I have a small carpentry company here in the uk and i will come to oz with all the required licences. my main contracts in the uk are building travel lodge hotels and premier inn hotels from start to finish, I cover all aspects of carpetry to a very high standard. The only issue i may have will be my tools as they are 110v (not sure if they will work in oz.)either way this is nothing a few dollars cant sort. i will be very greatfull of any help anyone can give me. thanks
  2. Hi, I was hoping someone would be able to advise me what the job situation looks like for carpenters in Melbourne? I am awaiting my visa which should be September 2011. I work as a carpenter and have 13 years experience - preferring to work as a first and second fixer - called lock up and fixing I think in Australia. I would like to know if you have to work as self employed in Melbourne and find work on a job to job basis or if there is call for working for a firm providing constant employment? Could anyone tell me what the average wage is for a carpenter in Melbourne and also the best area for work at the moment? It would be great to hear from any expats in this field too. Many thanks Gavin

work for a carpenter / joiner

hi there, is there any work for joiners in melbourne. would appreciate any advise.
  4. My hubby left school and went on a YTS (youth training scheme) for carpentry. He was offered a job about a month before finishing so unfortunatley never went back for results. The job he did was fitting kitchens and bedrooms which they made to measure. He did this for 5-6 yrs. He then went on to do a bit of shop fitting (didnt stay with this). For the last 15 yrs he has worked for the local council as a Rapid Response Carpenter. His job involves doing repairs in council houses and making them liveable for new tenants, this includes some plumbing (finding/fixing leaks, fitting new bathrooms/toilets). Although he has no written qualifications I thought his years of experiance would count for something, but have now been told that carpenters in Aus means working on new builds putting up frameworks and roofing. He has never worked on a building site so has no experiance at this. Someone else has advised me he could be classed as a joiner in Aus terms and I was wondering if any 'British carpenters' could advise me on their experiances or job titles and the best way forward !!! any info would be really appreciated.
  5. When we move to QLD (hopefully) and my OH starts work, he has a recognised australian skill (vetassess), will he need to have anything else?

  8. Hi All, Moving to Sydney end of February 2011. My wife is being sponsored on a 457 and I am the secondary visa holder which means i have full working rights. I am a qualified carpenter (NVQ Level 3) with 8 or so years experience. I want to consider both employed and contract work and understand for the latter I need a Contractor Licence. I have however just looked in to it in more detail and it states that no overseas qualifications are approved for licensing in NSW and that applicants from overseas who have already migrated to Australia should approach a Registered Training Organisation for an assessment of their skills and knowledge for the licence class relevant to their trade before they can get this licence. It does however state on the NSW Fair Trading website that "Any applicant issued with a qualification through VETASSESS is eligible to be granted a contractor licence or supervisor’s certificate for carpentry, bricklaying and/or joinery." But as I already have the 457 visa approved and will be in Australia can I still do this? I sat and passed the theory end of 2009 when we were planning on coming out on my trade. As VETASSESS keep sending me reminders to do the practical I assume I wont need to do the theory again? Any help would be much appreciated! God i keep finding more and more things we have to pay for!!!!!!!!!
  9. TRADES NO LONGER AVAILABLE VIA THE 'SMP WA SPONSORED' (176,886,475 and 487) I have noticed on the new WA SMP that Thay no longer sponsor~(correct as of 26/01/11) 323211-Fitter (general) is no longer available, (what the hell is general fitter???) 331212-Carpenter 341111-Electrician (General) 351411-Cook The Department of Training and Workforce Development - Skilled Migration Western Australia - Occupations in demand I am applying under 331213-Joiner, I am worried that things can change very quickly, has any one experienced this???
  10. Hi All, Moving to Sydney end of February 2011. My wife is being sponsored on a 457 which means i have full working rights on her visa. This is the course they link to - CPC30208 Certificate III in Carpentry. I have had a look at this course and it is a full blown carpentry course - which means really expensive and lengthy!! is this really necessary, especially when i have already done the UK equivalent recently? It does however state on the NSW Fair Trading website that "Any applicant issued with a qualification through VETASSESS is eligible to be granted a contractor licence or supervisor’s certificate for carpentry, bricklaying and/or joinery." But as I already have the 457 visa approved and will be in Australia at the point when i can do an assessment the VETASSESS website refers me to the Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) website! CONFUSED!! Any help would be much appreciated! God i keep finding more and more things we have to pay for!!!!!!!!!

  14. Hi, My partner is a carpenter builder with work in central Brisbane (usually no more than 5km from the CBD). Work is predominantly renovations on Queenslanders. He is looking for a carpenter to start working with him from mid Januray 2011. You will need to have your BSA license or very close to getting it, have your own vehicle, at least the majority of tools needed and public liability insurance. As the work is central Brisbane you will alo need to live a maximum of 10km from the CBD. You will need to be motivated as the ideal would be to find someone to grow with the company. Please contact me with your experience, where you live, license status etc (as above) and your hourly rate. Pay will depend on experience/tools etc. Thanks
  15. Oh I am soooooo confused as to what licences and insurances I need to work as a Carpenter! Looked at a number of vacancies and they all ask for different things! What I can establish on the government websites is that I need the following to work as a contractor and / or an employee.... Australia Business Number (ABN) Tax File Number (TFN) Contractor Licence But some vacancies ask for these as well? Are they the same thing or different? I have googled them and there seems to be so many training organisations that offer courses for you to get these cards but are they all official? Any recommended training organisations in Sydney would be much appreciated. How much should I look to pay for these cards? Green card / white card / OHS card Also is the following essential if you work as a contractor? Public Liability Insurance? Your help would be much appreciated!

  19. My partner is looking for a carpenter to work for him (he is a builder carpenter) on a variety of projects as the person he has had working for him for the last six months is moving back to NZ to get married in a couple of weeks. If you are a carpenter in Brisbane (we are based just west of the CBD and most work is around this area or northside) with at least the essential tools and your own public liability insurance and you are looking for work, please message me with your experience and your hourly rate. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who is starting out and wants to learn. Ideally looking for someone who is looking to work long term. However, if you are looking for short term projects, do still let us know. Thanks, Leanne
  20. Hi There, I wring on behalf of my hubby, hes a carpenter. We arrived on the sunshine coast about 4 weeks ago, and he started to look for work. Hes been told by numerous people that he needs to get Licences, which is fine, but the agencies wont even speak to him, until he gets his skills assessed again, and gets the Australian Qualification !! This is no problem, and hes more than happy to do it, but what we want to know, is whats the best way to get work in the mean time ?? Should he just do labouring? If anyone has any ideas, or found themselves in the same boat, any advice would be great !! Also, I think it was silver stargazer ( Hope thats right ) gave us a contact name a while ago, of simon burbage, but his e-mail doesnt seem to wotk anymore, if you read this silver stargazer, do you have any other contact for Simon, as when we contacted him before, he was kken for my hubby to e-mail once we arrived ?? Hoipe this isnt to long winded. Any advice would be great. Ang and Family !!
