  1. My mistake, you are quite right. I can do either with my profession, so I am going to go for the general.
  2. I think you have to sit the general test rather than the academic. Correct me if I'm wrong though as I am looking to book one!

    Nerves?

Chemical / Process Engineering. I don't really mind which state, but I was probably going to try WA first as that's where I seem to be getting all the positive feedback from. Are you in engineering as well?

    Nerves?

Probably not, but I might as well ask all the same!

    Nerves?

Thanks for that! I was planning to call the interested ones again anyway before I left. I've checked out the licensing, and I think I'd need to join Engineers Australia. It does sort of seem reciprocal with the professional body in the UK, but it is good to know anyway! Anybody else with any advice or tips?

    Nerves?

OK, so here's my situation. I was granted a work visa last August, and since then have been applying for jobs from the UK. My plan was always to give it until Christmas applying, and go if I was offered a job before then. If I had not been offered a job by new year, I would go to Australia anyway and start the hunt there. I've had a couple of phone/skype interviews from various companies, but no luck. Several other companies have told me "we'd be interested, but you really need to be in the country" sort of thing. From what I've gathered, in my field generally you need more experience to be recruited from overseas (~10 years compared to my 2) Now the situation is I need to quit my job in the uk, and make the move out there. I'm not getting cold feet, but the idea of giving up decent paid work and moving to the other side of the world without any guarantee of work is sounding a bit daunting! I'm just wondering if anybody else has been in the same situation; could anybody give any advice, support or warnings? Thanks for reading!
  7. It seems like they have companies there which are in my field..... I already have a visa, so I don't really need to bother with the seminars or anything. It's only 20 minutes from where I live so I might give it a go...
  8. Thanks for that! Where is the website for the officially organised government ones though? I can't seem to find it?
  9. http://www.expo-australia.com/uk.aspx Anybody planning to go to one of these? Anybody been before? Are they any good or a bit of a scam? Cheers
  10. Yep, I think I've got a pretty ozzified resume. Emphasising skills and achievements. However, it is quite hard to find a reasonable template or guide out there on the internet; do you have any good links? It seems that many of the guides and templates are for more generic roles, but the type of job I am looking for is quite specific, which makes it a little bit harder to know how to do it. Any advice please?
  11. Thanks for your advice! I'm already tailoring my application for each job. I can imagine it must be a bit tedious for recruiters to keep reading "I am self-motivated and a good team player" over and over again! What you've said seems to tie in with what I've heard: people with more experience (i.e. superintendents) are more likely to be looked at from overseas, than lower level people (I've been working for two years since graduation). Good luck to you and your husband too!
  12. Hi, just wondering if anybody is in this field? I have a work visa, and have been firing off job applications for a couple of months, but have had no luck yet. Have any other engineers been in the same position? Do people mainly have to wait until they arrive in Australia to get interest from recruiters, or do most people get jobs before they leave? The thought of giving up work here and heading over without a secure job is a bit scary! Thanks for any advice!
