declaration slips. Again I was doning two sports bags and bubba under my arm, OH another couple of bags as well as a lap top bag and the kids their own ruck sacks. We joint an enormous queue but were approached by an official who ushered us to the empty Cabin Crew passport control desk where we were dealt with straight away. He then directed us to baggage reclaim and after collected our million and one suitcases another official checked our declaration forms and walked us straight past baggage checks and out into the arrivals hall. It was absolutely amazing. 5 stars to Brisbane Airport Staff - you made the end of our long journey effortless!!! We had booked a Kia Carnival from a local car hire company (just over AUD $1,000 for three weeks) and called their freephone number and were greeted by them within minutes. They then shuttled us to their depot about 5 minutes away and we collected our car. The OH's employer was there to meet us which was lovely, and although we obviously didnt look our best after a 24 hour flight, helped us load the bags and kids into the car. We followed him to our prebooked temporary accommodation approx. 40 minutes away from the airport and handed us 4 shopping bags full of groceries which his wife had kindly got for us. After a cup of tea and a chat with him he left us to take in the fact that we were now officially in Australia and were starting to live our dream. The story continues...... part 2 to come!!! Tinks xxx
  23. At last we have actually began the process of applying for our visa! 3 yrs ago the seed was planted in our head we wanted to move and after a year at college a few thousand pounds wasted and several times of thinking we would never be able to apply (and only because becoz of Gill did we find a way to ensure we could apply!) we have finally just met with our migration agent at overseas emigration in Edinburgh and begun the application, we are so excited!! He doesnt forsee any problems with our application and is hopoeful of a years time frame. I have just phoned my mum to tell how we got on and she put on the most unconvincing happy attitude ive heard, i can tell she will of put the phone down and probably started crying and theres a good chance she probably wont speak to us for a week now. My parents have resigned them selves to the fact we are going but refuse to ever visit as they say it is too far to fly. I am totally mixed right now with emotions of total excitment but also total guilt and sadness that i am actually leaving my parents as im an only child and taking their only 2 grand children away i dont think this feeling will ever leave me i feel so selfish right now:frown:x
