Cheap things to do in Melbourne

Hi there I've been in Melbourne for around 8 weeks now & have spent so much time worrying about visas/money that I've forgotten to enjoy the City! Just wondered if people had a few must-do ideas to do here whilst on a budget. I'm 28 & single & don't mind pottering about on my own. Thanks Catherine
  2. We are looking at affordable people carrier hire from Brisbane airport for 5 1/2 weeks this summer but are having trouble as the only affordable options limit the area of use and we are hoping to travel as far as Port Douglas/Mossman and as far south as Byron Bay. There seems to be a 6 seater available which would be ideal and cheaper than a larger car. Would appreciate any advice.
  3. Hi, Can anyone advise me of somewhere to stay (family of 4) in Melbourne. Looking at east side. I need somewhere nice but cheap. Staying for 3 weeks, 1 week along ocean road and the remainder of the time checking out life in Melbourne. Thanks
  4. Does any one know of a cheap shipping company for shipping a few boxes of personal items ?????
  5. Seen a few posts from people who think that alot of things in Australia are expensive compared to the UK. This is a thread that will (hopefully) give people who are not yet here a good idea of what really does cost alot in Australia, and a chance for other members to pass on useful information as to where these items can be purchased cheaper (if it's possible to do that). I hope that it will also help people decide what to bring with them if they can ship it over instead of buying it here (again, if that's possible). Please could the poster also try to quote a current price for what they think is expensive, so others can see why they think that. :notworthy: I'll start: I live in Queensland and think that the following things are expensive here compared to the UK: Vitamin supplements - eg Centrum Tablets Multi Vitamins 60pk Price $19.76 at Woolworths Bedding - Target (not an expensive store) generally sells sheet sets for around $$70 -$100 but can be much more expensive The plastics storage containers you use in the kitchen - a cereal container form Woolworths costs around $15.00 Cheaper items are meat from a "super butcher" market style shop, and vegetables purchased from a fruit and veg shop - typically, 20 yearling steaks has cost me recently around $20 or less, and you can get avocados & small pineapples for 9c each, and for $5.00 you can get 2 big punnets of strawberries. Of course, it is cheaper to buy fruit and veg that's in season, the same as it would be anywhere. This isn't a UK vs Australia thread, just a way to show how much things do really cost and how to save money on the advice of other members. I'll come back if I think of any more  Sue x
  6. Immigration figures suggest Australia is becoming less attractive for Brits and that many are going home due to the cheaper pound. SOURCE

  13. Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone had any good websites to check for reasonable flights from the uk to perth at the beginning of March? My sister and her boyfriend would love to come and visit but the cheapest flights they can find so far are about £800, which i think seems pretty steep for that time of year? Anyone, if anyone has any suggestions i would be very grateful, as we would so love her to visit! Thanks for reading, Claire x

Help - cheap family break in WA?

Hi asking for help again!! we are on a really tight budget due to work problems and have just had to cancel a planned family holiday to Albany - luckily we got most of our deposit back! In-law are visiting for 2 months and we would really like to get away somewhere not too far with them, just for a break (god knows we need it after the year we have had!). there will be 4 adults, 3 children ages 13,7,3 - would prefer self catering accomodation, but dont really mind, would love a pool and something for the kids to "do". any ideas - anything considered, so lets have some suggestions please!!! thanks x
  16. Anyone know of any cheap flihgts back to the uk at the moment, or anyone in the business that could help. please let us know (need to get there soon! family member not good) thanks.

  18. Hi all, We are arriving in Sydney in December and after the Xmas break we will be aiming to track down a 2/3 bed rental property (apartment or similar). My base of work will be north of the airport but south of the CBD - office location not decided yet, but likely to be Alexandria or nearby. We would like to have a reasonably decent rental accommodation and are prepared to venture a little further out of the city (say about 30 min commute - ideally by public transport). However, I see if you head south you are getting dangerously close to the airport. My aim would not to have numerous aircraft passing overhead all day (although I guess this would potentially keep the rent down). However, it would be good to be close to the airport, as I will be required to fly to Brisbane quite oftern in my new role. Toughie, but anyone "local" to Sydney - any thoughts as to potential good areas to start looking for somewhere? Thanks all, Martin

  23. Hi My hysband Warren has travelled back to gold Coast alone to secure a job before we arrive. He is staying at Ashmore Palms but is very lonely. Ashmore is great and staff have been wonderful with him. But at night there is nothing to do and without driving nowhere to go. This is beginning to get him down as he has nobody to talk to. Can anyone recomend a studio apartment or something similar anywhere on Gold Coast were he can walk to a pub or coffee shop or just somewhere to people watch. Also somewhere cheap. Thanks Jill xxx
