    Work visas / permanent residency

My one tip would be to make sure the qualification you get and the job you have in the UK is something you really want to do. It may take 5 or 6 years to get the required experience, as you suggested, but who knows what the visa requirements will be at that time and what jobs are on the skills list. You may end up training in something that can't get you to Australia, so you need to make sure you're happy doing what you're doing in case it turns out that you'll be having a career in the UK after all.

    Coronavirus and Temporary Visa holders

Hi Paul, There doesn't seem to be any specific advice for 489 visa holders yet. I know we're classed as temporary but all the previously released government information about temporary skilled visas appears to be aimed towards those with employer sponsorship and what happens if you lose your job. If we lose our jobs, there are no clauses about leaving the country if we can't find another one. The main downside, besides the lack of money, will be that it will potentially take longer to get the one year of full-time working requirement in order to apply for the 887. Do you expect there to be any official guidance around 489s or are we just in the "get out and go home" category if we lose our jobs? Thanks!

    Impact of Covid-19 on Points

Australia can't look after the existing people here so I can only imagine they would massively reduce immigration. If you're low on points at the moment, I would be very sceptical of any good news coming your way. Just my opinion of course, but at the moment COVID is making Australia treat temporary visa holders as worthless. Temporary visa holders cannot get state assistance (yet) as all the measures they've announced are for citizens and permanent holders only (plus a few special categories). The Morrison government appears to be trying to make temp visa holders go home as much as possible.

    Adelaide Suburb Maps

Hi guys. My wife and I are hoping to be granted a 489 in the coming months and will be moving to Adelaide. In order to help figure out where we want to live, I've been making some maps of the Adelaide inner suburbs based on things like their Homely rating, distance to shopping malls, cinemas, supermarkets, etc, so I'd like to share them here in case anyone else can find a benefit. They are designed as 'heat maps', so they don't go into detail about each location but are designed to give a good overview, so you can tell the distance to certain amenities from the suburbs you are considering. The maps are high resolution so you can zoom in and see street names and things and I've done quite a large number of suburbs, although I obviously had to stop somewhere, so apologies if the place you're looking at isn't covered. In this thread, I'm posting the 4 I've made so far but will add any more if I make them. 1 - Homely Ratings - Taken from Homely.com.au based on their suburb ratings out of 10 2 - Supermarkets - I've gone for Coles and Woolworths, as they're usually the biggest. I haven't included Foodland, IGA and other brands as sometimes they're a lot smaller and I wasn't able to fully research their sizes. 3 - Shopping malls/streets - Any decently sized shopping centre and a selection of streets that have a load of shops too. 4 - Cinemas/Theatres - I think I have them all covered that appeared in a few google map searches but some smaller or independent ones might have been missed Click on each image below to load of the high-res version - If you have any suggestions or comments at all, I'd love to hear them This post has been promoted to an article

Can anyone help reduce my stress!

They may have automatic cut-off in place for certain professions, so it may be that you took the last available place and once your application went through, their system automatically updated the conditions to not available for high points. Just a guess but it makes sense they'd have automatic caps so they didn't get loads of people applying for something they didn't have space for. As CivCdn says, I think you're fine. Got in just in time.

    Ukulele

Hi everyone! Been following and posting under the visa categories for so long now but now we've finally got them, we can properly start planning the rest of the move! Does any know - would a shop-bought ukulele need any kind of treatment or is it considered fine because it's not made of reclaimed wood or anything like that? Trying to figure out what wood objects we can take and what we should try and sell/send to a charity shop. Many thanks in anticipation Jon

High Points for 489/190 - South Australia

We got them done mid-December as well. Didn't want to worry about CO contact so got everything front loaded. Bit of a risk but very happy with how it has turned out.

    Visa 489 for SA

Yes, you're absolutely right about the visa terms being for any regional area. However the State that sponsors you will have their own terms that you have to fulfill. If you apply for SA sponsorship, they would only accept you if they believed you planned to live in SA and contribute to the SA economy. If you said you were planning on moving to Geelong, they simply wouldn't sponsor you so you wouldn't be able to apply for the visa. However, if you lied on the application and claimed to want to live in SA but then moved to Geelong after the visa grant, the Aus government could cancel your visa and you'd be heading home. You might get lucky, but they have every right to do that.

    Visa 489 for SA

I'm no expert but what your agent is suggesting could get your visa refused in the first instance or cancelled if you get it granted. To be nominated by a state is to commit to living in that state. You would have to lie in your state application to SA as part of your statement as to why they should sponsor you. Also, for the 489, you need 2 years living in the regional area, not 1. It's 1 year of work completed but you can't apply for 887 until you've completed 2 years in the state. Happy for anyone to improve upon my response though.

    Visa 489 South Australia

Hi Ravimodiz, Some people will get their visa a few days after submitting the required documents. Some people submitted documents months ago and have still not heard. Some people submitted documents and then get further CO contact for more documents. There is unfortunately no way to know how long it will take after you upload them. As long as you do everything as quickly and accurately as you can, then you're putting yourself in the best position. Jon

    65 points for 190 any point? /489

Hi Squiggle. Do you definitely mean 489, as you don't need a job offer for that visa? You do need an invitation from a sponsoring state or territory, though, same as a 190. The 489 and 190 have similarities but the 190 is a permanent visa, whereas the 489 is provisional, so you'd still have to apply for a permanent visa down the line. On the flip side, you get 5 points for a 190 but 10 points for a 489. Neither of these visa require a job offer. Having a job ready for you would be nice, but it wouldn't stop you getting the visa if you didn't have a job offer. My wife has applied for a 489 and we're waiting for the visa now after being sponsored by SA, but we don't have jobs lined up. I'd just take a look at the different states and territories and if the 263111 is on any of their lists. It's on the MLTSSL, which is a plus! Hope this helps.

    Front loading visa application

That was exactly my viewpoint too. Seems illogical for a CO to check if everything is there, only not to give a DG there and then, but come back to it later and give it out afterwards. Just adding to their timescale stats unnecessarily.

    Front loading visa application

Interesting thanks! My agent was happy with front loading so obviously wasn't worried at all. Fingers crossed for no strikes ha ha

    Front loading visa application

While I absolutely don't doubt your credentials, I'm surprised to hear that you don't see it speeding up the process. If you wait for CO contact before doing the medicals and police checks, then you might be waiting months for contact, only to be put back at the bottom of the queue and then waiting months again for that CO to check the extra evidence you've supplied. You might get lucky and they spot your upload quickly but I've seen loads of people who have had contact for medicals and Police checks and are still waiting months later. If you front load, you might get a direct grant the first time to CO checks your application. It's not guaranteed that front loading will get a DG, but if you don't then a DG is impossible. Yes it's a risk regarding first entry, but getting a direct grant definitely speeds up the visa process compared to guaranteed CO contact and then waiting for your documents to be picked up again. Surely?
