7. Hi, This week I was granted my permanent residence visa for Australia along with my girlfriend. We're both still bouncing off the walls, can't believe it finally came through. So I thought I'd post some of the timing details, I remember checking my application status daily and searching online for any clues of how long it might take, hopefully this will help others who are still waiting. Application lodged on 29/09/2010 Additional information requested 26/05/2011 - police checks, medicals and additional proof of my de facto relationship. Additional information sent 24/06/2011 (police check took around 2 weeks to be completed - UK) Visa granted 21/09/2011 Any questions let me know Andy

  17. Hi All arrived in Bris on 2/9/11. Staying in Ashmore Palms temporarily. Will be working in Mater as midwife. Looking for houses this week. Not 100% on areas have a long short list somewhere between CBD and here. Prob not as far south as Southport due to commute. We have met some lovely people so far although most have younger children. Ours are 15,13,11 ( three girls) so if anyone is in similar position drop us a line we could meet up. Keen to find area and schools now so girls can start making friends. So far so good. Enjoying the sun, scenery and exploring the area Thanks in Advance Jo x

    Brisbane Festival 2011

After the Winter Festival and the Ekka the next cab off the rank is the great Brisbane Festival to welcome in spring. As my programme arrived the other day I thought I would give a overview for those new to Brisbane so they don't miss the fun. Brisbane Festival runs for 3 weeks and starts this Saturday (3rd - 24th Sep). It is held in venues all over the city from Southbank, QPAC, Judith Wright Centre, Powerhouse, Metro Arts, King George Square etc etc...It contains all types and styles of performance from the world of dance, music, theatre, comedy etc. Looking at the programme I reckon there really is something for everyone. It starts with a big bang on Saturday with the massive Riverfire: Riverfire is huge, around 500,000 people attend, so get there really early to grab your spot. Some new surprises this year apparently. Amongst many other opening day events I noticed the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra will perform a free "lunchtime symphony" at 1pm and 3:30pm in the Roma Street Parklands that might be worth getting a picnic made up for. From Sunday night, in a first for Brisbane and Australia, a new of kind of choreographed laser and light show from the guys that did the Sydney Olympics will beam from the bridges and buildings of Brisbane. The Santos City of Lights spectacular will light up Brisbane every night for the 3 weeks: Apparently the best vantage point will be the Santos Lounge setup on the cultural forecourt (outside QPAC on the river). There is also going to be some new fangled light installation named The Liquid Interactive Light Scope to try: ("8 Xbox Kinects, with 500 LED Screens and an original soundtrack, with crowd based human interaction, all in a large scale environment – a 30metre tunnel") There is also other free stuff all around south bank and other venues around the city eg. the Princess Cruises Lawn at Little Stanley St for picnics with free movies and live music. The Wunder Bar will be open at QPAC from 8:30pm from Wed - Sat for "sassy soulstresses, Bohemian jazzmen, funked up folk singers, tango nuevo, stomping piano and swampy beats. Featuring the stunning set-piece from Wagner’s epic opera, The Ring Cycle, Wunder Bar is the official after-party of Brisbane Festival" Found the link to a bunch of free performances on at the Wunder Bar at QPAC: http://www.brisbanefestival.com.au/Free/Wunder-Bar The Courier Mail Spiegeltent will be a temporary Belgian cabaret club setup in King George Square for the duration of the festival with a host of performances. You can buy a discount pack of tickets to see multiple performances at the club. These sassy girls are the opening night party at the club. I love this stuff: I'll post a few events I noticed in the programme that seem worth considering (amongst many others). You can see all of them at http://www.brisbanefestival.com.au/Default.aspx (Repost)

  21. Well Hello All Just a few short lines to say I'm here finally in Sydney!!!! Arrived last night at Sydney airport and am now at home. Flew with Cathay Pacific, (not sure I'd go with again as space around the seats seemed so non-existant although the staff were pretty good). I was over my excess but the lovely lady let me off a couple of kilos but still had to pay a whopping 78.00pounds. Anyhow forget that - I'm here and its freezing, so going back to bed after I've done some more postings. Good luck to everyone in the middle of or nearing the end of this migrant process. I'm prepping for stage 2 now!

In a ranking of 140 cities around the world, Melbourne was given a score of 97.5 per cent. 4 Aussie cities in the top ten! 24. My family are relocating to the Sunshine Coast in November and are looking for a house to rent. We've looked at holiday lets but because of the time of year they are either extremely expensive or don't have availability over Christmas. We'd like to find a house in the Maroochy/Alex Hills/Cotton Tree/Mooloolaba areas with 3 beds or more and aircon. (A pool would be nice but it's not essential.) We're a professional couple with teenage children and don't want to pay any more than $450 a week. Can anyone help me please??
