  1. Hi All My company has agreed to process my 186 and as of last week it has been lodged as decision ready. I have received my acknowledgement letter and I've been given a Bridging A subclass 010 visa while this is being processed. (I still have 2 years left on my 457) On the Ack letter it says "you may be able to access a range of services offered by the Australian government such as benefits from Centrelink and Medicare. ...... for further information check their website....." I have a 4 year old in kinder so I'm really keen to access the child care rebate. I rang them today and they said that I am not entitled to anything from Centrelink until my PR 186 is processed. Can anyone tell me if they were able to access centrelink on the bridging visa? I have read that I can get my medicare cards by showing this letter, again can anyone confirm this? Thanks a million Angel
  2. Hi I commute from Mentone to the CBD everyday. If you need the loop then you just swap at Richmond and you'd never have a longer wait of more than 3 minutes. My train journey is about 30 mins as most are express trains on the Frankston line. We are moving to edithvale shortly which will add another 3 stops to my journey. I have work colleague who live in Mount Eliza and his journey takes him 1hr 10 mins door to door. As you are getting on the train at the first stop you are also guaranteed a seat. I love my travel time, a good book and its my relaxation time. The only thing that's a killer is if you have after work drinks and it goes on until after the last train (midnight) the taxi fair will cost you home.
  3. Sorry thanks for all the replies... I rang every single creche in a 10k radius and I wasn't able to get a full time place for her. But she has since been moved into a different room and her new teacher is an angel so we'll see what happens from here.
  4. My husband is finished at 5pm so he leaves work, takes 10 mins to get to the train, 30 mins to get home, 10 mins to get to the creche so we pick her up about 5:50 or at the odd occasion 6pm if the train is late. I think the comment comes from a comment made in the creche last week. One of the workers said our daughter was like one of the furniture she's there so much and she's there longer than any of the workers. She also questioned if the train was late and why we were picking her up at 6. I was so angry and upset by her comments that I've spent the weekend now looking at a different suburb to move to so we can be closer to pick her up. I was just wondering if everyone else had toddlers in creche 5 full days? Some weeks my husband works weekends so we don't send her in that day or only put her in for the mornings but we still pay for the full week regardless.
  5. HI Everyone We have been here 2 months and are renting in box hill, its about 30 by train to the city (express). Takes about 10 mins on the bus to get to the train too and we drop our toddler off in creche on the way. (we both work in the city) We are thinking we are too far away from her when we finish work as its a mad dash to catch the train to pick her up before 6. Do you have kids in creche and work in the city? Which suburb do you live in? Having her in creche in the city isn't an option as the costs are way too expensive and we don't get help on the 475 visa. Plus I wouldn't like her having to travel on the commuter train either.
  6. Thanks for that No I didn't register wtih medicare I thought was just automatic! I'll give them a ring today and sort it out. No I didn't need it as part of my visa, don't know why if you did?
  7. Hi Guys Hoping someone can help me with this. We are here on a temp business visa and don't have health insurance yet. I want to take my daughter to see a doctor because she has a really bad cough. Does any one know how much a doctors visit would be? Does medicare only cover hospital visits?
  8. Hi, Sorry I did mean 400/week We found a lovely place in Box Hill, a new unit, and we are moving in next week. We tried a few trial runs and the commute isn't too bad at all. Lets hope it all goes really well!
  9. Hi guys, thanks for your replies. We decided to go for a place in box Hill, it seems like a really nice place, plus not too far from cbd. Please don't tell me now that its bad too lol From what we could gather it ticked all our boxes. Moving in next week. Can't wait!!!
  10. Hi I'm also Irish we we moved to Melbourne just last week (Myself, husband and 2yr old daughter) We have temp accommodation provided by my employer at the moment so we are also looking for rentals. We looked at some in Thornbury (north of city) but nothing that suited our budget. Tomorrow we are looking at about 10 in Box Hill. We've rented out a car for the day to get around them. I am also on a business sponsored visa so we are not entitled to any childcare rebate, however my company do offer LAFHA which works out about 200 extra a week so I am using this for part of the childcare paymemt. I've received some quotes of 364 for full week in creche. If we get PR we'll lose LAFHA but gain the childcare rebate so hopefully it all works out the same.
  11. HI everyone Sorry I know this has been done to death but my head is literally melted at the minute looking for a house. I am working in the cbd and we are in a short term rental for 1 month so we have only this time to find a place. Things I am looking for are: average 400 a month 3 bedrooms or 2 larger bedrooms newer build - not the really old style with shag piles for carpets and dated bathrooms and kitchens. I can't find anything close to the city which is nice, do I need to go further out with my budget? I also have a 2yr old and my husband will be looking for work after we are settled so I need to look at family areas with creches nearby. I arrived on Tuesday and have spent since then looking up suburbs online, should I just go visit them myself?
  12. Thanks for your reply I'll PM you the budget details!
  13. HI I'll be arriving in Melbourne on 19th July and need an apartment for me, my husband and 2 yr old daughter plus my sister will be staying with us for 2 weeks. The only apartments I can find are studios which would be a nightmare with a 2year old. I need to close her door at night for her to sleep. For anyone who landed with kids and stayed in short term rental where did you stay?
  14. HI Myself, my husband and daughter 2yrs will be moving to melbourne in 2 weeks. I am being sponsered and my job will be based in the cbd. My employeer will sort a short stay appartment for us so allow us time to look for somewhere to live. Really nervous and excited at the same time. I will probably be travelling to work by bus or train\tram so don't want too far to travel each day. decisions decisions!
  15. HI Guys Still looking up suburbs to live and I've come across Sunshine, close to the city and afforable rents. But all I seem to read online is about its high crime rate. Is it THAT bad? Does anyone here actually live here? I live in a pretty bad housing estate , I would regualry see fights, joy riding, fires, broken glass so that doesn't phase me so is Sunshine worse?
