    cost of living in Melbourne?

Hello everyone, I have been offered a job opportunity with a salary of $85k and was wondering if this would be a good wage to support myself, partner and 1 year old child, I will be the only full time earner. is this enough to live off in Melbourne? also, where would be a good area to live, my place of work would be in Kew but would like to live close to the beach and walking distance to most amenities etc. thanks in advance!!! Cost of living

Hi I've been reading lots of posts and done some research on the cost of living in Brisbane. I am thinking that my OH's job possibility (457 visa) looks tight cost-wise. He has been told there would be a negotiable offer of $70-80K plus car/fuel and relocation costs. At the moment we both work full-time (UK) and have a modest mortgage. We have a 7 year old son. The company is one OH has worked for in the UK. Any thoughts? Thanks!
  3. Just seen this on the news today and i can well believe it! You might get paid more wages but its all relative with the cost of living. I was quite well off in the UK but I feel like I have had to start again financially, not being able to afford things like i used to and having to buy things on interest free credit, even then you are charged extra things on your statement which add up which you didnt get in the UK!! THE rise in the Australian dollar means we now have four of the 15 most expensive cities in the world to live in, according to a survey released today by the UK-based Economist Intelligence Unit. Sydney has moved up from 32nd place two years ago to sixth now and Melbourne is up from 38th to seventh, with a cost of living more than 40 per cent higher than New York, The Australian reports. Perth and Brisbane, which are almost 25 per cent more expensive than New York, are ranked 13th and 14th. All four cities are now costlier than major cities including London, Vienna, Rome, Berlin, Hong Kong and Beijing, according to the survey, which compares the cost of living using more than 400 individual prices in 133 cities around the world. Tokyo, Oslo and Osaka take the top three places overall while Mumbai, Tunis and Karachi are the three cheapest. The Australian cities' rankings have climbed sharply in the unit's surveys in recent years. 4. Hi there, Does anyone have an uptodate budget planner that they can share? We are considering a move to Sydney but are trying to work out what all the costs are that we need to factor in each year, and on a monthly basis once we are over there? We'd be coming on a 457 and would benefit from LAFHA. We are planning on $800-$1000 a month for accommodation but don't know where to start with council tax equiv, utilities, car tax, MOTs etc etc. Thanks, Nats
  5. Hi We've just bought our teenager a new bike to ship with us, as his old one is way too small. It cost us £139, we've filled in the form for the shippers that state what are under 12 months old items. Just wanted to know what we might get charged for this bicycle, anyone been charged for items that are under 12 months old?? Thanks

    Tea chests and the cost?

Hi, We have pretty much decided that most of our furniture is not good enough to bother with a container, we have basically had our life on hold for the past 3-4 years waiting for the visa so have only bought furniture from places like Ikea. We do have the kids toy's and games consoles to take and I have a some tools that I'll definitely be bringing. So in short we need smaller transportation options so we can start weigh it up and be brutal with our planned shipping if necessary. Has anybody else come to the same conclusion and if so how did you go about it? Cheers
  9. Hello, Has anyone got any experience of storing there belongings before shipping. I am trying to work out whether it would be cheaper to store our stuff for 2 months before we leave and therefore save on the rent and move in with the in laws

    Cost of Living in Brisbane

Hi guys, I've done a bit of research and I've come up with the following general cost of living for Brisbane: Costs are per month based on a family of 4 renting a 3/4 bed house. Rent = $1,800 Water Rates n/a Water Usage n/a Contents Insurance = $35 Electricity = $150 Gas = $25 Phone = $60 Broadband = $50 Digital TV = $80 Hospital Cover = $115 Medical Ancillaries = $77 GP Expenses = $50 Schooling n/a state school (maybe) Other costs for Children = $75 Car Insurance = $85 Annual License = $66 Service = $220 (per year) Repairs = $350 (per year) Fuel = $180 Food for family of 4 = $1,000 Entertainment = $500 Public Transport = $192 Does anybody have any opinions (good or bad) on this. Thanks guys
  12. Hi All I am looking for some clarification on rental's and the associated costs in Queensland. Right off the cuff the tenant (Me) is responsible for the weekly rental, however I am getting mixed ideas regarding who is responsible for rates and taxes and water for the property. Could someone please clarify these for me and possibly anything I have left off Thanks
  13. Hello, We left Oz a year ago, having spent 8 very enjoyable months in Sydney whilst I was on maternity leave. At the time we left because I couldn't find a job so we were better off coming back to the UK where I could go back to my pre-maternity job, but we always said we'd be back... now there seem to be more opportunities coming up I'm debating about whether to apply for a job, especially as there's a high chance of huge job losses in the next 6 months, but nobody seems to know yet, so just looking at Option B. When we left we had found Oz expensive but then the UK had been very cheap for a while, now that alot of things have gone up in price here & seem comparable, eg to the food prices when we left Sydney, I'm wondering wheter prices have stayed the same or also gone up as much as they have over here. I don't really want to be moving across the world to have to watch a every single penny every minute of the day. I'd be interested in peoples' opinions. Thanks
  14. How much realistically does it cost to move? Two adults & a two year old... my not always positive thinking husband has said that it could cost us £20,000 to move to Oz counting everything from flights to shipping a container/ car. This seems a little extreme, & I'd be interested to know how much it has cost people. Not taking into account visa as I & my little girl have citizenship and my husband has a de facto visa. Thanks guys, it all helps with mulling over the move idea.

    175 visa cost with spouse

Hiya, my fiance and i are planning our move over to Oz, after back from a year on WHV, we decided we like it enough to move permanently. I have a quick question regarding the cost of the 175 visa. Might be a dumb one but still want to double check lol! He is a QS and i unfortunately don't hold any qualifaction listed on sol list, (though will have a Honours Degree by the time we aim to move) The plan is for him to be the main applicant and me as spouse. is the cost per visa or per applicant. ...ie from immi.gov.au it says: The 1st instalment of the Visa Application Charge must be paid at the time of application. The 2nd instalment of the Visa Application Charge for dependents aged 18 years or over with less than functional English must be paid before the visa is granted. Skilled - Independent (Migrant) visa (subclass 175) Charge Type Charge Amount 1st instalment $2575 2nd instalment $3575 so does that make the visa cost $6150 or is it $6150 per person named? thanks
  16. Someone told me last night that when you book a flight on-line, the more times you look (without booking), the dearer the cost becomes. This is because 'cookies' are stored on your PC. Anyone experienced this or is it a myth? I'll clean my 'cookies' before I book just in case! If you google 'booking flights cookies price rise' there's plenty of information... Cheers, Mike.

  25. Hi all We are in the process of getting our quotes for furniture removals from Kent to Mackay, and was quite honestly gobsmacked by the first quote that came our way. We have about 650/680 cubic feet to ship over and we have been quoted £4000 for a shared container and £4800 for 20ft sole use. When looking at other posts on here, I realise that we are getting charged about £1000 more for the 'distance between Brisbane and Mackay'. I appreicate that it is a 11 hour drive between cities, but surely that doesnt justify the extra £1000 charge. :arghh: Am I wrong? (I'm female - so never wrong!!!!!) .... lol:wubclub:
