  1. I was talking to a guy who might be able to get me a job on site, but he says i need a white card before i can work in the construction industry. I've had a quick look online and found at least 10 different places all offering white cards from prices ranging from $28 to $90. I don't want to get ripped off with a fake one, or pay over the odds, is there an official organisation/website/government department i should be doing it with? I'm staying in Perth if that makes any difference.

    White card

Just a note to all that you can now do the white card in the UK. I am a joiner and site manager on commercial sites in the UK and after researching the Australian H&S card that is required, was relieved to find that a company called trainingstars has just started doing the course in the UK. I am writing this because I found the course very informative in teaching me the Oz terminology for many things that I know about but wouldn't have recognised because of the change in names. I also found the instructor very helpful and its a great relief to know its one less thing to have to sort when I get there. I defiantly recommend this course to anyone who may require a white card when you get to Australia.

    FIFO plumbing work

Hello all, After trawling through hundreds of web pages and spending many hours searching for information on FIFO plumbing work on the mines in WA, I was hoping that someone in this community could share their knowledge on FIFO work for tradies. It seems to be 'who you know' rather than 'what you know' gets you in. Are there any special courses plumbers need to attend in order to get work? I look forward to any feedback anyone may have Thanks in advance guys Paul
  9. Hi Can anyone let me know what the average salary would be for a construction manager/site manager? I am an experienced project manager but because I do not have a degree I need to apply as a Building Associate! There I am expecting that I will need to drop down to site manager level but need to know how much that will pay to determine if it will be worth going. Also are there plenty of opportunities in WA for site managers?
  10. I'm a building services engineer. Working in such a male dominated industry can be hard at times and I'm worried if it'll be worse in Aus. "Macho culture" and all that! Does anyone have any experience?
  11. hi I am considering moving out to australia and was looking for information on securing work in construction project management as a trainee or assistant and wether past qualifications (higher national diploma in construction management, modern apprenticeship in bricklaying with advanced craft certificate) are recognised in australia and be beneficial in securing a position in this field. I would also be greatfull for a list of main contractors in perth that i could contact and wether the talk in the uk of numerous opportunities in construction in oz is accurate, thanks
  12. Can anyone tell me how much it would cost to install an average size pool and the upkeed costs, is it worth it?
  13. Hi all, I'm currently considering a FIFO in WA. Having never worked FIFO before I'd really appreciate it if some of you could share your experiences. The rota is 3 on 1 off. I'm a married guy, late 20s no kids. How do the wives cope? Do any of them live near to the mines? Thanks in advance.

  18. other than the mines--ive been told Queensland is a bit quite--whats happening in oz as far as construction goes--and in general employment areas--nursing still seems the number 1 area in oz for immigration--so in what fields are they looking to employ, and if anyone in the uk can change there profession to suit these needs before arriving in oz
  19. Hi, A friend & I will be looking for roofing/plastering work when we arrive in Perth next week. Ive been told its a good option to look around Karratha/Port Hedland area. Is there a bit of a construction boom going on in these mining areas as I've been led to believe? Are there any other areas worth looking at? Dont mind travelling but if there is anything closer to Perth it would be better. Thanks Guys n Girls.......Pete.....
  20. Hi All, What would be the best tactics for a couple of blokes looking for roofing & plastering work in WA. To be honest we dont have work visas but are hoping to find sponsors when we arrive in a couple of weeks time. Do you think its realistic/possible to do it this way? Were both too old to get WHVs so need to find sponsors. It sounds like there is plenty of work just at the moment & we dont mind moving around in order to find work. I believe there is plenty of work in the Karatha/Port Hedland area. Anyone have experience of working up around there? Many thanks....Smigs....

    Construction Management Visa

Hi Has anyone managed to get their visa when applying for the skilled workers list as a project manager without a degree but with experience and asuitable HNC? this will determine if I decide to go ahead and apply for my visa. Any information would be apprieciated.
  23. Hi all and i hope someone could just give some advice on this subject? I am a Bricklayer and should hopefully receive my 176 visa over the coming weeks! Looking at some of the posts on this site there seems to be a trend that there is no real bricklaying oppotunities at the moment. My question is would i be able to seek other work within the building industry such as carpentry, plastering, general plumbing etc etc without having these skills certified through vetassess? I do not want work to hold me back from living in Oz and will explore all possibilities!! Any advice would be more than welcome.:goofy:
  24. Hi, I've got a VERY good chance of a position based on Perth (fly-in fly-out) with McMahon. Going to relocate from Manchester. Anyone here work with, for, or know anyone who's been with McMahon? Just need to know what they're like to work with. Thanks in advance!
  25. Just found our dream house for sale, perfect in every way, only one thing bothers me, coming from the UK we are used to solid brick homes and I am told by the agent that this house is a rendered blueboard construction. What is that? is it good or bad? We are told that thare is good insulation in the roof. I would be very grateful for any builders that have experience in aussie building to give me some advice
