Good morning, you all helped me already for quite a while just reading some threads. Thank's for that  I lodged my 176 qld sponsored visa (fitter) application on Aug. 2008. Some of you can imagine what that time period means...:twitcy: As we know it's easier to get a job with a visa and vice versa. I fly at the beginning of October to Cairns and search personally for a job/job offer. I expect to push my chances in getting the visa granted and prepare our life in Australia a bit in advance. Now I'd like to ask you to give me some advice or tell about your experiences getting a job offer before holding a permanent visa in hands. Who made it this way ? thank you in advance lodged aug 2008, ielts 6,5, qld sponsorship sept. 2009, tra fitter, waiting

Hi im new to pomsinoz. My name is Lewis and im 15, 16 in June. Im moving to Cairns soon with my family. My dad(42), mum(38) and two brothers 13 and 9. We got our visas accepted a few weeks a go and we put the house up for sale last week. We are hoping to be their by August/September/October. Ive been to Cairns before, I went with my family over Christmas in 2008 and loved it. when we returned me and my brothers was nagging my mum and dad to move. Every day we was like "have we started yet?" lol. Anyway a few week ago we got accepted. We hope to be moving around places like Smithfield/Trinity Beach ect. We got in on my dad who will be tiling with my uncle when we get their. We are all very excited about the move and we just have to sell the house. I just want to ask a few questions for those that live their or have been to Cairns: 1) What are the schools like? 2) I play football in England, will their be a football (soccer) team for me to join? 3) Is their alot to do for teenagers my age? 4) Will I make friends easily? (i know you cant really say but do people in Oz want to get to know English people) 5) Im not to worried about snakes or spiders but is thier anything I should look out for? Thank you for reading and I cant wait to get there. Lewis

Hi folks , I'll will be looking to go for a 475 ( think thats right numbers!) and fancy queensland. However as can't get that visa if wanting to go Brisbane . so I've been reading about Cairns . I know it never seems to let up heat wise but it looks amazing. I like the tropical feel. Can anyone tell me what life would be like there? and also where else in Queensland would be ok , that is not so small on population and jobs .

Hi.We are a family of 6 ( 2 adults 4 children) flying in and out of Brisbane and hiring a campervan for a 5 1/2 week reccie hoping to explore as far north as Cairns and as far south as Byron. We are spending our first week in Tamborine mountain (rental) as this is the place from our research that we feel we could possibly settle - it seems to tick every box for us. Would be interested to hear anyones advice on areas similar to Tamborine ie not suburbs- areas with fantastic views where you could have an acreage property yet not too remote. I am a childrens nurse so need to be near a hospital with a childrens ward and my OH works in arts management/music. Would love to be near enough to the sea to swim daily if you wanted to as I love sea swimming. Any ideas greatly appreciated! Would love anyones ideas for just great holiday spots too.

Hello everyone I am a 31 year old Butcher with a 3 year state sponsored visa for QLD. So much time, money and effort have gone into what I thought I wanted and now I am very scared and uncertain. I am Heading to Cairns and am very worried that I won't make friends or be able to find work. I keep imagining myself walking around on my own searching for work in Butchers and supermarkets but getting rejected. Its going to be so hard leaving people and yes I did know I would have to do it eventually but I just put it out of my mind. Now I have 4 weeks to go I have paid thousands for the visa through an agent, left my job, bought a one way ticket, my savings are in my new Australian account and now i don't think i can follow through with it. I have lately felt more scared than nervous and often get upset for hours at a time- how can i make the decision its very hard.:arghh: I know its a personal choice that only I can make but I simply cant make it. Has anyone had a similar experience? Thanks

All We have been in Cairns now since 7 January 2009 and have been busy sorting ourselves out with a new job, rental and the kids going to a new school and signing up for sports clubs. Now we have a chance to breathe we wondered if there were any other fellow PIOers around who might fancy a get together to compare stories and tips and generally chat. Look forward to hearing from you all. Kinney:notworthy:

Hi all I am looking for some information regarding butchery work- i am fully qualified with 10 years experience and am heading to the Cairns area to search for work. Are there any British Butchers who are making the move to Australia or who have already moved and would like to share their experience? Ideally I would like to know about wages, the best way to try to establish contacts before i go, how Aussie Butchers differ from british ones and what employment prospects are like around the Cairns area. Thanks- mike:confused:

Hi Guys can anyone please help with some information, we are looking to move to Adelaide or Cairns (Regeonal area,s) in march as my wife intends to start a hairdressing college in the CBD she has to study for 2 years before we can apply for residency, this is really our last chance having been let down time after time by false promises for the last 5 years in living down under. She is 43 in april and has to study for 2 years befor the age of 45, we have to move very quickly, I have my own wood flooring business but this will not help me as i am over the age of 45 and cannot apply for residency. We have to pay for the college course and our 7 year old son to got to school this is costing us over 50,000aud and the exchange rate is terrible, but this has taken most of our savings, What we need to know how easy would it to be to rent a house for under $350 a week in a nice area and good schools for our son ,and which area,s as looking at adelaide from a strangers point of view it looks quite daunting, The area must be if possible close to beaches be easy to take our boy to school and then my wife to get to college in the CBD bearing in mind he will have to go to early morning and and after school clubs, if and when i get a job, One more thing as the spouse i am only allowed to work 20 hours a week on her student visa so i wonder how easy it would be for me to get work with those restrictions, i am an experienced wood floor contractor (Fitting and sanding). We have a nice home in the UK and a decent lifestyle but i just want to get my children out of here now to give them a better chance at life in a warm safe enviorement what aus has to offer, Kindest regards to you all Alan & Gina

Hi, I'm hoping that there are some people out there that can help me. I live in Perth, but my eldest daughter lives back in the UK. She is just completing her last year at uni and has to produce a questionaire. She has to research the differences/attitudes of british migrants in "tropical" Cairns to the british in "outback" Northern Territory. This is where you "Cairns" people come in. She needs some people to answer the following questions: 1. What made you move from the UK to Cairns? 2. What attracted you to the "tropical" landscape of Cairns? 3. Was it easy settling into your environment (ie. climate/economy/people)? 4. Do you come across many British people in Cairns, are they a large majority of the community? If you could send me a private message with your answers that would be fantastic. Just a few lines for each answer is enough, you don't need to write a 2 page essay!! lol Thank you soooo much for all your help. Lynn x HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR

The gap between Australia's regional jobless rates is at its widest in almost 20 years. FAR north Queensland may be beautiful one day, perfect the next, but the economic climate in the tropical north has taken on a definite wintry chill. Am sure there is employment if you have skills in demand e.g. healthcare etc. Cairns had already been belted by decreasing tourist numbers from Japan etc. The article also includes data comparing suburbs in Melbourne etc.

Hello, We moved out from Norwich to Bundaberg about three years ago. Now we're making our next move to Cairns. Biggest issue for us is choosing the right school for our daughter, who is six. Would love to hear from anyone who can point us in the direction of a good primary school. I hear there are catchment areas so we don't want to choose a place to live that puts us in the wrong area for the right school. Thanks

What would you do if you were us? Should we return to Cairns or try Brisbane? Cairns: 1. Job to go to but low wages ($45K) 2. Lived there before, liked it, know it. 3. Brother lives there and have friends there. 4. High housing costs, rent and purchasing. 5. Very hot & humid in summer. Brisbane: 1. Seems to be plenty of jobs paying more money (80K) 2. Never been there 3. Don't know anybody there 4. Lower housing costs 5. Weather is a bit lass harsh in summer. Been racking my brains all weekend and still I can't decide!
