  1. I know the opening posters pain, I left a job as my other half wanted to go to oz then she got home sick, now I'm on the dole, cold and bored. Dreaming of a way back.
  2. ya i'm back home now, my girlfriend got a job as a nurse on the 457 visa so as many of you know it took 7-8 months to get so she was all enthusiastic to start, but I honestly think it was not helped by her friends we had nothing but going away parties for the last month and then when in Sydney they did not give her a rest with constant phone calls, Skype and facebook. I've heard many say modern technology helps with homesickness but I think it can also be a problem.
  3. Hi, I've read a good few of these threads about people getting homesick. My own situation is my girlfriend was homesick from the moment the plane left London, after 4 months I loved Sydney but no mater what I tried I could not get my girlfriend settle. She had a job arranged and new school friends living in Sydney, I had no job and no friends and settled from day one.
  4. haha did you get this the wrong way around? you actually want to bring food back from oz, I can't think of one thing I'd bring back, I'm not saying the food is bad here only that I can't think of one food that is better than you find in the UK, oh maybe mangos but I don't see that is feasible.
  5. Just to say if you move to a new country you're usually not entitled to any social welfare, so until you get that job you're going to eat into your savings. You'll eat into your savings very quickly in Australia. I'm moving back to Ireland soon and I'm still eligible for unemployment benefit so at least this will pay my rent until I get back working.

  7. I'm off to oz soon, one thing I've been hoping for is great fruit not like the muck you get in Tesco, i hope it tastes as good as it looks:biggrin:
  8. Not the UK coming from Dublin, but I've looked and Ireland has the same reciprocal health care with Australia as the UK, unless there is something I'm missing. The only problem I see is I'm not sure when off date will be because don't have visa yet, what did you do?, get 21 day insurance from a predicted date when you thought you would be leaving. The first part of our visa is done company got number and applied on line so hope to have visa in a few weeks so lets say I say Octotber 1st is off date would it be acceptable to be just covered from october 1st to october 21st Thanks David
  9. Hi all, So I'm told I have to get private health insurance to comply with my 457 visa requirements, It then says when I'm in Australia I may sign up with Medicare, so does anybody know initially for my visa how long my policy has to be? Most quotes I am getting all are for 12 months. Thanks David
  10. Hey All, My Girlfriend wanted to get a job in Perth as a paediatric nurse, she wanted to get 457 visa sponsor but could not get a call back from any hospital she applied for, agencies told her to come on the 1 WHV but I was looking to come de-facto on her visa and I am to old for the WHV. So she applied to hospitals in Sydney and got offered a sponsored job in a children's hospital within a week, so getting the visa sorted and hopefully be off in a few weeks. So Perth must be fully staffed but there HR did us no favours by never replying to any of her applications, while Sydney was very efficient.
  11. hi just wondering, i'm arriving on 457 visa in the summer, once i get my car cleared can i then sell it or do i have to be resident for a while?
  12. Hey All, Great thread Just wondering what you think about transporting a mazda6 2008 Diesel to Perth from Dublin. After doing a bit of research myself i am more siding to not shipping it as it seems minimal what i would be up after all is done. Not sure how easy it would be to sell on, how popular are diesel cars in Australia? from looking at oz car sites seems petrol automatics make up most of the market. Great full for any advice..
