The occupation is also available on the SOL. You may be eligible for visas 189/190 and 489. For these subclass of visas, you can only apply after you submitted an expression of interest, got an invite to apply. You need to nominate an occupation from either the Skilled occupation list or Consolidated Skilled Occupation List. As an electrician and plasterer, you can nominate either one of the occupations. Have your skill assessed by Trades Recognition Australia. You would also need to pass the point test. Currently the passing mark is 60 points. Whilst it is not necessary for you to do the English language Test if you are a English native speaker, You might want to consider doing one to boost your score on the point test. Hope this helps. I strongly suggest before you want to retrain yourself before coming to Australia, is to find out if your qualification is going to be recognised in Australia, if you are thinking of working in Australia. I know gaining entry into an Australian university with your prior learning in a tertiary education institution in most countries generally is not really a problem. However, employment in Australia...your overseas qualification needs to be assessed by a relevant assessing authority. Why not consider getting yourself retrain in Australia instead? you may do volunteer work on a student visa that is not counted towards your 40 hours of work per fortnight if 1) your main purpose in Australia is to study and any amount of volunteer work you do remains incidental to this 2) the work involved would not be undertaken by an Australian resident in return for wages 3) the work is genuinely voluntary for a not for profit organisation and no wage, cash or any payment is received in return for any of the work you did. No one can tell you for sure whether or not you will pass your skill assessment. Its a case by case basis. everyone's situation and skill level is different. Whether or not with 60 points you will get an invite to apply, this is again on a case by case basis. just apply and see how you go. Whilst 60 points is the passing mark for visa 189/190. The higher point , the higher chance of getting an invite. Getting the required number of points does not guarantee you an invitation. It also depends upon availability of spaces within the selected ANZSCO occupation quota (ceiling) and also how competitive your score is.
