    A students dilemna.

Hey PIO. This is my first post so please be gentle! I had found your website this morning and have been on for a good couple hours checking the place out, but I think I need some direct advise to help me in my decisions. To put it into a formal order; I am currently a student, 18 years old and living in Oxfordshire, England. I have lived here for most of my life and hold a full citizenship here. Ive just finished my exams in the final year of sixth form (prioir to University) in Mathematics, Physics, and Design. I'm looking into going into mechanical engineering when I am older and so I applied for university here in England to do Mechanical Engineering in which I now have several conditional offers which will be decided on the results of my exams, which I recieve in 12 days on the 18th of August. One university is asking of me to recieve BBB of the three subjects and the second university, moreso my safety net, is asking that of CCC. I have a friend based down in Melbourne, who half a year ago, asked me to come down to visit. Feeling like I will need a break after fighting exams, I decided to bite the bullet and go for it. I took a six week holiday in Australia, mainly that of Melbourne but also in Goldcoast and Port Douglas, from June the 29th till August the 5th. I've been home for a day or two now, and I think it's kind of sad to say that I dont feel like I should be here. For over a year before I had even thought of trying out Australia I started feeling like England was not the place for me, I am not a fan of cold weather and I personally feel that the economy we live in will do nothing but get worse and i feel other countries like Australia hold a much more exciting and interesting diversity. And since i have been in Australia them feelings have been growing. I genuinely feel out of place being back in English soil. So now I am unsure what to do, and here is the question I have been asking myself and will be asking myself for a while; What do I do? I am very lucky in the sense that right now there is not alot tieing me down in the world. I have just finished all education leading up to university; and although I have applied for university I can always bail out. I definately want to extend my education, either in University or an apprenticeship. One thing worth pointing out is that next year tuition fees in england will be triple of what they are now. So if i want to go to university in England it must be starting in 2 months, or I am looking at 36,000 instead of 12,000 pounds tuition fees. This means if I dont get the grades in 12 days I need to cancel the England&Uni idea. I could always try to go for university in Australia instead though. Apprenticeships will be apprenticeships wherever you are, I think i would prefer to have one over in Australia, but, with the whole VISA thing I am not sure how easy it would be to get me into Australia. One thing I am very unsure about is the VISAs. Would it be easy for me to get a VISA to do engineering at university over there? - (I presume so as engineering is on their list of wanted professions right?) And equally so is it easy to get a VISA in order to get an apprenticeship in Australia? It would still be along the route of mechanical engineering. I do love my family but I feel that I can handle the distance from them, and as far as friends go, most of them are also going to university so either way I will not be seeing them alot. This is my main concern though; I have a girlfriend and have been with her for over four years now. She means a great deal to me and I know she will not want to go to Australia as she is going to university here. - Though you could argue that this doesnt make our future look so clear either. Another factor to consider also is my friend in Melbourne is fairly rich and his mother had said to me I can always live with them if I decided to embark on Uni or an apprenticeship in Melbourne. - Which is something I deffinately would consider. Through the six weeks in melbourne I also feel like I have made a few roots, I already know I like the city and can see myself living there, and had made a few friends in the process too. And also I do not see myself living here when I am older, I havent been able to picture that for a long time. I can picture myself living in Australia; more specifically Victoria though. And this is my dilemna right now. I am very confused in what I should do. I would really appreciate feedback from you all, including any suggestions or questions. Furthermore who do I seek if i want professional advise? Very kind regards, foxx.
  3. I have been in touch with my school to get a letter but as I left over 10 yrs ago they no longer hold any records that I attended the school and I was taught in English. I have all my GCSE and A level certificates but I've heard this is not proof enough. I am going to try and contact the examining board to ask if they can do anything but if not can I write a statutory declaration and get it signed by the justice of peace and send this along with all my cetificates?

:smile:Hi Hope you are comfortable! Here goes... We hope to immigrate on a RSMS in nov '12. Our girls will have turned 6 and 4 at the end of summer '12. I'm a Nurse. In Wales Lizzie started fulltime Nursery class at the age of 3. She is currently finishing Reception class and starts Year 1 this Sept. By Nov. '12 she will just have started Year 2. Ellie starts fulltime Nursery in March '11 (she is and will be part time until then) and Reception in Sept. '11. She will have just started Year 1 in nov. '12. These are my questions: What does oz have that is equivalent to reception class? Is that what Kindy is? What classes will they go into in Jan '12 when they'll be 6 and 4? Do we have to pay for kindy? Can we choose any school or are there catchement areas? Am I worrying over nothing? Lizzie will be 5 next month and completes 2 school years. She is currently in the top group in her reception class for literacy and maths. Don't expect to get the home and job perfect from the start but so so want to get the school right so that they can settle quickly. Thank you in advance Ann
  5. We are hoping to move to Perth before the end of this year and have three kids 11,7 and 2. Looking to live around south perth applecross or west perth wembly downs, cottesloe areas. Family and friends in austrailia have advised us to go for private catholic schools but we are not keen on massive fees. Are there good state schools which cater well for overseas students (we are coming fro Ireland) and provide european languages etc.?? I am particularly worried about my eldest son who will need to transfer to secondary school within the first two years and there is always a chance that we will not stay beyond our 4 year visa and he might struggle back in Ireland with the different cirriculum. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :confused:
  6. Hi, please could someone help me?!! I am a secondary UK PE teacher in my 6th year of teaching (female). Any advice, as we are looking at moving to Oz in the next 18 months. Also, I am looking to either move to Perth or Melbourne, what are the wages for teacher in either states please?? thank you

    Experience during education

Hi everybody. I have lodged my application to DIAC. But I have got a little problem. I claim 10 points for specific work exp, but some of this period is during my education, I combined work and studies. Will DIAC count only exp after I received a degree or DIAC will count all expereince. If DIAC counts only after my graduation there won't be 3 years exp and I won't receive 10 points. I know that DIAC can cut exp before my graduation. Is there any certain answer? Please help. P.s. my occupation is 261111 Business analyst.

    Post 16 Education

Hi everyone! Can anyone help me? I had a job offer from a Townsville hospital, but have decided to let my son finish his GCSE's here first ( he's doing everything in welsh!) . What will the options be for education when we get out there, he would be almost 17. He's had good marks in his year 9 exams and would probably continue to A level if we were still in the UK. What age can they start college courses in Oz , and would we have to pay? Thanks, Sarah.:mask:

  15. Hi All, I've a couple of questions to ask that I hope to have logical answers to from members. I submitted my Form80 in Mar 2010 and my wife's in Apr 2010. There were gaps in educational history but my CO never asked about it and accepted. Now I've seen one applicant who submitted Form80 in Mar 2010 and has now been asked by CO to resubmit Form80 after filling in the gaps in education and employment history. My questions are: Is it a requirement from CO or ASIO to fill in the gaps in Form80? Once the form80 has been accepted by CO and is handed over to ASIO for security clearance, can it come back after so long time (almost 13 months)? Is this returning back indicative of something? Does it mean ASIO is picking up his file only now for security clearance? How much time does ASIO take after start proceeding with security clearance? I appreciate all thoughts Regards
  16. Hi, I would like to seek some advice and opinions from the forumers here. I am currently residing in Singapore, mid 30s, and is contemplating taking up MBA to enhance my career prospects. Due to family and work commitments, I am leaning towards taking an online MBA or Distance learning MBA. At the same time, I am also exploring the possibility to work in Australia in 2 years times. The situation is, I am torn between doing a 1) DL MBA from UK (better reputation and accreditations, comparatively cheaper) 2) online MBA from Australia (> expensive and less reputable) However, option could (I am not too sure about this, hence could), potentially open me up to job opportunities in Australia, due to: a) it's a Australia MBA and I intend to move to Australia and b) I could potentially find more contacts and job opportunities when I am in Australia for my capstone module. I am not sure how much truth does my assumptions hold, hence would like to seek some opinion and advice. Thanks in advance.

    Education costs

Hello, My partner has been offered a job in Canberra. We plan to be out with you all in October. We have a 5 year old and wondered about education costs. I have read they are around $4,500 per year. However, he is a civil engineer and I was wondering whether we may get free education as this is one of the proefessions on the wanted list - ??? Maybe just wishful thinking!
  18. Hi all Hoping there are some experienced migrants/teachers parents who can help. OH could have a job lined up in WA on a 457, excellent job and development opportunity, fantastic looking place, good relocation package, fab salary. All looks good. We are still in the dilemma of wether to go and have decided the best approach for us ( know it's personal) is to look at this as. A 3 yr project, re-evaluating every year or so. This means I need to plan and consider an escape route. Has anyone got experience of moving back to the UK with school age kids? My oldest struggles a little (very bright a couple of years ahead in reading/numeracy), bit behind in writing (can't be arsed to do it to be honest) and his concentration is far from great. He is in year 4 and turns 9 in June. Youngest is (besides a pain with attitude) very bright, on gifted and talented register, working on yr 5 reading comprehension, 2 yrs aheadin writing and yr ahead in numeracy. What I'm worried about is, if we go and come back, when is the best time to return to minimise disruption for the kids? I was of the mind that coming back before the oldest starts GCSE work would be best, that way transition to A levels may be better and then uni entry? This would mean returning when he is in yr 9. I think the younger one will be fine as she would be back in plenty time. I've looked at schools and found a really good one so feel happy that they will be getting a good education there. I am concerned whether they will miss out on anything and if we should move between the two. I've looked for comparisons between school curriculums but can't find very much. Does anyone know how they compare and what steps we can take to try bridge any gaps? Wondering whether extra tuition may help ( number 1 has a tutor now as one on one helps his concentration). Sorry about the garble!!!!!! Thanks in anticipation.
  19. .....:chatterbox:..............there has been a lot of debate recently about status.....................monarchy and the commen people....................unemployed and the high paid tax avoiders...... the unfairness of wealth contribution..............what contributes to status attainment ?.............education...........family income and its benefits.................or is it your own effort and ability..................or maybe just luck ?..............................many have said it is just education................ie educational achievements equal occupational prestige.....................so there for the son of a labourer[with no further education .school only] should in theory be able to achieve the same occupational level as a son from a parent with any form of further education [university .colledge etc]..............given the same education ....................is this true.?:err::unsure: with schools now havving to make their achievment statistics available to the public ..................schools can be choosen on achievment...................

    the best education

Hi there, I wondered if anyone could steer me in the right direction. As a family we would like to be living on the Gold Coast, but I want to make sure I choose the right secondary school for my son which would need to be science based. Im also scared about not choosing the right area of the Gold Coast. Help
  22. My 15 yr old son ( who is 16 in August, yr 11 ) will have just done his last exam before arriving in Tas. He is in no way academic so, if he comes away from the Uk with very few passes, which is seeming to be highly likely, where will he stand re the Tasmanian education system? Will he go back into the education system re the secondary school, or would it be to a college? He seems quite happy to go back to school so it wouldn't be a problem to him, but would prefer college. I'm under the impression that he will have to go back into education, unless he can get an apprenteship, is this correct? I've reckoned to do some research on this, but can't quite seem to get a definative answer. Chris

  24. Hi, Scenario 1... Looking for some serious advice pls. Situation is ....we're heading to Victoria, geelong area, summer 2011. 16yr old daughter will have finished GCSE's and if staying in Uk, would have gone to college for 2yrs to do A levels, as wants to go to Uni to train as teacher. As we won't be arriving until Approx August 2011, which will be coming towards end of Oz academic year, she would then only have one year left to join her peers. What would that mean for her gaining the certificate that 18 yr old Oz pupils gain when they stay to finish education until age 18+? Would she be able to do the work in the year? If not, what are her choices for gaining required level of education necessary to enter Oz Uni? Is there something/ equivalent to UK A levels, that she could do at college? She is a very bright girl and will do well in her GCSE's, so won't struggle academically. Scenario 2...Other daughter, will be coming up 20 when we arrive. She was born in Oz, so has passport and citizenship, though lives in UK. She has 2 years college education, with Diploma certificate in Health care. She wishes to go to Uni to train to become a nurse. How far head of academic year start does she need to apply? Also, how do Oz students fund Uni? Is there a grant or loan she would be eligible for? I read somewhere that as a citizen there may be some eligibility for help with fees? Any help on eith scenario, gratefully received. Thanks
  25. Hi everybody, We have just received our visas and we plan to move out to Australia in January 2012 ready for the new school year. We have narrowed down where we would like to live to Brisbane or Adelaide. This is because we have a young family and we both work in IT, so are looking for a good home/work balance and preferably be near to a beach! My big question is about schooling. My daughter will be 7.5 when we arrive. In the UK she will be Yr2 (England) or Primary 3 (Scotland). In the UK she has a teaching assistant for part of her day as she has development delay (she has Williams Syndrome). What options are there in Brisbane and Adelaide? How do I go about finding where the best mainstream primary schools with teaching aide support are? And should I have my daughter assessed before starting school? Can anyone recommend an educational assessor? What are they called in Australia, and what is the special needs assessment called? Thanks for your help, Rosie
