  1. Hi, I have also been here in perth for 10 months and had several bouts of homesickness, it is the weirdest feeling in the world, as I couldn't really say what it is I miss about England, but just don't always feel settled here. I miss my friends, but know that it will take a while to build up a new circle of friends again.....I think you just have to give it time, I could jump on a plane tomorrow, but know deep down I would be making a mistake. I also went through the charade of telling everyone how much I loved it here, but now if anyone asks I tell them the truth, that I do get homesick and I actually feel better about being honest about it. It must be difficult being pregnant and your hormones raging won't help, but I'm sure like many of us you made big sacrifices to get here, be sure you definitely don't want to stay before you pack up and leave.....you didn't build up the network of friends in the uk overnight and you won't here,it takes time.....but I have faith it will happen......keep smiling.
  2. Hi Claire, we were in exactly the same position this time last year, had got our PR visas and then the doubt set in.........we have now been in perth SOR for the last 7 months, I also work as a nurse and your estimation of your husbands wage is about right for a level 1 nurse, we have managed ok on just my wage until my husband started work, he had to settle kids first. We have settled in a nice area, and just like the UK there are good and bad areas to live...do your homework before you settle on an area....my sister lives in Gosport, so I know the area fairly well and I would say that your children would have much better prospects here than in the UK at the moment. My children settled really quickly and are in a lovely school. I have had a few up and downs, occasionally feeling homesick, but never enough to make me want to go home......if you want to ask anything specific and I can help please PM me. Its a massive move but life is too short for regrets...
  3. Hi j0n4ld0, I managed to secure my nursing job whilst still in the uk, I applied for two jobs and were offered both. However I dropped from a band 7 job in the Uk to the equivalent of a band 5 job here......I had ten years nursing experience in the UK but it doesnt make much difference when applying over here. I feel it is very much start at the bottom and work up again.....however there is scope to do that quickly, and I don't know how wise it would be to go straight in at a high level over here as it is so different to nursing back home and going in at a lower level has certainly given me room to get to grips with the Australian health system without the pressure. Even on a level 1 wage it is still a liveable wage, at present its just me working and we have two kids and are managing ok with that. There are lots of different types of nursing jobs available...not sure about occupational health, maybe look at the mines, I hear they pay very well. If you want any specific info, send me private message, I will help if I can...
  4. Hi, We have just moved to Perth, 10 weeks ago and I'm also a nurse working in the community, nursing is very different out here, but enjoying is so far...we live SOR, Nice area by the beach, NOR is supposed to be lovely around Joondalup, but I do know that renting and buying is more expensive there. It also depends what your husband will be doing for work, most manufacturing is around city and NOR. Not sure this will be of any help, but if there is anything you need to know and I can help I will. Its a big move, but so far so good.
  5. Hi, We flew to Perth with an 18 month old, you can take a small fold up pushchair for free, which you can use around the airport and hand over just before you get on the plane, if its a bigger one you may have to pay a small amount and put in the hold, but they do have strollers that you can use free of charge around the airport. we also hired a car seat from the company that we hired car from. Don't know about travel cots sorry, just make sure you ask for a seat with a baby bassinet that will allow you to lie your baby down to sleep on the plane. We went with emirates and they were very accommodating with young children, it was a much better flight than we thought it would be.
  6. Thanks for that info GilraenH, trying to get any ingo from APHRA is a nightmare. Hopefully I may be able to start work on time...
  7. Have recieved my letter of eligibility from APHRA, now have to turn up at Perth office with ID when we land in Australia next month.......does anyone have any idea what the process is and how long it takes to get full registration..i will be due to start work on the 16th June and are a bit worried it may take weeks going on APHRA's current track record. Is it simply a case of turn up show ID and become registered.......or is that wishful thinking:biglaugh:
  8. We are due to move to perth next month and were looking at secret harbour or halls head area to settle but we need to find decent schools for our two children....i'm sure everyone has these problems but was wondering if anyone has any children that go to school in these areas and would share there likes and dislikes with me. I have read a few posts about comet bay schools and they seem to be decent schools. I have a child that will go into pre school in Feb 2013 and a child that will go into year 8 in Feb 2013. My older child is currently in a mainstream school in England, but has aspergers and will need extra support to remain in mainstream school in Perth. Any help or advice on schools especially for my older child would be really appreciated.
  9. We are due to emigrate in June and have a teenage son who has aspergers, he is currently in mainstream school in England and doing ok, we are hoping to move SOR and were wondering if anyone has any ideas on high schools that would be able to offer extra support. He has a teaching assistant at present and would really struggle without extra help....I have researched for hours on the internet but cannot find out much regarding help with schools. He struggles to make and maintain friends but is a lovely caring lad and I need to make sure he goes to a school that is right for him. My worst nightmare is that he goes to a school and gets bullied. Any info at all to point me in the right direction would be really appreciated:confused:
  10. We are also going end of June, very nervous but also excited, moving to mandurah area. Good luck to all moving out.
  11. Hi Nic, I have copy of stat declaration that was sent to me by APHRA. if you PM me your email address I can send it to you. Sorry, don't know how do do it on here, or even if we can, if that makes any sense at all....
  12. Hi, If you are going on a 457 you do not need skills assessment with ANMC, this is only required if going for PR visa. You need to register with APHRA and as long as you can prove you were taught in English you do not need to do IELTS. Hope this helps.
  13. Hi, yes you need to contact NMC and request a verification of registration, they will send you a form to fill in and require a £34 fee. They then send this direct to whichever APHRA office you state on request form. You can request this form online if that is easier. Hope this helps. Good luck with APHRA registration.
  14. We flew from birmingham to dubai in may 2010 with a 2.5 yr old. We had a two hour stop over and I was absolutley dreading the flight, but i did not need to worry. She slept the whole flight stretched across my lap and my husbands....needless to say we didn't get much sleep as we were frightened to move, lol. But it was a small price to pay for a relatively easy flight. The flight from Dubai to Perth was the longest flight but we kept her occupied with games and the cartoons and she also slept a good few hours of that flight too. Try not to get too stressed about it, most kids cope really well. Good luck:biggrin:
