  1. Not according to this website: https://www.457visacompared.com.au/457-visa-health-insurance/condition-8501-health-cover/medicare-surcharge-july-2014/ Can 457 Visa holders & other overseas visitors working in Australia avoid this tax? Yes, if you come from a country with a reciprocal health care agreement. I you come from one of these countries after you purchase working visa cover, you should apply for reciprocal health cover (Medicare). There is no extra charge for this and combined with private cover can help you avoid paying the tax Two more useful links: http://www.privatehealth.gov.au/healthinsurance/overseas/457visa.htm http://privatehealth.gov.au/healthinsurance/incentivessurcharges/mls.htm
  2. Thanks for that. Apparently his partner never had children so if the applicant meets the BoF then all good.
  3. Does his partner also have to meet the balance of family test?
  4. Asking for a friend. His dad is interested in moving to Australia and is eligible for the 143 visa. His dad re-married a year ago and only wants to move if he can bring his new partner along. Other than paying twice the fees, is there anything else to watch out for?
  5. If she has a UK passport then just bring her over as a visitor and apply for a 802 visa? Or if you want to do it before you come then 101 visa. https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Visa-1/802- https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Visa-1/101- Potential complication with the onshore route but people have done it before without any hassle - http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/migration-issues/155682-anyone-entered-australia-newborn-lodged-802-visa-while-onshore-we-all-have-pr175.html
  6. I know of a person who used this in a similar situation so I shared. Up to the OP to find out if it suits his scenario. PS: It is still called a declarative visa however misleading it may be
  7. Not correct. Lookup the declarative visa I mentioned. It is only issued to Australian citizens. https://www.border.gov.au/Lega/Lega/Form/Immi-FAQs/what-is-an-australian-declaratory-visa
  8. I would also look at career growth in your field. Also, all you need is 4 years(can be less if you already activated your PR) here and you get citizenship which may not mean much right away but could mean a lot if you ever want to come back.
  9. Yes, medicals still needed but the processing time on these visas is so long(current estimate 30 years), gramma will be a centurion before the application ever hits a CO. AFAIK, medicals are not needed for a bridging visa.
  10. I've seen quite a few naturalized Australians that still keep their Malaysian passports and never inform their government about the aussie one. Dual citizenship is prohibited in Malaysia. She won't need a visa if visiting for less than 3 months on her aussie passport. If you are dead set on getting her two passports then probably get her the Malaysian passport first and look into getting a declaratory visa from Australia. Later on, she can apply for a Australian passport and keep both until/unless she gets caught and her Malaysian citizenship is revoked. Apparently Malaysian immigration officers are aware of this situation and don't care much. PS: Seek proper advice. Use the forum for ideas only and not take them as professional advice.
  11. You are probably right. The dependence can also be partial and depends on how much she gets from the state and if the OP or his dad have been contributing to her financial needs on a regular and significant basis.
  12. Agree with CaptianC. When position title and or responsibilities change it can be considered a different job/career episode.
  13. c. Yes if he wants to claim points for those periods of work experience. Make sure the agent he is talking to is MARA registered. I would get in touch with one of the agents that contribute here regularly. Plenty of good ones on here.
  14. Is your gramma financially dependent on you or your Dad? I am not sure if the 838 visa will get a bridging visa but could be an option. Current processing times are like 30 years or something but if she gets a bridging visa then that won't really matter. https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Visa-1/838- Make sure you or your dad are financially secure before this big move. "We can work it out" is a good attitude in life but without a big picture and prior financial commitments this can be a very costly (financially and emotionally) exercise.

    173 query

I know someone who went to Bali for 2 days. The process is very streamlined as long your CO is informed well ahead of time.
  16. Asking out of general interest. All these Temporary visas being offered for retirees/investors. What happens when they get too told to live by themselves - do they have access to aged care(subsidised or self-funded)?
  17. Is this an AUD cheque? https://www.border.gov.au/Forms/Documents/1440.pdf https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Visa/Fees/how-to-pay-for-an-application
  18. I've seen plenty of people with type 2 diabetes migrate here. The potential gain from claiming expenses by using an agent that works for the company will seem insignificant compared to putting up with potential delays by not doing things right. Deffo consult a good agent. wrussell who posted above regularly contributes here.
  19. Need a bit more information. What visa are they on? If they are PRs - how long ago were those visas granted? Traveling overseas for short trips is almost never a problem as a PR. Even if they are not eligible for the regular RRV, they can always get a 1-month RRV to go overseas and come back.
  20. Start by reading this booklet - https://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/sites/default/files/shado/About%20Us/Migration%20Skills%20Assessment/msa_booklet_-_5august2015.pdf If you can get assessed as a Professional Engineer then you can get up to 15 points for your degree and up to 10 points for relevant experience.
  21. True. Current processing time for 864 is under 6 months. The 173/143 are about 2 years. With so much demand for contributory places, the processing time keeps going up constantly. In 4 years time, it'll likely take close to 3 years for contributory visas.
  22. There is also a 1-year option and if all else fails a 3-month option as well.
  23. Was he asked to leave Australia? That doesn't make sense as only the re-entry permit expires not the PR status.
