    Is Brisbane the one?

:? Hello, We are brand new to the forum and have found it totally brill for finding out what others think of oz and it has given us plenty to think about. We originally thought about moving 'out of the uk' about 4 years ago and got sidetracked to new zealand because we heard it was hard to get into australia, anyway eventually decided to just look into the possiblity of oz and we got enough points on the assessment check so are now thinking more seriously about doing it!! I am a primary school teacher and my oh is a mechanical engineer with 2 boys aged 9 and 7. We have done the really technical and sophisticated checks to decide where we would like to end up and the weather charts led us to Queensland!! well we did look at the cost of living and some pics of the scenery to decide as well. So are we headed in the right direction? Can somebody help and give us a few pointers if we will find our ideal location in or around Brisbane? We would like to go with a job offer for my oh ideally in heavy goods/material handling mechanical engineering in a nice, quiet place by the sea where it's not too humid or hot for our very pale skinned eldest to enjoy but with good weather to spend the majority of our lives outside, and where the pace of life is noticeably slower than here. We really don't want to go anywhere built up and are not bothered for loads of shops close to hand but within a reasonable distance. The selling point for our boys is by the sea with a bigger house than we could afford here. A selling point for my oh is if there is a clay pigeon shooting range in the area.. Not asking a lot are we? Any help would be appreciated. Donna

    Looking to move to Brisbane!!

Hi everyone. Have just found and registered with this site, so please be nice!! The wife & I have had enough of the UK and want to find a better life, but there is so much info, where do you start? 7. Hi All, My new husband and I are flying out to Brisbane 31.01.2007. Visa in hand! We are very excited! We are packing things up for the move. Trying to travel light!! Our thoughts have now moved to getting a job in Brisbane. How hard is it really, for a migrant to get a job. I'm not neccessarily talking about a skilled job. Just work in general. I have read some horror stories about how it could be 2 months before we get a job!! We would abviously like some money coming in as soon as possible. How hard is it to find general office jobs (admin, data entry etc)? Would we have more luck in the retail sector? I have quite a bit of customer service experience as well as office. I would greatly appreciate it of people could share there experiences of how they found it gettig a non skilled job or temparay work. Thanks in advance Heids

  10. Hi all, Me,wife Jo and baby Finlay have just joined this fab forum . We've applied for a skilled 136 visa through an agent which was lodged on the 1st of May 2006 and now we are doing tonnes of research about the place. We wondered if anyone can help us find some areas of Brisbane where there is not only lots of work for me (fitter / machinist) but where there's also loads of stuff for families to get involved in. If anyone can help us with some names of towns etc that we can look into further that would be great! Looking forward to hearing from you...

  12. Hi. I am currently going thru the TRA part at moment. Me and my family want to move to Brisbane/surrounding area. Does anyone have any reccomendations where jobs going for machine tool fitters / mechanical maintenance fitters. I have most experience on machine tool and also packaging flow wrap machines / cartoning machines. Also presses, injection moulding equipment, investment casting process etc. Are there any firms that would find this experience useful around brisbane. Expect to be moving next summer. One more crap winter here to enjoy due to in laws 60th in jan and one more footy season. Then will be swapping the blue and white stripes of the baggies for the dayglow orange colours of queensland roar. Always enjoy footy more in the warm sunshine.
  13. Hi there, does anyone have any information on finding a registered child-minder in Brisbane? We've been told that nursery places are hard to come by with long waiting lists and we were wondering what the alternatives are. Much the same as the UK, with registered childminders etc? All information / advice and guidance gratefully received! Best wishes - Mark and Jo and Fin
  14. I am moving over to the Sunshine coast just above Brisbane in September (as long as the visa arrives soon). I did go over for a visit back in January and made a few phone calls to check out the work situation, but I was wondering if anyone out there knows what its like finding work over there in this aspect of the building trade? We nearly decided to go and live in Perth, but theres way too many Brits, like Blackpool in the sun. Queensland is fantastic!

    Dublin to Brisbane

Hi all! We have today sent off form to have hubby assessed and would love to know how long this takes roughly with the TRA. Also I see that some people apply for their visa directly, others use an agency..can anyone advise on the best way to proceed? One agency siad it could take a min of 14 months but I see some people have managed to get their visa in 4 - 8 months! We are looking for a 136 visa so perhaps this makes a difference? Anyway look forward to sharing all our ups and downs with you all! Di

My question is : Where in Sydney is a good suburb to live in ?? we are looking to be near people but a house that is detached, also close to a good school train for comuting etc... We have family in Canberra and Brisbane . We need advice on renting , banks , buyng cars and our driving licences ,jobs and schools Not much then  Also since we got our visa , my hubbie has been diagnosed with type 2 diebeties , his treatment in the uk is free for life, how will this affect us in Australia ?? any advice on this would be much appreciated I also hope to get to know people through this forum also Regards Paula

    Brisbane Universities/Fees

Hi All My family & I are hopfully moving out to Brisbane after my eldest daughter has finished her A levels (Sept 2007). We've started the application process off & are awaiting for my TRA assessment to be sent back. My daughter is hoping to go to University in Brisbane/Queensland shortly after taking up residency. Can anyone help me by telling me if we would still have to pay overseas Uni fees, because of having to be in Oz for 2 years until being granted citizenship? As anyone any recommenedations as to Uni's. in Queensland? Regards Mick
  22. Hello all...being somewhat of a virgin to this forum and to the whole emigrating thing too..can anyone shed any light on the most ideal area to live in..Having never been to Oz (but partner lived in coogee for 2 years but thats looking quite pricey) we are thinking of moving over there permanantly with our 5 year old daughter. We kinda think somewhere between brisbane and sydney, neither of us are city dwellers nor total out in the sticks country bumkins types... I guess my wish list is somewhat challanging...so here goes... a) 4 bed house for under $400K in area suitable for families (ie..not a rough dodgy area) b) has excellent primary/secondary school c) local amenties within short drive/walk away d) beach not to far either e) easy train ride or 1-2 hr drive to nearest city f) oh and a local vet would be good...as need to find work as a VN. well if anyone can advise on an area that fills my probably unreachable list...you would be a complete saint and it would at least give me somewhere to start aiming for when we go on our recky visit next year. cheers HCC
