  1. Hi all, I had my 457 granted back in November and will be heading to Oz in a couple of weeks. I had to submit a lot of supporting documentation but was never asked to provide evidence of adequate private health insurance. I was just reading the details on the visa and noticed it says "Condition - 8501 The visa holder must maintain adequate arrangements for health insurance during their stay in Australia". I am from Ireland and understand we have a reciprocal health agreement but that i will have to register with Medicare... but do I need to take out insurance as well and if so before I arrive or is it something I can do when I get there? thanks dave
  2. This has been confusing me no end as well - Medicare is sufficient for the 457 visa but only if you are enrolled with Medicare and have a Medicare card, correct? But the RHCA that Ireland has with Australia does not entitle Irish citizens to enrol in Medicare nor do we get a Medicare card. We seem to have a similar level of cover as someone who is though but we just present our passport. I really wish someone could clear this up! I emailed Medicare asking for clarification - no reply yet. If I hear anything back I'll post it here.
  3. Hi GilraenH! Thanks for that - actually had a look the tax website earlier but I'm just getting more and more confused lol I figure I'll be paying foreign resident tax at 32.5c on the dollar - would this be right? Are there any other salary deductions I can expect? Am I exempt from the medicare levy?
  4. Hi all, I've been reading through lots of threads on here but can't seem to find what I'm looking for! I've been offered a position as a registered nurse in the Emergency Department of Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth. Just wondering if anyone else on here has worked there? I'm really interested to hear what it's like, what the usual shift patterns are, etc. A more general question is about salary expectations. I will be employed at level 1.8 (€73,187 base) and I know there are premiums (or penalties as they are known there!) on top of this depending on hours worked. Realistically, what kind of money will I be taking home? What kind of tax, levies, etc. can I expect to pay? Don't get me wrong - it's not all about the money - I'm paying a mortgage here in Ireland and will continue to be doing so while I'm working in Oz and just want to get a realistic idea of my financial situation before I move to the other side of the world! Thanks for taking the time to read my post! Cheers Dave
