  1. Can anyone please offer any advice on the following: We are a young family with two children aged 1 and 3, in the process of applying for a residence visa. We are looking to move to the adelaide suburbs but have never been there, any info would be of use; lifestyle, houses (min 3 bed family home), good/bad suburbs, the people, job prospects(i'm an engineering patternmaker), weather, is it a good place to bring up children, schools, healthcare etc. We are not 'city' people so we are not looking for the bright lights of Sydney, just relaxed family living. We travelled from Melbourne to Cairns in a campervan several years ago so we have a good idea about Australia in general, we just need more specific info on the area. Thanks.

    relocating to adelaide

Hi, I am new to the site, myself and family are currently waiting for our 457 visa to be finalised and then we will be on our way.(hopefully) My husband has been offered a position on the Dampier project but we will be moving to adelaide as he has family there. He will fly in and out on a rota bases for his job so it will just be and my 2 boys aged 9 and 5 living in adelaide. Just really wanted to touch base and see if there is anyone who can offer us any advice on relocating. I've been doing some research but i'm finding it hard to get my head around all the information out there. lol I'm nervous about what to expect, and i'm pretty clueless about what i should be looking for in an area to settle in. I really like the look of Hallet Cove area but most important to me is good schools for my boys. I am looking forward to being able to spend more time outside(english weather doesn't really allow for that) and getting my boys involved in clubs etc. As i've never visited and have no friends there, i will be starting from scratch any advice would be greatly appreciated. I was told there is quite a large expat community online and would like to get involved in that if possible. Thanks for reading Lisa

Fly into Adelaide, out of Brisbane

Hi, I've only ever flown into and out of the same airport (or had a one way ticket and purchased the return a year or so later). We need to validate our visas and are planning end of Jan/beginning of Feb, probably 27th Jan and return sometime around the 11th/12th Feb. We want to fly into Adelaide and spend a few days looking around, then an internal flight to Sydney, probably hire a car or van and make our way up to Byron to see friends (we want to pop in at Yamba also so not going to fly). We will then fly out of Brisbane. Anyway, can anyone suggest the best /cheapest/easiest way to arrange these flights? I don't mind which London airport we fly from, but Heathrow would be preferable. Thanks!

    The Best Suburbs in Adelaide

TEA Tree Gully and Hawthorndene are big winners in the Valuer General's quarterly property figures. Data released by the Valuer General shows Tea Tree Gully's median house price jumped 34.7 per cent to $444,450 for the year to the end of September, compared with $330,000 for the same period in 2010. Hawthorndene's median house price is now $485,000, up 20.5 per cent from $402,500. News is not as good for homeowners in Fulham Gardens, where the median price dropped 23.6 per cent from $720,000 to $550,000 in just one year. Also experiencing falls were Salisbury Heights, dropping 18.5 per cent to $317,750 and Somerton Park, down 18.3 per cent to $635,000. The figures show South Australia has not been protected from a nationwide fall in house prices caused by the economic slowdown, with a 2.7 per cent fall in median house prices across the state and a 10.4 per cent fall within inner-metropolitan Adelaide. Real Estate Institute of South Australia president Greg Nybo said the fall was slight and reflected "absolute resilience" in the SA market. "Even though our volumes ... are probably down 20 per cent, to nearly come back (to a) 2.6 per cent (fall) just shows the real strength of the market," Mr Nybo said. "While days on the market might have extended out significantly, the median sales price is really holding the line." He said the 10.4 per cent drop in the inner-metropolitan areas - which takes in Medindie, Walkerville and North Adelaide - could reflect caution after 10 years of "spectacular growth". Ray White Blackwood principal Brenton Craggs - himself a former Hawthorndene resident - was not surprised by growth in his old suburb. "You get the far-reaching views, the tree tops and the birdlife," he said. Kylie Howard and her family moved to Hawthorndene from Woodville North at Easter because of the family-friendly appeal. "We wanted to find a nicer place to bring up our children," she said.

  11. Hi, Im a 24 year old pom currently on my second year of the temp working holiday visa. I've been offered a job doing solar work, providing I get qualified to work unsupervised first. Am looking for the quickest, cheapest way of doing this (who isn't?). Thinking of doing the ARTC application, but am not sure if this will get me able to work unsupervised, am also not sure how long this will take and if its the best option for sparkies already in the country. I'm currently in Adelaide if that makes a difference. Any help is appreciated, I need to get qualified ASAP to get this job, my tax refund money is running low.
  12. Tourism Australia is running an online campaign at the moment, promoting locations around Australia in short online videos, featuring, backpackers, tour guides etc to lure more young people Down Under to work and play. The Tourism Australia campaign, 30 days in Oz, consists of 30 online videos, each following someone different in locations around Australia, with each demonstrating in 60 seconds why "there's nothing like Australia for young travellers." Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy said the campaign would promote the Working Holiday Visa and encourage young people to consider Australia as a place to work or travel, particularly those leaving school or on a Gap Year. "One of Tourism Australia's objectives is to get more young people to holiday in Australia. These travellers often become lifelong advocates, influencing friends and family of all ages to holiday in Australia and returning themselves later in life," he said. "We also know from research that many of these visitors are backpackers, who spend more time travelling and explore more of Australia than other travellers, which is one of the reasons the youth market is such an important one for us." 16. Hello, Im very new to POMSINOZ. Me and my partner are applying for our visas now , my partneris being nomiated by his employer. We have just got to the part of medicals... the bill is stacking up. Im hoping someone will be able to help me. My partner has three children from previous relationships two are 5 and the other is 1. I know from reading the threads that even tho they are not emigrating, medicals are still required. There is no way on this earth that the two exes with agree to anyhting like that. My partner has very limited access or none at all. I was wondering if letters from the mothers declining medicals would do... or does it have to be a sol ? Some one has mentioned going to a family law court and getting something? - i need a cheap answer  I am very desperate now!!! HELP ME PLEASE :arghh: Katie xx
  17. Hi, Just trying to sort out the logistics of our next move and wondered how long it takes for removals/shipping to go from Adelaide to Brisbane? I was thinking of having the house packed up on the Wednesday, cleaning up Thursday and leaving Adelaide the afternoon of the Friday when the kids break up from school. I would have thought it would take them 3/4 days to reach their destination by road. Or do the containers go up on a train??? It's all new to me and I haven't the foggiest. I'm sure many of you have made this move, so any advice is appreciated:smile: Thanks in advance Deb
  18. Hi, my family and i are moving to South Australia next year, and we are considering moving to Port Lincoln as opposed to Adelaide. I would greatly appreciate any feedback from anyone who has been to Port Lincoln. Is it too quiet for a family, would we be better to settle in Adelaide where there is more going on? What are the beaches like?

    hard time settling

Hi everyone, my name is Jess. I moved to Adelaide about 6 years ago from a small community in Wales. I was 13 when my family moved (19 now), they had to drag me kicking and screaming! It was such a huge change for me, the culture is very different here compared to where I came from. It took around 1-2 years for our family to settle. but after 6 years of living here it still doesn't feel right. The move made me an incredibly shy person, at first mostly because I had a strong welsh accent and people couldn't understand me. My family life may have settled but my social life sure didn't. I've drifted around groups of friends and can't seem to find people I really click with. It was really hard to leave my close friends in Wales, the people I grew up with and went through school with. I've found friends through school but not like the close bff kinda friendships I had back in Wales. I still feel like that shy foreign girl at the back of the class. Sometimes I think about going home, but I know it wouldn't be the same anymore. Has anyone else had a hard time settling?

    Primary schools in Adelaide

I'm going to do a reccie in Adelaide later on this year, to look at areas to live around Blackwood/Flagstaff but also at primary schools for my daughter (aged 5, will be coming up 6 by the time we move). I'd appreciate some advice from locals about the best primary schools in this area. Daughter is rather advanced academically so would prefer a flexible school which would be able to cater for this. Preferably non-private as I can't afford this at the mo! Thanks :-)

    Adelaide bound!

Hello all, I've just joined! I'm at the beginning of my emigration journey after getting a brilliant job offer in Flagstaff, Adelaide. I'm planning to move out to Adelaide with my daughter (aged 5) and my mum. Would love to hear from anyone who's made the move to Adelaide, particularly advice on schools and househunting. Looking forward to being there next year!
