Interesting Facts about where you live.

The heritage walk round Bawtry was fascinating from the discovery that Roman remains were found where the Roman road from Lincoln to York crosses the river Idle, that we were once a river port trading with the Baltic to the establishment of Bawtry as a “new town” at the end of the 12th century, granted a charter for a fair in 1213 by King John. Bawtry Hall was built in 1785 with its dower house intended for the widow. The hall was used as bomber command by the RAF during the war and as recently as the Falklands. It’s now a very popular wedding venue. I discovered a link with Australia in one of the churchyards.

Interesting Facts about where you live.

OH went on his bike ride this morning and passed the church in Austerfield built in 1080 where Bradford was baptised. He snapped this Tympanum over the south doorway believed to be 8th century!

Interesting Facts about where you live.

Apparently our claim to fame is that two prominent Pilgrim Fathers who left England for America in 1620 to enjoy religious freedom lived nearby: William Bradford lived less than a mile in one direction and William Brewster lived 1.5 miles in the other direction. The font where Bradford was baptised is still in one of the local churches and he became governor of the Plymouth colony in Massachusetts. Heritage walk tomorrow so more to follow!

Absolutely agree, but the history books list him as number 1

    Platinum Jubilee 👑

If she can hang on for another 2 years she will take over from Louis XIV as the longest reigning monarch and we might have another party! 🥳

The Slave Trade and removal of statues

Given the rise in the cost of living, I don’t know how people can afford to waste eggs!

The Slave Trade and removal of statues

It’s had eggs thrown at it and was then daubed with red paint. In an interview on local television one of those protesting asserted his right in a democracy to deface the statue!

    Platinum Jubilee 👑

Our weather was dreadful on Sunday, raining and cold. Thankfully our afternoon tea was held indoors complete with quiz on all things Royal. Did you know the Queen’s favourite colour is blue and her favourite football team is West Ham? They were two I got wrong….but I still managed to snag a prize!

I know no one will care but...........

Our local news covers Humberside so we’ve had a lot of joyful scenes from Grimsby. It’s amazing how much it means to the supporters. Sorry Rallyman.

Moving Back to UK after 18 years

Your UK pension isn’t frozen the day you leave the UK if you haven’t already started receiving it, which you wouldn’t have given your age. Once you reach pensionable age and elect to receive the pension in Australia it is then frozen at that level.

I know no one will care but...........

Yes, but with respect, I believe you left everything English behind you many many decades ago!

I know no one will care but...........

Moving to another city or country does not remove the associations and love you have for your home team. I doubt any true football supporter ever transfers allegiance. I could never work up any enthusiasm for either Carlton or Geelong which were the teams supported by my closest friends in Oz…. Interesting to ask if migrants continue to support England in the Ashes or enjoy UK success at the Olympics. I certainly did while loving my time in Australia.

I think he’s being rude about Wrexham. I left Sunderland in 1973 but they’ll always be my team. The shock of going from Premiership to Division 1 in consecutive seasons was tough but you don’t get to choose your team do you? I remember the Aussie wife of a English Liverpool supporter who was moaning about his team asking him why he didn’t just support a different one!

I know no one will care but...........

My brother still lives in Sunderland. He said the atmosphere in the city was electric with thousands on the streets even with nearly 50000 away in London. You’d think we’d won the World Cup!

IKNWC but…..after 4 seasons in the wilderness, Sunderland have won promotion to the Championship! Wembley was a sea of 47 000 red and white supporters.️

I know no one will care but...........

We went to watch day 3 of the Ashes at the MCG in December 2006, three months after migrating to Australia. The train was a little late so we were still outside when we heard the massive shout signalling an Aussie batsman out. We were full of hope ….but spent the whole day watching Mathew Hayden and Andrew Symonds piling on the runs. I think both scored over 150 and England lost . Symonds seemed to lose favour though and I don’t remember him featuring a great deal afterwards.
