I would say electrician general. thats the one I got. I am an industrial/commercial install spark unless you are an instrument tech or similar I think general is the way forward, then you can get Aussie ticketing later for specific areas. good luck

As a friend of mine always says "might as well have no money in the sunshine, as no money in the rain" i say definitely go for it Kooky! i am going to become a professional backpacker when I get over live in a van, pick tomatoes or any other odd jobs.. actually I have a small business plan, but right now I am in the same kinda head space as you, and need 6 months or so of no stress.. Think it's all about your outlook. what works for one, won't work for another... think anyone who is uprooting and moving to the other side of the world, is doing it cause they want change... Changing careers too is maybe too scary for some folk to consider?? Good luck

The level 3 nvq shouldn't be hard for him to achieve. also like above said I wouldn't worry to much about proving work experience. I have been self employed all my working life, mostly small jobs. I have ridiculously low earnings. Pm me if you would like the number of a fantastic guy, based in cork (Ireland), but he helps out a lot of guys from the uk. he specialises in trades people getting visas. i was let down big style by a well recognised visa agency firm, that often get great press on this board. After they had completely wasted my time and emptied my pockets I went this this guy, who made the whole thing so simple... And for about a 6th of the price that the other agency was charging! And no, I'm not getting commission. just believe in credit were credit is due..

Hi guys have seen several companies now running online white card (construction) and RSA (alcohol service) tickets. it looks on the surface like a good idea to get these before landing. One less thing to do when I get there. And it keeps different working options open. anyone any experience with the online method? ie any dodgy firms to watch for? Or any particularly good reports? thanks good luck

What shipping company did you use? im not intending bringing any house hold things. just tools, large tool chest, saw stands etc. not a lot of stuff, far too little to warrant a shipping container, even a 10 foot one. Too big and bulky to box up as a part load. one of them move cubes would be perfect, but alas the Irish Sea proves to be a fearsome stretch of water than 7seas don't operate across. the tools are worth too much to leave behind.. I'd sooner leave the girlfriend behind than some of my tools!! i would definitely transport them to any port in Ireland that I could ship them from. i might even consider taking them to Scotland/England and having them shipped from there. long winded way of asking, has anyone any suggestions? Move cube style transport from Ireland (preferably north, but not necessarily) thanks good luck

I will definitely be hounding you for info nearer the time of arrival grey sky, when we were there before (2009) we were able to register a van by having a couple of nights booked in a campsite and producing receipt. I am (maybe naively) assuming that I will be able to obtain drivers licence with the same set up. Insurance would not be an issue, third party insurance with rego of van. It will be something in the line of a 1990's hi ace, so no big expense involved. medicare I will definitely be looking into.

Got word this morning that my residency (189) has been granted and I just had to tell someone ! :wink: 2. Was wondering if any of you that migrated to Oz have chosen a life on the road? We will be moving in the next 6 months from Ireland to WA, but I am having real doubts about throwing down anchor. I kinda fancy the idea of living like a glorified back packer, definitely for the short term as living in a hi ace is considerably cheaper than living in rental accommodation.
