  1. Hi, We have just arrived in oz on a 189 visa. We havnt got jobs yet. I have heard we can get medicare straight away. So planning on getting it sorted. After doing a bit of research I'm just wondering if anyone has done this recently? We applied for tax numbers last night so waiting on them to arrive. Can we get medicare sorted without these numbers? Is there any other documents that we need to bring to the centrelink? Thanks in advance Joanne
  2. Thanks again for all the help and advice. We have now landed and are looking forward to our new adventure
  3. Thanks guys for your replys. I will def look at getting private insurance. I will maybe see if I can do that from the UK before we go. It's a permanent move so no companies would insure us in australia under holiday insurance . The best we could get was from when we leave the UK until we land. Even an extra few days would have given me time to get things in place. As far as im aware we are eligible for medicare. I just don't no how long it will take to get it all set up. Cheers guys and I will look at the possibility of getting bupa set up from outside australia. Joanne
  4. Hi everyone, I just have a question about health insurance if anyone could answer. We are moving from the UK to australia on Thursday . We were able to get insurance that covers us from when we leave the UK until we arrive, but that's it. Only covers the journey. No company would give us holiday insurance as it's not a holiday. What happens if we need medical help after we arrive? I will look into getting private medical cover but it will prob take at least a few days to get something in place. I'm panicking a little. We are traveling on a 189 PR visa. I have a child with severe allergies and it's a little stressful not having everything in place before hand. Any advice appreciated Thanks Joanne
  5. Hi Lin, thanks again for getting back to me, sorry only replying now, we were changing our phone line provider and lost our internet for a few days. I will look into getting my degree assessed. I did a multidisciplinary biomedical science degree at the uni of ulster and also did the msc at ulster to, the online one so probably the same one as you. Hopefully it will help a bit. Whats the job situation like at the moment over there for our kind of work? Is there plenty of jobs? My husband is very concerned about giving up two good jobs here incase we didn't get work over there, can I apply for jobs over here and get sponsorship or would I have to take the leap and just hope I can get a lab job when I get over ther? We would feel a bit more at ease if one job was guaranteed. Think we are planning on coming over for a holiday maybe next year to get the feel of things and see what we think. I hope your enjoying your stay back in the uk, and thanks again for taking the time to email me! Its definitely reassuring to know you have done it and been very successful! Take care Joanne
  6. Congratulations for getting to where you are now! You must be so proud! Thank you so much for replying to me! I have plenty of questions, haha, hope you don't mind me asking. Did you submit information regarding your degree to AIMS and then they got back to you saying you didn't have to sit their multi disciplinary exam but you had to sit the IELTS? Is that how it works? I did read up that if I was a fellow of the IBMS I wouldn't have to sit the exam but I'm not a fellow . When AIMS were finally satisfied did you find it hard to find a job? Did it take long? What is the situation like over there now job wise? I have a decent job here, grade 1 biomedical scientist, but it's my dream to live and work in australia. I have heard it is expensive to rent property and the cost of living is quite high so I'm realistic enough to know we really couldn't afford to stay long if I was out of work over there for an extended period of time. Whats the chance i could have a job secured before I went over? Or would I just have to move over and hand my CV around some recruitment companies? I have looked and laboratory scientist is on the wanted skills list so I may be able to get a visa. I have been onto some recruitment websites and there does seem to be some jobs available. My husband works in I.T and he to will be looking for work. His current employer is only UK based so he doesn't have the possibility of a transfer. We are both pretty much starting over from scratch, which is very daunting when we would both be giving up two good jobs over here. How are you enjoying life over there? I thank you again for getting back to me, has given me a little bit of hope knowing someone has managed to do it! Joanne
  7. Hi, I know this is an older post but I was just wondering if you got sorted with becoming a biomedical scientist in australia. I'm in the uk working as a biomedical scientist in blood transfusion and I am looking into the possibility of moving to Australia. I hope you don't mind me asking you some questions. Did you have to sit the AIMS exam? I was reading up about it and it looks quite difficult as I only have a transfusion background. What are the job prospects out there? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I hope you got sorted over there and it's everything you wished it would be!
  8. Thanks very much for replying! I will have a look at those sites. Yea my job is on the occupation list so thats a start anyway! Fingers crossed! Thanks
  9. Hi guys, i just wanted a little bit of advice about moving career to australia. I currently work in the uk as a biomedical scientist registered with the hpc. I've been reading up on it and think I have to sit the AIMS exam. Has anyone any experience doing this exam or any advice they could offer? I work in blood transfusion and the exam is multi disiplinary and there are sections I wouldn't know much about. Would I have to sit this exam in order to get a job or could I work without it? What are the job prospects in australia? Would it be difficult to get a job in this field? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance! Joanne
