  1. DARWIN MEET UP Hey guys, as previously mentioned, I am new to Darwin and keen to meet some new friends. I thought it would be nice if we could all get together this coming weekend at the Oyster Bar at the Waterfront as it's pretty central, has good access and you can grab a soft drink, alcoholic beverage and food. This event is free - you just turn up, buy your own drink and any food that you fancy and then meet some new people. I've done this sort of thing before in Adelaide and it's a great way of meeting other people. You don't have to be a POM to come along - anyone of any age, background, etc is welcome. For anyone who is nervous or shy, feel free to Private Message me on here and I will give you my phone number and I can meet you in advance if you like :-) Here's the link to the menu too just in case you plan to eat. http://www.oysterbar.com.au/darwin/menu I look forward to meeting a few new people. Cheers, Karen
  2. Hey Jessica, I'm just moving to Darwin for a 6 month work contract so thought I would make a few friends whilst I am in town - I'll be back to Adelaide at some point
  3. Hello everyone, I'm a 35 year old Welsh lass, new to Darwin (but have been in Aus for 5 years), if anyone is keen to make new friends and catch up for a cuppa then let me know. Cheers! Karen
  4. Thanks CK!! Am loving the Bay and Forest suggestions - both really appeal to me and thanks for the heads up about the humidity - i suspect that's going to be a challenge!!
  5. My parents lived in Tortosa, Tarragona, northern Spain for 6 years - they didn't speak the language fluently, but attended classes, got a tutor and learnt enough to get by (be advised that not all of Spain speak Spanish - some areas use Catalan!!). They left 2 years ago, and have friends (expats from UK) that are just begining to leave now - unfortuntely they're not having a good time of it thanks to the economy and exchange rate. Spain is a fantastic country and they have a really great, laid back way of life (I always think of the word "manyana" which means "tomorrow" - it can all wait until tomorrow!!), however if you're going there then prepare for a totally different way of life, some examples would be how the various towns and cities are governed (the mayors have very strong influence and power in each city or town, so things like applying for planning permission etc can be as easy or as hard as the local mayor/ authorities want to make it). On the up side, my family found the locals extremly friendly, and despite not speaking a word of Spanish/ Catalan myself I found that the locals were all too happy to engage in some charades and much pointing/ miming to help me be understood!! For my experience I found the cities clean, public transport ran on time and they had a lot of fiestas (festivals). Good luck on your adventure!! x
  6. Thanks for the insight Boomerang! I wasn't aware of the lack of daylight saving, luckily, coming from Wales, I'm prepared for anything that involves rain, clouds and sheep (they do have sheep in Brisi don't they??? Ha ha) Seriously, though, it's good to hear about the not-so-great aspects of a city....what is it they say? "Prepare for the worst but hope for/ expect the best"? Anyone else got any good advice? x
  7. Thanks for the info!! Looks really good - am starting to get excited now :-)
  8. Hello everybody! I hope you're all well. My partner and I will be moving to Brisbane in March and, since neither of us have ever lived their before, we're wondering what to expect and if you lovely people have any recommendations for places to visit/ things to do there? My partner is from Adelaide (born and bred) and I'm from Wales, UK. We don't have any children and are both 28 & 30 (respectively). Any suggestions would be most helpful, and equally if there's anyone moving to Adelaide then feel free to ask for more information; we're happy to help

    Totally Lost

It sounds like you've already made the decision in your head. There's a lot of good advice on here, but at the end of the day it's down to you and your partner, whatever you do, good luck!!
  10. I'm not having a good day today - I suppose it helps if you SAVE the signature once you've changed it!! Ha ha
  11. Oops!! Sorry, didn't realise! I've put it in my signature now, thanks for the info
  12. Hey ladies and lasses, I hope you're all well. I joined this site for the first time this week, I've been a member of www.pomsinadelaide.com for about a year and thought I would broaden my horizons a bit so here I am! I've been busy blogging and have shared the blog on PIA, but thought I would share it with you guys too....I know there's a fair few people on the boards that are thinking of coming to Australia and would like to know more about what to expect and what it's like.... Karen
  13. Wow, some interesting stuff on here! My partner and I may be moving from Adelaide to Gladston in March (he's been offered a job and we're weighing up the pros and cons right now). Having spent 6 months living and working Whyalla, SA (loved it), and coming from a small village in Wales, I suspect I can live almost anywhere as long as the people are friendly :-) If anyone's got any more information about Gladstone then please feel free to share, we would love to know more!! K x
