  1. So with everyone's help; I'm not going to die. I was pretty sure of that, sorry if I mislead anyone! I still question why everyone seems to underestimate the problem in general: Thanks - I should have compared it - you're right; so here's my research: Current index in Melbourne: 17 (Average 13 Micrograms per Square meter - it's currently "high" for us) Dandenong: 34 I'm not sure that counts much against: 845 http://www.melbournetimesweekly.com.au/story/1231580/beijings-crazy-air-day/ A Lancet study published last month said a record 3.2m people died worldwide from air pollution in 2010, four times the number a decade earlier, with 1.2 million of those deaths in East Asia. This ranked pollution for the first time in the world's top 10 list of killer diseases, mostly because of vehicle exhaust. I wonder what scale "bad air" comes under if our own definition of acceptable, is double digits? 100? 200? Maybe 400 - then double that. :eek:Wake up and smell the smog:eek:
  2. You keep saying one of the greatest, I don't see it: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/property/propertypicturegalleries/9477990/The-worlds-10-best-cities-to-live-in.html?frame=2311071 No sign http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World's_most_livable_cities Ditto above http://www.cntraveler.com/readers-choice-awards/top-cities-in-the-world-charleston-cape-town-bangkok-vancouver-photos#slide=1 Again Don't get me wrong, China does appeal; but to say that there's no evidence to suggest it's detrimental is a bit naive. I'm sensing that it's offending you because of a personal experience you had their some time ago perhaps?
  3. I hear what you're saying.. I understand that but I'm not sure anyone actually read the link I posted. We're talking about a scale that originally went up to 300; translated into "Hazardous" that was smashed a weekend or two ago at 755, leaving the air quality people unable to reclassify it. Is air conditioning able to cope with that? Especially if modern equipment was only designed for normal industrious levels; presumably set some time ago. Anyway - moot point - but just a thought. Currently everyone on this thread seems to have jumped to the defence of "the man"; I didn't think big corporates were that well liked over here. It's surprising that nobody actually thought a company sending a team (FYI it's probably up to 80-100) abroad might choose somewhere safer, rather than just downright cheap! In the UK I suffered chest infections but have been clear over the last 5 years; I'm not about to risk my health and so will apply to the doctors (at my own cost) for a note... feels like I'm at school.
  4. Love it! Someone called Blossom born just inside the hippy era is calling me Soft
  5. I've been told that we have a big meeting where most of the region will be in Beijing for a meeting. While this is great and all, I've got serious concerns for health. China must be a cheap option of us to all travel there, however I am seriously concerned nobody has given people's heath consideration. If you're unfamiliar or wonder why I sound so ungrateful then checkout the Australian: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/chinese-question-official-solutions-as-pollution-returns-to-blanket-beijing/story-e6frg6so-1226560414616 So the last thing I want to do is go there and then get sick; work I enjoy but it's not something I want to get ill over! So - can I be "made" to go? My contract probably says I need to travel, as I meet customers all the time. But this is an internal "all hands" kind of thing. Advice appreciated!
  6. Thanks - I'll give the White Pages a go
  7. Hi there... I've recently moved to Melbourne from the UK. I'm trying to track down an aloof Scottish uncle who I think may be in his 70s and last known to be living in Brisbane. Any ideas hoe I could find him? Any help greatly appreciated!
  8. Not quite; my point was about places IN Melbourne for Melbourne.
  9. Hi there... I walked through David Jones food hall this week and noticed the Christmas hampers are out! It got me thinking about gift ideas for people... So I wondered if anyone had any other thoughts about other places to look in Melbourne? I've had a google too, but I guess half the fun is browsing at this time of year in a REAL shop :-)
  10. I wish we could - 2 year contract......
  11. Just a word of warning - if you hear this from Dodo - the whole internet is not down across Victoria - it's them. And it's been going on for the last two days at least. I was told I wouldn't get compensation/refund. I'd have to monitor how long it was down myself and make a claim. :arghh:Shocking service.
  12. Bodum anything, I ment to say.... Oh and while I think about it, Ikea is here, but it's not always cheaper... not very often at all...
  13. You won't want to buy them here! I noticed there are a few places that will ship here and are far far cheaper. Definitely purchase before you get here I'd say unless you're worried about weight on the container. Also Bodum and decent branded knives are pretty pricey over here (some damn obsession with Masterchef is to blame I'm told). That said, kitchens are fairly personal things so you may choose to embrace the aussie lifestyle and buy local to fit in - I wish I'd brought a few more fancy things with me but am happy with the cheaper end here for other kitchenware essentials. As you describe yourselves as avid cooks - I'd err on the better the devil you know yadda yadda ~Tyler Ps just take the labels off before you ship, no need to actually use them - unless you left the price on the bottom :goofy:
  14. Hi, I've decided to create a topic as I wanted to know if anyone has recently decided to get a cleaner. Certainly not something I would have thought about in the UK! I've been here a few months now and have moved with the GF into a place where I doubt we're really going to have the time to clean everything. It's a great place and I think I owe it to myself to keep it clean but with my work and her study being at odds we don't have much time together - as a result I am considering getting a cleaner. What can I expect to pay? How can I take steps to ensure the person is going to be reliable/trustworthy? How often do you get yours in? Also - would I be able to get someone that does Ironing too? Or am I wishing for too much?! I look forward to hearing your replies! ~Tyler
  15. Check your local listings for second hand LCD TV's. I've noticed a lot of people are upgrading and there's a a serious amount of money to be saved if you want to!
  16. Not sure if you've been recently; but it's more expensive than a lot of other local shops. Definitely if you were into IKEA heavily then you want to bring stuff with you.
  17. Great point... with all that in mind, if I was arriving now, I'd bring extra Trainers, Brand new cookware, bed linen and inexpensive clothes... but in contrast, if you're you're into the latest labels/trends consider the price of these is more than double what it is at home: SuperDry Le Cruiset Bodium Zara And good quality (White/Green) Tea seems to be more expensive.. or perhaps just trendy.... T2/Chinese Tea-house case in point
  18. I'm with "Glad I Moved" that's awesome - would you mind sharing where the best second hand places are to get furnishings? So far I've been looking at Gumtree (over-priced) and eBay (never sure)... And I'm pretty desperate to save money as my gf and I want to furnish a lot of the place we're renting with some nice key pieces - and then save money by going second hand for other items. Any other suggestions or help is welcomed! Just a thought.. Do people post on the forum regularly when they're selling up and moving back? I didn't see anything specific...
  19. Hey all, I've recently relocated from the UK into my girlfriends place in Melbourne. It's pretty small but took her ages to secure because of all the challenges of renting - it's certainly different from the UK where the application + acceptance process seems a lot easier. We've been looking for a larger place and found one that my gf has fallen in love with. It's spacious and in a great location, but has a horrid bathtub that has cracks allover the floor and ideally needs replacing. 1) Does anyone have any suggestions on making an attractive application? The cover letter, application by me with no Aussie (or UK) rental history etc. 2) To "sweeten" the application ourselves we have decided to offer some money towards the replacement of the bath - we love the place as somewhere to live, but the bath is ultimately a bit of a showstopper. It's 500 bucks which ultimately pulled out of nowhere... doe you think this would get their attention? TIA for your help! ~Tyler
  20. Hope you get some more responses on this! I'm looking at what investment options like the traditional ISA exist, and am looking for IFA recommendations also.
  21. Hi, I've moved here from all over the place; Colchester, Chelmsford, <obscure villages> and Canvey. I'm living on the Sandringham line in Elsternwick; which is nice enough. I'm not sure I want to live much closer to the CBD as there's plenty going on in St Kilda. Beats a night out in Dukes....
