  1. " In reality we found it very quiet and very residential and also quite down market. Green square was just OK in my opinion and the Kingston Plaza looked like a post-apocalyptic shopping centre" hehehe, that did indeed make me giggle Welcome to Canberra, ManboobsGalore! Hope you are your partner are soaking up the sun. I know I've said this before in reply to the other thread you've started, but have you considered civic/newacton/braddon/ and the braddon-turner area? While Kingston and Manuka (and Forrest) are lovely, my personal feeling was that it lacked the buzz I was looking for and was far too salubrious for my debauched London tastes I also found the north younger with many more people like myself who are in their 30s and without kids. Also, if you fancy a chat over a pint or three, give us a shout
  2. People are indeed biased, for example I think city/new acton where my partner and I live is the bees knees! lol. That said, we would love to meet you Steve for drinks sometime and pop across to the South.
  3. And I forgot to add, Bazinga is right, do stay away from the top end of Northbourne. Not very nice at all!
  4. Hi again! The property was being marketed as a two bed (and if London standards are anything to go by, it was a two bed! hehehe) and while the living space was really nice and plush, the second bedroom was distinctly odd. A tiny little window with glorious views of the construction site ;-) My feeling is that numbers 11 and 17 of Trevillian quay all have small 2 bedrooms flats, and should really be called 2 bed plus study. However I could be wrong as I only saw two apartments in the complex. BTW, we seem to be interested in the same complexes! My partner and I saw a really nice apartment at the Avenue last month (Moore St entrance). Wonderful views of the Black Mountain tower. Only hitch? A small second bedroom and smaller than Trevillian Quay (when we saw the property it was still furnished and we could barely open the bedroom door given the double bed !!) and oddly spaced out living area. I would say that the apartment we saw at the Avenue was 75sqm. We eventually decided upon an apartment in the city fringes/New Acton. If you are after a gym and pool, have you seen the apartments on all homes listed under City, Acton, New Acton? Most of the new builds have a gym and some have a gym and a pool. I also saw new builds in Kingston (Eyre Street), Forrest, and Braddon. The South Canberra apartments did not have a gym and a pool and the Braddon apartment only had a gym. Good luck with your search !
  5. Hi there! my partner and I recently moved to Canberra and a 2 bed apartment in Trevillian Quay was one of the first places we saw. So while the area is lovely (right next to the Old Bus Depot Markets and a short walk to Telopea Park), it is a building site and *very* loud from about 9am to 5pm (Monday through Friday). The other thing I wanted to mention is that the apartments have sizeable living areas but the bedrooms are small, and you can barely manage to fit in a double bed and a desk in the second/guest bedroom. I inspected the apartment on a Saturday and there was some building work going on, the noise was truly a deal breaker. Also, if like myself you don't drive, it is a 10 minute walk to the bus stops. This isn't very long at all but the street lighting is poor so come winter it'll be quite an ask! BTW, I was able to negotiate on the rental price for where I live now (in the city). I put in a really cheeky offer which the landlord rejected but he came back with a price that was $20 less (per week) than the asking price.
  6. Hi Mark and Michael, I am sorry we missed this! We've just moved (3 weeks now !) and were looking to meet new people over a pint or two. Ben and I would love to come to the next Mooseheads meet-up All the best, Trisha
  7. Thank you all, I am so very grateful for the replies. Martin- Thanks for the reply. Incidentally, the hubby is a civil servant! So I know what you mean about the '9 to 5' culture. Stephen- thanks for the public transport tips, I don't drive (it is on my 'must learn' list) because frankly never really needed to in London. Good to know that the South is well served by buses. Could I bring my cycle over and bike around, is it a bike friendly city? We've given ourselves a month to get a feel of the city before deciding on where to rent but yes, Kingston, Manuka, O'connor, Dickson and Civic are all on my list. Someone suggested Braddon and Ainslie, would you recommend these areas? Thank you all once again, I feel so reassured
  8. Thank you so much, Mark and Michael. Do Kingston and Manuka have good public transport? Someone mentioned that we should stick to the inner north if we want reliable buses. Is that true??
  9. Hi all, I posted this in the renting forum but someone said, I should repost: My husband and I are moving to Canberra in October this year. We are really excited and incredibly happy about the move but as Londoners (essentially big city kids :biglaugh:) we are somewhat daunted about moving to a smaller city that we know very little about. My husband and I are in our early 30s, without kids, and are looking to rent in areas which are close to the centre (inner north or inner south), multicultural (Ben's Danish and I am Indian), close to bars/pubs/cafes ( it'd be nice to have our own 'local' and meet new people for a drink after work), and we'd love to have a home in a more salubrious part of town. I suppose we just want a nice apartment in a nice area where we can make new friends, something that'll remind us of the big smoke. Good public transport would be a plus! Can you all recommend where we should be looking for homes? Many thanks to all! Trisha
  10. Thank you Sunniecat:biggrin: Yep, will post in the ACT forum as well.
  11. Hi all, My husband and I are moving to Canberra in October this year. We are really excited about the move but as Londoners ( essentially big city kids  ) we are somewhat daunted about moving to a smaller city that we know next to nothing about. My husband and I are in our 30s, without kids, and are looking to rent in areas of Canberra which are close to the centre ( inner north or inner south), multicultural (Ben's Danish and I am Indian), close to bars/pubs ( it'd be nice to have our own 'local' and meet new people for a drink after work), and homes which are in the more salubrious part of town. But yes, we do want something central(ish). Can you all recommend where we should be looking for houses? Many thanks! Trisha
