  1. Hi Mark, Thanks for the quick reply, that's super helpful. I have misread then, I thought if I submitted an EOI then I couldn't book a medical unless (or hopefully until) invited. OK, so he would scrape in with 60 points if he gets 15 for his qualifications. Perhaps an English test would be a good idea to boost his points! Can he submit the EOI and then update it once he does an IELTS?
  2. Hi, we have been in Australia for a month on a 457, husband is a doctor working for RFDS. We would like to put in for a permanent visa as soon as possible and think we would qualify for a 189, husband's job is on the SOL. I am nervous of starting the EOI until I have everything straight, so a couple of questions I can't seem to find the answer to- Are qualifications points only given for those qualifications from an Australian educational institution? In that case my husband's medical degree from the UK would only count for 10 points as "An award or qualification recognised by the assessing authority in the assessment of the skilled occupation". This has confused me as there is then a separate section for Australian study requirement. If it does count then is a medical degree considered a doctorate (strictly speaking it isn't, although they are called doctor), which is 20 points, or a bachelor's for 15 points? We are UK born, do we need an English language test? If not, does he get any 'automatic' points? I am only taking these questions from the info on the immigration website about the points test, I haven't actually tried in the Skill Select website- can I do that to get a clearer idea of the questions (will it give me a clearer idea?!) and not submit it if I am unsure. Also, should I look at booking medicals before the EOI is submitted? I know you can't do it once it is in and you are waiting to be selected, and in the UK it took a really long time for an appt to be available. We would probably go to Sydney for ours (I think husband's 457 one can be used but the rest of the family will need one), are appts easy to get? Basically, he doesn't get enough points unless we get some for english language, or more than 10 for qualifications. We didn't need to do the test for the 457 so don't have it already, and other online points tests available seem to give him more points for his quals, so I'm clutching at straws that this is the case and he won't have to go through the faff of an IELTS. Thanks to anyone who can help x
  3. Thanks, I did read through the thread but not being a car person I was interested in what someone who knew what they were talking about would say I understand it is all about those costs you listed, I just found it hard to work those out <dunce> and Iron Chef seemed very helpful in doing that here. Also, we weren't worried about resale costs, we had planned to keep it. Seems like a lot to spend on an old car though, however reliable it is! I have found an on line calculator provided by one shipping company, they also state that a value of £6,000 is pretty much the cut off to it being financially worthwhile. It's not always all about the finances though is it?! I also read that it might be much more to insure an import anyway, thanks for your reply, I think we have decided to sell here
  4. Hi, I wonder if you can help me, we are wondering whether to bring our car, apologies if I haven't got all the details right, DH is on nights so can't ask him! 1998 Toyota Land Cruiser Amazon 100 series SUV 4164cc ]Diesel ]Automatic ]4wd About 100,003 aircon £6,500 ]I'm a bit rubbish at this, and they all have higher miles, but I think $17,000? It's in great condition with FSH if that's relevant (and we love it) We are going to rural NSW many thanks for this!
  5. Ok, thanks. That's pretty scary, so no chance of PR without your job being on those? hopefully it will take a while for things to change. Speaking to DH about it and the guy who is quoted there is on Twitter saying it wasn't quite what he was saying- rather that rural doctors need more support to stay in place. Judging by how short they are of doctors in rural areas I think it will be a while before anything can change. nevertheless, in light of all this we will be looking to go for PR as soon as possible! Thanks all.
  6. Sorry, I realise I look a bit like I haven't been doing any reading myself here. I have been, I just struggled to understand the difference between the possible visas. However I'm now worried that even with employer nomination, PR will be dependant on the job still being on the SOL. Does anyone know if this is right?
  7. Ah ok, so he doesn't have to have an employer sponsor him, but if he does it is 'easier'? (Easy could never be the right word when it comes to visas!) He is pretty good on his skills so wouldn't worry about an assessment. It seems it would be a good idea to ask them straight away then, I think they would be supportive of it but will probably want to make sure he fits in and is good at his job first. If it is taken off the list, does that mean we won't get PR even with an employer sponsoring him? We are going to be rural, and as the article says it does seem that it is hard to keep Drs in these posts. If an employer sponsors you for PR, how does it work? Are you then tied to that job for a number of years?
  8. Hi, we are awaiting our 457 visas, husband is a doctor and has a job in a regional town starting as soon as we can get there. The job is initially for a year, but if all goes well can be extended. Everything is finally done on the visas (submitted end of June but AHPRA bit has only just gone in). Agent seems to think it will be done soon. We we are hoping to stay, that's our plan. We thought we would need to start thinking about PR after we had been out there a year, and in fact some people had told us that we had to wait two (although we couldn't see how that worked). I started reading some threads on here and am now fretting that we should be formulating a plan for PR right now? Does anyone know the best route to PR for an emergency doctor? Do you always need an employer to sponsor you? Thanks
