If this was true then why do universities offer branched nursing? Adults and children suffer from different conditions and their bodies work differently therefore being general trained is not going to benefit me. Had I done general training first it would have taken 3 years then 18 months to train in paediatrics. I did 3 years of paediatrics, surely that makes me better qualified to work with children?

You don't need to be general trained in the UK. If you know you don't want to work with adults it seems silly to train general then an extra 18 months for Paeds.

No. I am purely paediatric trained, a lot of other uk nurses trying to come here will be in the same position.

Hi, I'm Sophie, I moved to Sydney from England in June 2014. I'm a degree qualified paediatric nurse with 18 months experience. I applied for my AHPRA registration in April 2014. My application has still not been granted. Without being a negative joy-kill I just felt that it was important that I pointed out the realistic situation in Australia (particularly Sydney) for paediatric nurses. Not only has it been 8 months since I applied for registration but it is also clear there are zero jobs out here for paediatric nurses despite there being 2 paediatric hospitals. When I decided to move here everyone said 'oh, you'll get a job no problem!' 'they're screaming out for nurses!' Its not correct. I live in inner Sydney and there are currently no vacancies for paediatric nurses. I just want those paeds nurses out there to be aware of the current job situation & not to come over here expecting to fall into a job. I just wish someone had told me this before I had come out as I'm struggling to find even non-nursing work because my qualifications are so specific. Sophie

Hi, I moved to Sydney in June 2014, I applied for AHPRA in April and it has still not come through. I have decided to move back to England in June 2015. I am thinking about cancelling my AHPRA registration application. Does anyone know if I will be reimbursed any of my application fee? Many thanks Sophie

I have been in Sydney for almost 12 weeks. I applied for registration with AHPRA in March/April and it still hasn't come through. I wish this was my biggest concern but as a paediatric nurse it seems there aren't that many jobs out there. Sophie

Hi all, I am a paediatric nurse in the UK, my partner and I are moving to Sydney at the end of June. I think it is unlikely my nursing registration will have gone through by then and I won't have a job lined up so I was wondering if anyone could recommend any jobs that I would be able to get quickly to tide me over until I find a nursing post. Hi, My partner and I will be renting an apartment in Sydney when we move over in July. I read somewhere that it is a good idea to get the apartment fumigated prior to moving in to reduce the chances of creepy crawlies entering the apartment? Is this true? There is is a children's hospital in westmead, that is why is was one of my options for employment. Thank you you for listing other big hospitals around the city, that will be really helpful as I'm sure they will have at least 1 paediatric ward. Id definitely want to be near the water if possible. My partner said I was dreaming but after all of your replies I am still hopeful!

I'd recommend starting to look at AHPRA registration as it's a bit of a minefield. Lots of documents and information to gather and as I found it takes longer than expected to get in contact with everyone to get what you need. I'm just applying for my registration now.

He will be working near to Circular Quay & I am a paediatric nurse hoping to get a job in a children's hospital either in Westmead or Randwick. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on nice areas to live with good transport links for both of us? Our budget will be around $650 per week. Is it likely that we will be able to find a nice apartment for that amount? Really appreciate your opinions/help. Sophie

Thanks for your reply. It's not something I had thought about as we are only planning on staying for around 2 years. As I mentioned before, I'm worried I won't be able to find sponsorship so I was thinking along the lines of WHV but then I'm not familiar with the process of changing that to a different visa so I can stay longer. Feeling very confused!!

Hi, My partner and I are starting the process of moving to Australia. We are both 23. I am a paediatric nurse and he works in finance. We want to move to Australia for 2 years. My understanding is that if I can get sponsored by an employer on the 457 visa my partner can come on my visa too. Are there any other options? Hi, I'm a paediatric nurse currently living in the UK. My partner and I have decided we want to relocate to Australia, either Sydney or Melbourne. I have been searching what feels like endless websites trying to find out the process I need to go through to get a job in Australia. It would be really really helpful if someone who understands the process or who has been through it themselves could explain it to me.
