Im not in NI, so I can’t speak to their system. I can see that my interpretation of means tested is different from others. Here’s the Cambridge dictionary and UK m, definition of it: https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/dictionary.cambridge.org/amp/english/means-testing Its similar in Aus for health. You pay a tax or have private insurance, but you do not get turned away from accessing public health just because you can afford to go private. As per the definition, means testing is a gate keeping system to ascertain if you qualify for a government benefit. Ergo, since we all qualify irrespective of income, it is not means tested at present, in the truest sense of the measure.

I guess we will leave it at that, as I stated before, I see it as a tax, at earning thresholds.

Which all equates to, its not means tested, else a millionaire presumably wouldn’t be eligible for public healthcare either in the UK or Australia. Since that’s not the case, it actually isn’t. Personally, I think means testing would be a hard sell to an electorate any where (unless one is in the US, where they hate having a public system). Simply because its an ideological position as opposed to a practical one (just the other end of the ideological spectrum, ie, its not a Tory ideology but its a pure communist one). A public subsidy or (like prescription), is one such option.

I’d say you are spot on. It makes me think even more that the Murdoch media is doing so for leas than ‘public interest’ reasons, but more to force a return to the ‘status quo’, that means they can enjoy more profit.

I think (hope), it will - but you and I may disagree on the means
  6. Im tempted to make a lengthy comment on this, but having got up to speed on the reasons etc. all I can say is ‘Oh, the irony of it all’.

I know. And the fact that people are dipping into their pockets and doing so is a soft people power damning indictment on 10 years of Austerity policy. Having said that, just relying on the state to find ever bigger and bigger budgets for the NHS via taxes is not realistic, simply because there are more of us getting older and older, and also wanting to keep indulgent lifestyles. Or just abusing the system - making appointments, then not turning up, etc. So as NJ postulated, a hybrid like in Aus where care is still free at the point of access/consumption continues but there is further personal contribution/subsidy from the public, is warranted. Alternatively they could just charge higher taxes

    Corona Virus

There is veracity in the Sunday Times article and it is well reported. Yet I don’t think the Murdoch media is reporting it because they felt they had a duty of care to do so - more I think to do with the Government not doing their bidding and stifling commercial and economic growth, which is a threat to their bottom line. Here in Aus, a lot of local papers owned by the Murdoch media have had to close - so a loss of profit and revenue, affecting the Murdoch bottom line. So how has the Murdoch media reacted to that, over here? Doubling down on some of the Sky News Aus ‘pundits’, calling the Governments actions an over reaction and agitating (or trying to agitate), to have restrictions curbed or lifted. I agree there should be a global review, once things are under control, but all Governments should participate, be open about their mistakes and learn from them, and share what went well and what didnt go so well, so that global responses will improve. Because there sure as hel* will be a ‘next time’. Clearly, there are some world leaders across the spectrum of politics, around the globe who will sabotage that approach. So we stand to learn nothing, of any real value and use.

    Corona Virus

It is a worry, and that thought struck me quite some time ago. A vaccine may not be the silver bullet we hope it is, and like AIDs, management drugs/therapies may be all that is possible. Till either of those become reality, at some point some of us may catch this thing, inadvertently pass it on to others etc. as a balance does get struck between keeping safe and keeping the economies and livelihoods going. I have an elderly parent who is vulnerable, and abroad and it is a constant and daily worry that she may not come out the other dnd of this, the longer things carry on.

The same. In fact, there have been others, all ages, genders, abilities, poor and wealthy now doing their bit - I know, because it gets reported. So, thinking there is exceptional jingoism going on, because some people are doing what they can, as individuals or groups, and criticising reporting of it still strikes me as strange

Well it might do to you, but the Government doesn’t think so. Its not compulsory, to get pvt medical insurance. I have, my partner hasn’t. I use my insurance mainly for dental and optical, i haven’t had to use it for anything else - tests, surgery, meds etc, not at all. Also no one pressures anyone to do so (especially if the condition is not covered). Same for my partner, all care not on medical insurance. However if you decide not to get pvt insurance, you pay a further tax, to compensate at year end. As for the levy, that’s just another tax, you fall into existing tax brackets/salary thresholds and pay the levy accordingly. No one looks at your ‘assets’ including non-liquid and then decides what you are entitled to for healthcare, which they do do, when it comes to pension provision, and enforce it (ie: pensions are means tested and enforced, healthcare is more to do with supplementing and taxation).

Pension perhaps. Health, no. Its not means tested here either (health). Not in NSW anyway.

I’ll add that to the list of crackpot conspiracies alongside Area 51. 99 year old man raising money for the NHS is a well meaning exceptional jingoist

I don’t see someone raising money for the NHS, and just getting on with it, putting aside politics and politicking especially at his frail age as anything other than exceptional and it’s certainly not an act of jingoism at all. Most venal and strange that anyone would see it as such.

The Sunday Times article today, is pretty damning of the Government’s neglect of the NHS. It’s a fact based article that shows the level of unpreparedness that was. As we know the people largely agree. So if i were you, I wouldn’t juxtapose people’s reverence, awe, value respect and willingness to put their hands in their pockets for the NHS in spite of the Government as letting it ‘off the hook’. Frankly, this means in future that people may be happy to pay to subsidise it similar to how they part pay for prescriptions.

How is Trump doing so far?

its classic Trump - I don’t take responsibility for anything. But clearly the crazies who support him there will rally, armed to the teeth no doubt. I saw some of the footage of the protests - ideologically driven, pitting the state against Trump. The only thought that went through my head, is country is a basket case, not a leading light.

Imagine that. Im sure someone will be along to day its a cover up. The exact same mistake corrected, if done by the likes of us - would be a mistake (still need to ask why, though) The mythical bogey-man makes the same mistake - its a sinister plot/cover up.

Their economy had negative growth and tanked last quarter. What an own goal with reference to ‘world domination/lets sock it to the US’ conspiracies, if some of the postulations on this thread are to be believed.

Yes, he is amazing. A sage and sensible man - focusing on the here and now and what can be done, practically to move things forward for the NHS - nor a conspiracy or blame game in sight. Be like Tom, or better yet, here is his twitter page, with the justgiving donation page info, if you want to donate or leave him a kind word.

Can’t be found. Why? Because its a made up fiction that doesn’t exist. I have Sky UK 24/7 no ‘the top virologist’ in sight. I look forward to the next conspiracy instalment - to come out of this thread - we have to keep amused and occupied, somehow, and this right here is sterling work. Services to comedy.

So now, the Chinese, WHO and Germans are spearheading the conspiracy juggernaut. Amazing. It’ll be the Muslims next. No wait! That’s already been postulated, read the FT article I posted for ‘Indian’ conspiracy musings (with a very sinister outcome over there, sadly). Is this a ‘royal flush’? No! It will be complete when the Nevada Area 51 aliens join the fray - It’s the virus from outer space! Get this, the Chinese, WHO, Germans and Muslims secretly stole an Alien/secretly injected the Area 51 aliens (you choose which damning, treacherous dastardly deed was used), and *somehow* started the spread in China. Yeah man! Those bogey-men and aliens - a lethal combination, all to bring the US down.

Which Sky Uk broadcast is this? I get Sky UK here, and cant recall seeing a ‘top vitoligist’ with reference to point 1. Video clip please. As for point 2 - imagine that, Chinese tourists travel, and our let in to the destination country, by the border control of the destination county - blow me down with a feather.

Not on ours, or the US’s purse they wont. Especially in these extraordinary times.
