    The Official Weather Thread

My daughter was driving to Glasgow for a wedding yesterday. The A1 was nose to tail traffic doing under 50mph, driving rain and sleet, the car rocked by very strong winds and she was forced to turn back at Scotch Corner. Scotland was cut off!

    The Ashes 2021-22

I’ve always objected to the word whining or whinging which implies that the complaint is unjustified or of little importance. I heard it used a great deal in Oz whenever I raised an objection to something which was patently ridiculous but had been done that way for years. (An example off this topic - the school where I taught French had 2 streams, advanced and standard, which was fine except it was the parents who chose which stream their child went into!)

I know no one will care but...........

It was interesting that the BBC bleeped out « paki » during its reporting of Azeem Rafiq’s testimony before the Senate enquire into racism at Yorkshire CCC. Sky didn’t !

    Selling House in Qld

Obviously different states have different rules. We sold our property in Victoria in March and had to sign some form which the solicitor dealt with as part of the conveyancing. The money from the sale went into our Australian bank account and we transferred it in stages to our UK account. There was no tax involved.

After a good shipping company in Brisbane

Hi Lee, Just avoid Palmers. We were very disappointed with their service. It’s worth asking whoever you choose for details of the actual shipping. Will it be just one ship or like ours three different ones with the consequent delays involved. You also need to check who the UK removal firm is and where they are based. Despite telling Palmers we were moving to Yorkshire our UK firm was based in Croydon and took 5 weeks before delivering because they needed a load for the return journey! Good luck

No problem with the dressers but jackets and wool trousers will have to be cleaned. I just hope that works but I know what you mean about not wearing half of them. I’m already wondering what on earth I brought some of our stuff half-way round the world for!

I know no one will care but...........

IKNWC…but 🥳🥳🥳 our container arrived from yesterday after EIGHT months. No mould or mildew thank heavens and only one casualty, the glass of a picture broken. However, clothes which were supposedly in a hanging wardrobe were actually flat packed. Trousers and jackets look like concertinas and are unwearable. According to Palmers removals, we should have been informed clothes would be packed in this way. Needless to say we weren’t! Another black mark Palmers!

The percentage of deaths to numbers vaccinated was never adequately stated.

I know no one will care but...........

Interesting that the French are looking for compensation. I don’t remember any compensation for Astra Zeneca when the French and others exaggerated their claims that the AZ vaccine caused deaths.

I know no one will care but...........

I taught in a large school in Yorkshire which had a 12% ethnic intake. Whenever an altercation between pupils was investigated it was invariably because someone had called someone else a Paki. I wonder when you left the UK Parley because this has been an offensive name for decades and there is no way someone like Michael Vaughan would have unaware of its impact.

    Australian and UK Covid Responses

Sorry I didn’t mean that in a general way. I was answering Parley’s comment on ditching AZ. His comments on AZ are always negative, so much so that I suspect him of having shares in Pfizer. If he does, he’ll be a millionaire given the profits Pfizer have made from their vaccine.

I know no one will care but...........

Just to add that I have no problem referring to myself as a Brit just as I suspect those of you who are Australian would happily call yourself Aussies, but no one of Pakistani heritage would call themselves Paki.
  13. Cup Final 1973

I know no one will care but...........

I don’t think calling anyone an Aussie or a Brit is offensive whereas in the UK at least calling someone a Pakki is racist and derogatory. It doesn’t even refer to the person’s nationality as anyone from the Indian sub continent can be referred to as a Pakki.

    Australian and UK Covid Responses

I think it’s because most Brits had the AZ vaccine originally so a booster of Pfizer gives a more complete protection. There’s no indication of Britain ditching AZ - despite your very many negative comments!
  15. Almost 15 years in Australia and I’ve been back in England one week. In no particular order these things have jumped out at me: post delivery twice a day as well as on a Saturday with online shopping delivered same day milk in glass bottles delivered by a local milkman central heating radiators - I know we shouldn’t need them in May but we’re in Yorkshire ! I never got used to heating vents in the ceiling in Victoria. Match of the Day on a Saturday evening with Gary Lineker real Weetabix cheap everything - mobile pay as you go a third of what I paid in Australia, vitamin tablets half price, free bus pass for seniors that can be used all over England I’m still self isolating so I expect there’s more to come!

    Ping Pongers

We arrived back in May and have been very impressed by how quickly our needs have been met on the NHS, including an endoscopy for my husband which had been postponed 3 times in Melbourne and hearing aids for myself.

Decided NOT to retire in UK

Plus free NHS hearing aids - had mine fitted today and they are so neat. Also went to make a will on Monday and learnt that inheritance tax on a couple only kicks in when you reach £1 million of assets. That’s a lot more generous than I thought.

My husband stopped drinking alcohol 18 months ago. He has been very surprised at the variety and quality of non alcoholic beer available in England, both in the supermarket and in pubs, with some pubs even having it on tap. According to him the taste is excellent.

    Britain v France Fishing War

I don’t agree with the last part of your translation. After negotiable the French reads “ and there is more harm / damage in leaving the Union than in remaining.”

Container delays - charged more by shipping company

Just an update on our removal saga from Victoria to Yorkshire, which started on March 15th. The container arrived in London on September 16th and was moved to PSS’s warehouse on October 5th after I’d paid the demurrage charges. Since then, nothing. We are still waiting for our goods to be delivered to Yorkshire and the earliest possible date is the week beginning November 8th. That hasn’t been confirmed but it doesn’t appear to be a shortage of lorry drivers rather waiting to find something for the return journey to London. Meanwhile, we continue to camp in our new house. The Australian side of our removal, Palmers, have been absolutely useless, not even replying to emails. If you are returning to the UK make sure you ask about shipping routes (ours involved 3 ships and took over 12 weeks for the actual shipping), who the English partners are and ask for guarantees about delivery.

    Creating a Gov.UK account

I’m assuming you’re talking about your pension estimate Blue Flu but it seems incredibly generous if you have only 16 years NI contributions.

    Creating a Gov.UK account

Are you old enough to turn your super into a self-managed super fund? You can then transfer the money into your bank account. As it’s not an income it’s not taxed.

    Living in New Zealand

We went to NZ for a short visit a few years ago and landed in Christchurch about 5am. The rental car wasn’t available until 8am so spent a couple of hours dozing in the airport. I thought it strange that passengers were being asked to go to the chicken counter….but assumed that because it was very early morning the KFC staff doubled as airline staff.
