  1. Hi all, I was wondering if I could pick the brains of you wonderful people. I am a mental health nursing student who will qualify this year and aim to apply to live in Australia (particularly Victoria as we gave it a test drive on honeymoon last month, but I'll go anywhere they'll have me really!) with my wife. I was wondering if someone could maybe give me the run down of what to do first. I know I need to register with AHPRA but can I apply to do this shortly before qualifying in the UK as I can then perhaps cut short my waiting time. I was also wondering at what point can I apply for jobs. How much experience is necessary? I was reading others have said that graduate programmes are very hard to come by and my chances of obtaining one of these are slim, however is it worth applying anyway? If so, how do I go about it? If a job position required experience could I apply on the basis of getting the experience while I go through the process? My wife is a qualified teaching assistant in the UK however I have been told that her qualification does not equate in Aus, so is there alternative qualifications she could take if we are granted a visa and how much do these cost? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just home from honeymoon and so desperate to get back! Thanks in advance Nick
  2. Hi Jac, I'm sorry to jump on the thread but I was wondering if I could get some info from you. I am due to qualify this year as a Mental Health Nurse and basically want to go out to Aus ASAP. Myself and my wife just went out there to try it for honeymoon last month to see if it's what we want to do and basically fell in love with the place! I was wondering if you had the choice of where you went? Where it was you found employment? Did you have any post qualification experience before applying or can you apply and work while the process is ongoing so you have experience by the time you get there? Myself and my wife like the look of Melbourne, but to be honest we would go anywhere! Her dad has been in Sydney now for 10+ years after emigrating from the UK so he has been very positive about Nursing in Aus. Sorry for all the questions but I seem to have only found negative information online and yours is one of the few positives I've seen since I see you fly out this year! You must be so excited! Thanks in advance Nick
  3. Hello all, i've been trying to understand the new rules with regard to emigration fees etc. Firstly am I right in saying myself and my partner will now need separate visas? I saw that online people are now paying double where they were before. I will qualify in mental health nursing and my partner as a teaching assistant in 2 years. I am trying to get a figure of how much everything will cost to move myself and my partner and our 2 cats. we won't be looking to ship anything over and looking just to rent initially until we can apply for a mortgage. Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost (the minimum) and how things like employer sponsorship would work? I've heard a qualified nurse can sometimes get sponsored migration, though i'm unsure as to what this involves. thanks for your help Nick
  4. Myself and my girlfriend are looking to move out there when I qualify as a Mental Health Nurse so we read as much as we can on the subject. It seems to me that either they haven't done their homework at all or were exaggerating. Also the 'Juice' reason was actuall laughable. What a joke. Typical of the Daily Mail. I wouldn't even use it as toilet roll....
  5. Thanks for the reply Oh sorry haha. Her dad is in NSW currently. Both of us aren't confident driving so I'd be worried about learning. I'd really like to though...
  6. Hi all, Myself and my fiancee are hoping to emigrate soon. As a mental health nurse I would hope to find work in Oz (not really a preference where). Neither of us drive. We spoke to my fiancees father, who resides over there currently and he had said we need to learn to drive. Is this true of all places? I assumed it would for community work but would finding work / accommodation near to a hospital be difficult / expensive? Thanks Nick
