  1. Hi All, there seem to be so many posts not sure what one's most popular! I moved to Sydney (city) 8 months ago and although I'm loving it, missing the girlie nights out and need to start making an effort to make more friends! I'm from Cardiff and moved here with the BF; we are both 31yrs. We are hoping to relocate to Bondi soon. I'm on FB - Cari Rees. x
  2. Hi girls, i am 30 yrs, moving to potts point in three weeks. Aiming to move to Manly then. Please PM me if anyone's in a similar situation and wants to meet up! I will be Billy no mates when I get over there. I will be with my boyfriend but excited to make new friends! Love the beach, adventures, pubs, picnics, food, the usual!!!!! c x
  3. Apologies, just read your post again, and have seen you are still on your masters degree. I hate to say it but think you would need sufficient post qualifying experiencing in the UK before you can get your skills assessed as a social worker in oz. hmmm....I would definitely email AASW to see if they can offer any other suggestions.
  4. Hi, I completed the masters and am 4 years post qualified, also working in aged care. I sent my application to AASW today actually for my qualifications to be assessed. I believe this is what you will need to do to even to have a chance of getting work over in oz as a social worker. Although social work is not a registered profession, all the jobs I have seen state 'must be eligible for registration with AASW', and you won't be eligible for registration without having your skills assessed by AASW. This costs €850 plus additional fees like fast tracking, assessing for skilled visa migration etc . I had to evidence my post qualifying experience in the form of payslips. How many years post qualified are you? Think your masters placements will count ?? It may be worth emailing the AASW , they get back to you really quick ..I asked question after question!!!! Hope that helps. X
  5. Hi all, i am heading to sydney on a WHV in April. I hope to apply onshore for 189 visa. Although my partners boss has offered to sponser him/ us ( me as a defacto) in oz, I think we will have more freedom both being on my skilled visa/ him down as a defacto applicant. I am still at the very early stages of having my skills assessed (just waiting to get certified copies and then I can post the documents!). I am aiming to scan all the certified copies, coloured originals certificates so I've everything on my computer for when I can apply for visa 189.......just wondering, is it best to get police / med checks in oz rather than in UK. I have heard that many firms in the uk want to know your visa number etc before you have the checks....and obviously this is something I don't have yet as trying to forward plan. can anyone see any problems with this plan in applying for 189 onshore? I have read that the conditions of the WHV ( 1 employer for 6 month period) will be wavered as soon as my 189 application is being processed?????????? Would be good to hear stories of those people applying for 189 onshore xxx
  6. That's exactly what i was looking for - thanks for the link and your help! Xx
  7. Hi all, i have been searching the Internet for days now but still can't find any confirmation.......hoping PIO can help!! Regarding the 189 skilled independent visa, is it only the main applicant who needs the police and medical checks, or would this apply for the defacto partner on the application too? Also, if the application is made onshore, is it fairly simple to get medical / police checks in oz once instructed to? Thank you :dull:
  8. Hi girlies, i just replied to Carly's original thread on a different page but didn't see your replies. I'm moving over to potts point April 3rd so put my name down for any meet ups around this date! I will be out of work until I secure a job so will have plenty of time on my hands! Up for the beach, drinks, tea and cake, whatever really! Caz x
  9. Hi Carly, just wondering if you had any luck meeting new peeps? My partner is out in potts point at the moment. I'm due to come out 3rd April, flights are booked, so am eager to make friends too. Don't know anyone apart from my boyfriend! He's a social butterfly and has already met a load of his mates in manly, so would be up for meeting when I arrive in April. Know this is a fair way off tho! We are hoping to move to manly in may. Caz
  10. well, I'm due to go out in April and my partner is over there already. We really wanted a rental in manly but that's very popular area and proving quite difficult to secure a tenancy.hes secured a rental now, but not in manly and not very near a beach!! grrr....Unless you have a lot of time to spend on viewing properties it can become quite a battle! U need ALOT of info when renting,it's almost like a job interview?! IRoughly speaking for a one bedroom flat you'd be looking at $500 plus a week for a one bedroom furnished flat. More flats seem to be advertised on the websites to rent now that its approaching winter I think? Good luck
  11. Thanks egrek!! I'm a little calmer about the whole situation now! Thanks all for your honest words! Can't wait now x
  12. Sound beautiful!! You are the other side of australia! i Know i will LOVE the outdoor lifestyle, weather, etc. I will have to look for a job when I get there, (hospital social worker), that will be the only tricky thing. I hope to find a job in three months! Whether that is too optimistic?! Yes, the UK has been cold. luckily i was in AUstralia holidaying for dec/ jan so that helped! I am leaving beginning of April if all goes well! Counting down the days, hate the thought of my boyfriend over there on his own in the meantime, I'm sure he is coping though!!!! Xx
  13. Thanks all for your responses. Really helps! Like you say, as long as we have got the right visas in situ for entry all should be ok. Which we have! My fella has already left, so I'm now counting down the days till I join him. .....think I've been watching too many episodes of 'Border security'' on tv which made me analyse everything!? Haha! Thanks again xxxxx. Xenemonie- hope u are still enjoying oz after two years! Think we will be staying in Potts point now, just hope it is a nice friendly place! We really wanted manly but it's just too much of a nightmare securing a flat over there, think its where everyone wants to live! Xx
  14. Hi all, i want to ask advice really, apologies if it seems silly......me and the boyfriend have got our WHV granted and he's going over next week whilst I have to save some money, and hoping to go out in two months time. He has a job lined up with a possibility of employer sponsership after 3 months, and I can apply as defacto on that visa application. If immigration asked what are our intentions on our WHV, are we 'allowed' to say we plan to stay long term over there and apply for employer sponsership? Or is this not what they want to hear? Do they want to hear that we are travelling and intend to come back after a year? We will b based in sydney and won't be travelling that far around oz? Only on the weekends really. Just getting a bit scared now as we are both packing in our good jobs and am worried we will fail at the first hurdle! Any advice would help ! Thanks x
  15. Hi aymie, thanks for the reply. Sounds positive; I have looked on a few hospital websites and seen a few jobs which I would be interested in. I suppose it all comes down to the visa really. Plus I will need to register with aasw to speed things up. I know a few posts have said there may be no need to actually pay the fees and checks for aasw approval, just ensure that you are eligible for aasw approval, but I think it's more of a formal route and will look better for my cv. Thanks again.
