Happy New Year!!! Only a couple of changes this month. First Home Buyer Grant As from the 1st January 2010 the FHOG has now been reduced to just $7,000 for both established and construction. You can still qualify for the previous amounts of $10,500 for established and $14,000 for construction if your Offer & Acceptance form or Building Contract was signed before 1st Jan. Keystart Home Loans (only lend in WA) Keystart Home Loans is a Government funded lender that only lends in WA and only to Australian citizens and perm visa holders only. They have had terrible service levels in the past, but due to the changes they brought in late last year, they are now on a par with the big 4 banks for service. They increased their interest rate for new borrowers to approx 0.75% obove the big 4 banks and reduced their maximum loan from 98% of the value, to 96% of the value. Big bonus with Keystart is that they do not charge Lenders Mortgage Insurance, so this can save people thousands of dollars.

Hi everyone, My partner and I would love to move to Australia, we got back from a holiday just a week ago and want to move there and try it out for the much longer term. When I did online skill's test last year we seemed to pass with him as the main person on visa, but when I tried again other day it says we don't have enough points. He's a welder and that seems to still be on the list as a 60 point job. He trained in it at college and has been doing the job for years. We are both in our 20's so are under the 45 age limit!! Has the skills visa's suddenly changed. I worry we won't be able to get in  I know the visa process will be pricey,(I'm led to believe £4000-5000) so don't wanna spend that money if we won't be successful. Can we make our Australian dream come true with my partners years experience at welding? Any help would be great.:notworthy:

Hi there, I'm a stay at home mum, Sophie (35) (and hubby Joe 38, teacher) and we're coming to Sydney in April for a validation trip/recce. We're staying in Drummoyne, we've got a home exchange for 5 weeks, including a car, so we're mobile. I have two children, Jeannie who is five and Eddie who will have just turned three when we arrive and I'd love to meet up with other parents with children and hear about things to do with kids in and around Sydney. Perhaps a meet up in a park or a playgroup or playcentre???? Would anyone like to meet up with us and tell us what it's all about?

Anyone moving back in 2010 and worried about what they can afford?

Were newbies, but love this website. We have been here 6.5 years and have had a fab time. We have really made the most of all the opportunities Oz gave us. I spent the first couple of years really homesick but got on with life and we are now further than we would have been if we had stayed in the uk. However and its a big however, we now have a daughter and another one due in 8weeks and last year we had our first home -holiday and absolutely loved it....and something just felt right. We didnt think it would but it planted a very definite seed and we are hoping to move back at the end of the year....moneydependent obviously. The only problem I can see is the housing issue......I just cant get over house prices, rentals seem to be the same as over here but i cant justify moving the family from the whitsundays to a mid-terrace for the same price And believe me I am trying:err: I am feeling the pull now more than ever but looking for reassurance, it will be the right move if we do it, family, scotch eggs, skips, monster munch, proper chinese take away(sorry :laugh:i am pregnant) Cheers Lis -

Hi All Legislation has either been passed earlier this week or is about to be passed (I'm not sure which) that will have a substantial impact on some of the people who hope to apply to migrate to Australia but who have not yet lodged an application for a GSM visa. GSM = General Skilled Migration = no employer sponsorship. GSM visas can be unsponsored, State sponsored or family sponsored but they are not employer sponsored. The relevant document is here: http://www.comlaw.gov.au/ComLaw/Legislation/LegislativeInstrument1.nsf/0/4BD460987FA1AD09CA25768D0007252A/$file/0928290A091201EV.pdf A well-known migration agent gave me his initial reaction to the document above in an e-mail yesterday evening. I quote verbatim: I wondered where my informant obtained his information till I happened to look at ComLaw for a completely unrelated purpose just now. As far as I can see, there is nothing on the DIAC website about these latest changes from 1st Jan 2010 as yet? I can't find anything specific, anyway. I think we will see more about all this soon - probably next week sometime, I suspect. Cheers Gill

Would be interested in any advice that can be offered regarding schools (primary and high), the best places to live and any other info that could help us. Thanks x

Who would have thunk it: Christopher Hitchens in Australia in 2009, Professor Richard Dawkins here in 2010 - amazing. I went to the Festival of Dangerous Ideas in Sydney, and I will be in Melbourne next year for the Global Atheist Convention. Naturaly I am attending on my own (I have never met anyone where I live who has ever heard of either of these people, mind you a significant percentage have never heard of Charles Darwin either) anyone else booked.
