I live in Mandurah so thought I should stick up for it! First of all though, I feel for you Mr Bug Family and I’m sorry about how unsettled you feel. We moved here 6 years ago after living in Manchester. So we were used to nightlife- and lots of it! We did find Mandurah a bit of a culture shock at first as it was pretty quiet but it it’s definitely improving. There are more cafes and bars springing up and the nightlife is a little busier after 9pm now. On a Sunday morning it is very hectic at the foreshore trying to find a place for brunch. When we feel a bit homesick, we just look at the stunning waterways ( and yes, lots of dolphins) and views and are reminded how thankful we are to be here. As for meth, it’s a problem in lots of places all over Oz. I was in the police for a long time in Manchester and I truly feel safer in Mandurah on a day to day basis. Mandurah is on the up and we can’t wait to see the improvements over the next few years.

Thanks for the update. We had our test last month and gathered we may have a long wait for the ceremony now. Luckily we have another 3 years on our RRV’S, although any travel anywhere is not looking likely for a while now but it’s no big deal on the scale of things!

Hi, we are in Perth. Recently did our test. It took 3 months from application to test date. We've no ceremony date yet but from recent experience of friends, they have had theirs approximately 3 months after the test date. Hope this helps.

Not sure if this is helps but we validated our visas and were out of Aus for 15 months after that before we made the move, so we are required to obtain them. So from this I think it is from the validation date. We didn't obtain them when we submitted our application. We've had our test today and we've been asked to now provide them. So you could submit your application and then they will request it if you need one. Our application was processed really quickly, only 3 months from submission to test date. We are in WA so I don't know if processing times are quicker here at present. Hope this may help!

If you come to WA, the cut off date for school years is 30/6. So your daughter would end up being the oldest in her year instead. She may end up repeating a bit of a year she's already done in the UK but I wouldn't worry about that. Our son did the last term of pre primary when we arrived when he'd already done a year of reception in the UK. It was better for him though as he's a June baby so now the youngest in his year. Hi, We’ve been in the Halls Head area of Mandurah for four years and it’s a lovely place.Mandurah is growing all the time and lots of new houses are being built. Dawesville is beautiful and you can get a lot for your money down there.There isn’t as much infrastructure but it’s growing all the time. It’s about a 20 min drive to Mandurah train station from Dawesville and then 50 mins to Perth. There are plenty of areas to choose from from Rockingham down to Mandurah, all reasonably priced. You may see that Rockingham and Mandurah get bad press about drug problems but it’s certainly nothing compared to what I saw in inner City Manchester. The lovely Very Stormy who regularly posts on here used to live in Dawesville and I’m sure he can tell you a lot more. As for pies, I’m the worst person to ask as I’m a vegetarian. I’ve yet to find a good cheese and onion pie though!

We’ve been here for nearly four years, I usually post on Perth Poms . It’s hubby who is a teacher. We have a child who isn’t into team sports! Unusual for Australia but there you go. yep I’m sure we will have friends in common, it seems a very linked community down here!

Hi, we live in Perth but are having an extended holiday in January to a few places. We will be in Melbourne on Australia Day. Does anyone have any suggestions of where the best place is to be on the day? We have an 8 year old but he’s not overly bothered by the standard kids activities. We haven’t booked accommodation yet so would appreciate any tips on where to stay or avoid! Thanks.

Bring everything, warm clothes are needed and they come in handy if you ever travel back to the UK, Lego is the same price here and easy to buy but it’s good to bring the kids familiar things. We had a container and after clearing all the clutter and stuff we didn’t need, we brought most things. We’ve gradually replaced some over the three years we’ve been here but we were glad we brought what we did. Think we’ve chatted before on Perth Poms, fellow teaching family here too. We are in Mandurah so will be a distance from Yanchep but let us know if you fancy a meet up when you get here.

Hi, we have been here for three years in Perth. We experienced all the feelings you have. Saying goodbye is awful and you’ll be in a confused emotional state! We were excited but also upset so it all felt a bit unreal. We felt a bit like we were in a bubble when we arrived. Just be proud of yourselves for taking the step and don’t worry if everything isn’t perfect at first. In between getting tax numbers, Medicare, cars and rentals, try to just have a few days doing enjoyable things, like a tourist would. We felt a lot better when our container arrived and we were reunited with our familiar belongings, we sent ours ahead of us too so it’s good when you don’t have too wait long. Make sure you take a photo of you all at the plane as you board, you can look back on it and be proud of what you’ve achieved. Good luck and hope it all works out for you, it’s not been easy at times for us but we never regretted it for a minute.

Hi, we are in Perth and here is the same as the above poster has stated. My hubby is a primary teacher and has never been short of relief work for the three years we’ve been here. As others have said, job advertisements don’t mean much. The best way to get a foot in the door for a teaching job is to get known at a school for relief work and then offers of contracts tend to follow. This is how my hubby got a contract in the end. It’s not what you know, it’s who you know! So if you can manage the uncertainty I’d say you’ll be fine. The pay is very good for relief too, $400 per day. Good luck!

Hi Matt. We moved over to WA 18 months ago. We are on a 190 visa. I was the same as you but didn't want to join the police here. Have a look at any jobs the government advertise for investigators. The job spec may ask for a cert IV in investigations but your uk police experience will be sufficient. I got a job for the dept of commerce, if it's the same in Victoria, look at the Dept for investigator roles in consumer protection and the building commission. Also, the dept of education standards and integrity sometimes advertise for investigator roles. i agree you may have to go the cbd for this kind of work as I did here but it may be different there. Applying for civilian jobs in the Police is pretty hard as you normally need to have citizenship for security clearance yet you can probably join as an officer just with PR! Hi. We lived near Monton. Monton is great, nice cafes bars and restaurants.If you can't afford it, Swinton is a good option, look at Broadoak Park and Hazlehurst. You could get a house there for your price range and be able to walk to Monton. Make sure you look at the Worsley side of the East Lancs as the house prices retain value there due to a good school catchment area. My sister used to live in Levenshulme and whilst it's very bustling, I'm not sure it's the best option. Didsbury and Chorlton are good but expensive, if you are looking at Burnage, try Withington too as I believe that's up and coming. Also, Prestwich is a good option. Let me know if you need any further info. I normally post on Perth Poms but hubby and I both grew up in Manchester and know the areas pretty well. We also had a trip back to,Manchester for Xmas so were able to re acquaint ourselves with it!

He's four year trained in that he has a history degree and then went on to do a one year PGCE, does that count? He does teach the PE at his school. Unfortunately the council he works for don't particpate in the teacher exhange anymore. We wouldn't give up everything without a job offer for him to go anyway as that wouldn't be realistic. I appreciate it may not be easy or happen at all. He struggled to get a teaching job in this country (when there's allegedly a shortage of teachers!) so we're not viewing it through rose tinted glasses. Thanykyou for your advice.

Hi Myself and hubby have wanted to move to Oz since visiting in 2008, we'd love to go to Melbourne. We've been slightly delayed due to the addition of our little boy. However, we now want to get the wheels in motion. Hubby is a primary school teacher. He teaches ages 10-11 back here but has taught from age 8 upwards and did teacher training with reception. Have we any chance of him passing a skills test and realistically getting a job? We did do on online assessment with a visa company (wont name and shame them), who said primary school teachers were required in Victoria and that we qualified. Luckily we didn't pay them the fee and on checking the Victoria government website, we say that it wasn't on the SOL. The visa company claimed to have made a mistake!! We are willing to go to other parts of Oz. Anyone who can offer any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for listening.
