    Singapore to Cairns Direct Flights

Direct flights from Singapore to Cairns are set to resume after a six-year hiatus. The last direct flight from Singapore to Cairns was operated by the Qantas-owned Australian Airlines in June 2006. An announcement will be made at the state government’s Destination Q conference in the far north Queensland city next week and it is understood that Jetstar will operate the new flight. Tourism Tropical North Queensland chief Rob Giason says there’s been a lot of speculation the service might resume. “I’m not aware of any pending announcement but we’ve been working to re-develop a direct link with Singapore, it’s certainly one of our key goals in aviation,” he told AAP. Mr Giason said direct flights from the tourist hub would bring immense benefits. “Not only for the opportunity of linking with Europe and the UK, but also the growing Chinese and Indian markets,” he said. Mr Giason would welcome government support of the service initially, as “stimulus” to get the market moving. Queensland Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey says the government’s $8 million attracting aviation investment fund is wooing a number of new airlines and working on expanding existing services. “Discussions with Jetstar are ongoing and therefore commercial confidence remains in place,” she told AAP on Monday. “However, the government is hopeful of a positive outcome.” Jetstar would not confirm an announcement was pending. “Jetstar is often assessing different route options as part of our growing network and we never add weight to one option over another by commenting on speculation about where we might fly next,” it said.

    Cairns or Gold Coast???

G'day peoples. :em3600: I was born in Perth but have spent most of my life in England. I am returning to Australia this year with my husband and my son. Thing is, we can't decide between Cairns (Which looks simply stunning and never gets cold) and the Gold Coast (which may have more opportunities and things to do for teens). Any pros and cons on either place please...? Many thanks Chantel

    Will we like Cairns?!

Hi to everyone. This is my first post, but I've been reading posts for ages and have found Poms in Oz to be an absolutely brilliant source of information. Anyway, we are hoping to go to Oz next spring, possibly...and have already got our PR. Thing is we would really like a big change for our family, a different lifestyle, so have been seriously considering going to Cairns. But I wanted to ask about a few of my, or really my hubby's, concerns..he thinks it may be disappointing to move somewhere where we can't really swim in the sea. Is that generally true? Does it matter?? Also, I wondered if mossies are a problem. We have 4 kids: boys aged 11 and 13, and girls aged 5 and 3, and so health/safety issues are important. We are on a very tight budget to do this, and I get the impression that property is fairly reasonable compared with say, Melbourne which we have also been thinking about. Is it expensive in Cairns, would you say? Thanks in advance for any help/info on any of this. Imogen

Cairns Hotels most affordable in Australia

That's because there are sooooooo many of them, everywhere you look there is accommodation/hotels/back packers/ van parks Hotels in Cairns have been rated as the most affordable in Australia, offering better value than rival destinations. And now, it is time for Far Northerners to make sure everyone they know hears about that great value. Tourists paid an average of $119 a night for a hotel room in Cairns last year – the same as in 2010. In other tourism hot spots, such as the Whitsundays and Gold Coast, room rates went up $15 a night. Whitsundays visitors paid an average of $284 a night last year, which is 5 per cent more than they paid in 2008. Cairns’ rival destinations the Whitsundays, Byron Bay and the Sunshine Coast are the dearest places in Australia for a room, according to figures compiled by accommodation website hotels.com.

    New to Cairns / hello!

Hi to anyone who has relocated (or will do so soon) to Cairns. Have been here with my wife for a couple of months now living in Gordonvale, or, as some locals refer to it, "North Townsville" - it's a bit of a trek from town (almost $80 for a taxi home!). Moving house next week though, so wont be quite so far out. Currently enjoying the weather and outdoors lifestyle (BBQs, camping, fishing etc). Not sure what the coming rainy season will hold, but figure it's got to be far better than the North of England as at least it'll be warm here when it rains!

    Moving to Cairns

Hi there everyone. i'm new so please be gentle! Hubby has been offered a job in Cairns on a 457 Visa, hoping to be out there after Xmas if not before! Any opinions about the place...we visited friends in Tannum Sands (Gladstone) in June and loved it there, but wanted somewhere a bit more 'city' like  i also have 2 boys aged 10 and 11, and am looking for advice on good suburbs to bring them up....somewhere not to far from the city centre..... Any advice on Cairns would be gratefully appreciated! Very excited despite the cyclone/wet/dry season thing  Hot rains gotta be better than cold rain and snow right??

  17. Hi everyone, I am living with OH and daughter (almost 5) in Caloundra on the sunny coast. Before we had our daughter my OH and I lived in Palm Cove near Cairns for 3 years and loved it. I would like to move back to Cairns and have a place if we want it at Trinity Anglican School for Jan 2011 prep. Has anyone got kids there? (Marlin Coast campus for the little ones). Does anyone know what the school is like. It has a good academic record but that of course isn't everything. The other dilemma is that we also have the possibility of a move to the Gold Coast for work. We are definately not staying on the sunny coast despite really liking it but not sure which way to jump. Any help welcome. Lisa x
  18. Well I have, at long last found a good British Fish and Chip Shop in Cairns. He does a pommie special, fish, chips and mushy peas for $10 and you can even have batter bits. They do a great curry sauce as well.
