Hi guys, this is an update from our previous post: Well so far we have exhausted all avenues for my husband to try and secure a carpenters job. There was one advertised to install timber stairs, phoned up, this was the conversation: Do you have a work visa? YES, do you have experience? YES 14 YEARS, do you have your own tools YES, Do live local YES. Do you have transport and current driving licence? YES do you have a blue card? YES. Is your vehicle a UTE, NO. the response No you need a UTE, but have you any experience working in a factory, making stairs? NO, so you have guessed it he had to take the job in the factory, turns up today to find that three other guys had also had the same conversation with this company. (the job for installing stairs did not exist!!!!), it was a decoy to get people working in the factory, but wait it gets worse!!!!, the wages are less than $21.00 after the first month!!!, but what do you do when you have a family and bills to pay. It then turns out that contractors were turning up to the yard in Cars with roofracks and trailers, so much for needing a UTE. The other two guys that started with me are also finding that the job situation on the gold coast is 100% contrary to popular belief. Looks like back to UK in a couple of months:arghh:

Hi we are a young family hoping to move to Brisbane, I am waiting for a practical skills test for carpenters. I work on commercial fit outs, so was very worried when i heard that part of the test was to pitch a roof as apart from college (a long time ago and very brief) i have no experience in roofing at all and wouldn't know where to start. is anyone aware of alternative tests being offered or is it a case of pitch a roof or you fail?.Very strange being that shopfitters etc ,like me would never work on roofs.

Hi Dave has been a window fitter and home improvement chappy for about 8 years now and we have been granted a visa on his carpentry skills. He doesn't want to do site work, he hates that environment. He much prefers the personal nature of working on people's homes and meeting different people - he also prefers the window etc side of things. Does anyone have any idea what job opps would be like in the Melbourne area for this kind of thing? I think he ought to do sales as he can charm the birds out of the trees - we still receive Christmas cards from his clients from years ago!! Cheers for any advice.
