Yes most of my friends at the least 3 of them took their families for a short week or less than a week trip just to activate the visa. You are right, that not everybody can pre plan migration in such short time frame. I have never heard of extensions though

Afaik. For one eoi you can get max 2 invitations valid 60 days each.

How about some coaching classes? Thats the norm for non native english speakers like us. I got lot of tips from a podcast i listened to during preparation.

I had mine in april 2014. Stay completely focussed on listening test. most tricky of all
