  1. Hi all, bit of a long-shot. I'm an ICU nurse but for the last few years have worked as a clinical specialist for a medical device company (specifically therapeutic surfaces, beds, cots and lots of pressure ulcer prevention education as I've also done my post reg studies in tissue viability). I have AHPRA (previously worked in ICU in Sydney), and have just activated my 189 PR visa.. Does anyone one have any recommendations for a recruiter who would specialise in this type of role for the Perth areas? Thanks.
  2. Where was this solicitor that certified your docs for £30? I need some docs certifying....when I had them done last time I was able to use a solicitor I'd used for a house sale, and cos he'd made his money from me for that, he certified my docs for free. Not sure if 3 years down the line he'd be willing to do it again, and I know they'd probably charge a fortune.
  3. Thanks melanie79 - I already have AHPRA registration, so it looks like the modified assessment is all I need :-)
  4. I know this has probably already been asked (but I'm not seeing a post) - what's the difference (apart from $500) between the modified and full anmac assessments?
  5. I used Australian Vanlines for sending a few boxes and my bike back to the UK....they were really helpful and I negotiated a better price with them after getting a few quotes - basically I got them down cheaper than they originally quoted. A few things were damaged that had made it to Oz in one piece, but nothing I couldn't sort out or worry about...Happy Packing!!
  6. when I sent stuff over to Oz (and then back again to the UK) the list was quite brief, but for each item I had to assign a value (for customs and insurance purposes), but it was a case of putting things like 5 x hardback books, value £100 (oh and don't forget to say everything is over a year old if thats the case as they can potentially charge import duties on new goods), bed linen value £100, clothing/coats value £200 etc etc. I also made sure that I put all shoes near to the top of the containers, had them scrubbed/re-heeled before packing too. I sent 10 large boxes to Oz, had to pay for them to be inspected (always a mistake going to pick them up on a quiet mid-week day), and they opened up just three boxes, and it was the shoes he was interested in...although when he saw they were ladies dressy shoes he just asked if all my shoes were similar (to which I said yes) and he gave up then. That little charade cost me over $100... enjoy your packing! I promise you, when you get your boxes at the other end, it feels like Christmas as you marvel over your stuff (then immediately wonder why on earth you bothered sending it over lol) x
  7. I know the backpacking hostels generally have noticeboards with casual/short-term vacancies...and as the barry79 says, going into a bar with your smile and your CV will also bring results. If you are prepared to work, for minimum wage, you'll get sorted! x
  8. I went on my own having never been near the place before - and yes, it's scary, but a great adventure, and challenging yourself, taking yourself out of your comfort zone makes you grow :-)
  9. Hi Dave (and sorry to the OP for hijacking the thread) but just wondered how the job was going, and what you think of it down there in Victoria...what made you decide to go there? I'm an ICU nurse and am considering returning to Oz, specifically Melbourne (hence my questions)
  10. Glad you got back safe and sound davethebear, and it sounds like you're having an absolute blast! Good on ya!! I've been back from oz almost a year, and pine to get back there - however, last week I had to go to south devon to work, so stayed over the weekend (camping lol) and I have to say I was blown away by how totally gorgeous it was down there. I haven't done the SW for 15 years, and the traffic/journey to and from there always put me off. But now I'm converted, and have to say Dartmouth and similar places made me proud to be a Brit!! However, fickle as I am, back up north now and wondering what on earth has happened to our summer....oh and craving a tasty pasty, beer, and cream tea! Welcome back davethebear - hope you keep feeling the same as you do right now :-)
  11. I lived in the city in Sydney, by myself on a gross salary of $70k (more than I earned in the UK), but my cost of living was higher. So, I did without some stuff, scaled down things a little - and to be honest I was just as happy, not worrying about the silly material stuff we get bogged down with. My rented apartment, by UK standards, was a tiny hovel (my BF described it as a grotty batcave as part of his 'come back to the UK' manifest), but I was really happy there! My bedroom was tiny - only just room for a double bed, but no other furniture - so at the end of my bed I had a cardboard box with a cover over it, and a tiny PC monitor I used as a telly, but that was it. I didn't run a car whilst there, and yes I missed having one loads, but I used the train to get to work, and walked to lots of places. And (and I may need counselling to get over this) I bought myself a granny-trolley for my shopping trips, although I didn't buy stacks of food - I got meals for free at work, and when not a work it was easier to go local with a mate and eat $10 steaks (that included salad & sides) and drink $3 beers/$10 cocktail jugs. I also did the occasional online shop from coles if I knew I needed heavy stuff like a case of beer/pop/washing powder etc. Only thing was, there was never that much food on my list as I'd never eat it (I didn't have a proper freezer, only a poky ice box in the fridge).. Each fortnight (gotta love being paid every two weeks!) I managed to put aside a few hundred dollars to save for frequent jollies away up to QLD or wherever, and had enough money in the bank for an emergency trip back to the UK when my mum was unwell ($4000 that cost!). I could go on, but if you initially go easy and really budget, you can then see where your money takes you. I actually could have afforded a larger/nicer place, but when I took it on, I just wanted to play it safe rather than commit to a too-high rent then never have enough money to ever do anything. I also chose to rent in one of the most expensive areas of the city (everyone at work thought I was loaded/posh because of where I lived....if only they'd seen the place lol), but I wouldn't have changed living there for the world as everything I wanted was on my doorstep. If I went back to Sydney I wouldn't live in that exact same suburb but would definitely be more open-minded. I proved to myself I can cope without a car, an ensuite, space, expensive furniture and appliances, new clothes every week etc etc. Most of my single aussie friends earned a lot less than me, and they survived too. None of us lived in a show-home, and none of us cared! So, what I'm trying to say is, yes you can survive off $100k, just spend wisely until you've sussed it all out xx
  12. Hi, can I have the link to your brother's agency? My OH is presently in IT...thanks
  13. get married for the 'right' reason....not for a visa application. I have previously gone to Oz on a sponsored 457 visa, and included my BF on the application - we weren't asked for much evidence of our relationship - I seem to think all we had was a joint property rental agreement. However, the almost 2 years of emails that had gone between myself and the oz recruitment lady had frequently mentioned our relationship (just in general chit chat like what we'd been up to, holidays we were going on etc) so I think that was also counted as evidence... Good luck!! x
  14. http://www.ielts.org/pdf/Information_for_Candidates_booklet.pdf I've just been reading this myself which is why I had the link to hand....not done it myself (yet)
  15. if you go to Canberra, will there be conditions attached to your visa? (like you having to live in ACT for a couple of years?). I think (and I don't know your circumstances) you should give it a go in Canberra - like you say, at least you can drive a few hours and be with your man, so will get to be with each other a whole lot more than you do now. Would your man consider a temporary move to Canberra? Long distance relationships are soooooo hard, and the distance between here and there is so vast. And this I know from experience (hence the reason I'm back in the bloomin UK...but not forever I hope!!) Good luck with whatever you decide anyway :-)
  16. Australian style CVs? Isn't this just holding your CV upside down? I didn't realise they did them different....
  17. hadn't seen the original thread (sorry) and yes it struck a nerve with me - especially as I've done a similar thing last year when I was leaving Oz and selling bits and bobs.....so practically inviting total strangers into my little apartment - makes you shudder...and it could happen anywhere!
  18. I didn't know this lady, but what an absolute tragedy. Thoughts go out to her family... xx http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-14178696
  19. Ah see now I'm confused! I've got AHPRA registration as I've worked in Oz on a 457 visa, but thought to get a PR I would need to do the ANMAC skills and IELTS - but you reckon not? Can I also ask (and apologies if you've already said in another post) how you got sponsored? I'm pretty sure I could approach my Oz NUM and ask about PR sponsorship, but my OH won't go and live in NSW, so I need to go to another state where I don't have an old NUM to use as a reference....so I'm wondering where to start with getting employer/state sponsorship.
  20. I might be wrong but I think some shipping agents state it's a no-no - probably because of the risk of contamination to their entire shipment, not just your load, and the fact that the port authority in Oz will probably use that as an excuse to inspect everything in the container (from experience, something they do on a quiet day to raise extra revenue as they charge by the hour). I personally wouldn't bother. You can buy marmite there, and like you say, you can take certain foods with you in your luggage - and in actual fact, having some food with you can get you through customs quicker as you go through the 'something to declare' lane which is always shorter. Enjoy your packing!
  21. I too have started to ping-pong....! I went down under in May 2009, returned August 2010 knowing that boarding the flight back to the UK was a huge mistake. And I wasn't wrong! So now I want to get a PR visa and next time I go, it's for good!
  22. cheers guys. I personally found the IELTS to be just a money-making racket, and potentially quite insulting to us what speak proper English (innit), and have previously worked in Oz on a 457 visa, so managed to escape it last time...but when I go back I want a PR visa in my passport! Good luck with your endeavours too :-)
  23. Hi, I am debating either applying for a 175 visa (for which I need to gain superior results of an IELTS to just scrape the points together), or a 121 visa which requires an employer nomination. Is there somewhere I can go (like, a website) to be matched up with kindly willing-to-sponsor employers?
