  1. Cheers Danny, i do have water plumbing but i don't have my Gas licence here in Australia, i went to TAFE and completed certificate 3 in Fire protection, I'm a licensed sprinkler fitter so will need to possibly attend night classes should i wish to do my Gas. Thanks
  2. Hi all, i'm a Plumber, gas fitter by trade, i worked for British Gas back home for 10 years. I have been here in Sydney for a year now and my trade of installing heating systems and repairing boilers and other gas appliances is pretty much non existent here, i work for a Sprinkler fitting company which is pretty good money and rather easy work compared to work i'm used to back home. I do however feel like i'm wasting my skills a little by installing sprinklers and i am never really going to excel much doing this day in day out, i am thinking about moving to Melbourne to try and get back into my original field of work where i feel like i can progress alot more and hopefully make more money this way. What is the work situation like in Melbourne at the moment for gas fitters and how is the money? Reading the Plumbers union rates apparently you get £40 p.h and 2 RDO's per month is this correct? Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks Rob.
  3. Hi all, i moved over to Sydney in January this year, i came over on a 189... i am a plumber gas fitter by trade back home and used Vetasses for my skills assessment, it says on my certificate that i need to do complex training and supervised work in order to get my level 3. Has anyone went on to do this to get there level 3? how did you go about it and what was it like? i have noticed qualify me can get you your level 3 in 4 weeks, and its all online. Any advice on how to get my level 3 as soon as really? Thanks. Rob.
  4. Hi all, i'm after a little advice from any plumbers gas fitters from over here in OZ. I'm currently working for a plumbing company in Sydney working on a new build construction site, i used to work for British gas back home as a heating engineer. My dilema is that i have been offered a job as a gas fitter over here, repairing / servicing installing gas water heaters over here. its an extra few dollars and hour and i will get a van tools fuel card etc Is anybody on here in that field and how are you finding it? I dont mind my current job but the pays not the best and at times its a little boring and the working conditions are not the best. The gas fitting job is better money but will the work die off in the summer months? and where do people think you can make the most money? i know you will make alot of money if you go to an EBA company and work on the new sites but i'm lacking experience at the moment due to only being here since january. Any help would be much appreciated as at the moment im not sure which job to go for. Cheers, Rob.
  5. anyone ever managed to get in with just commercial plumbing and gas experience?
  6. there are hundreds of building sites in Australia, go to your local sites and ask if they need a driver, im sure they will atleast need a labourer! sign up with a labour hire agency! there is plenty work in Australia, its just a case of being confident and asking people, personally i think the internet is a waste of time for applying for construction jobs!!
  7. Surry Hills or Balmain, or if you like the beach maybe Double bay
  8. Im working for a plumbing company on a new build construction site, its more commercial work really, im working on a large supermarket, liquor store and grocers and cafes including loading docks and car parks. Most of it is nothing i have done before but you soon pick it up, i fit galvanised steel fire hydrants, big 8 inch copper water and gas mains, hdpe drainage, syphonic drainage, i fit water heaters and boilers, sanitary ware also, the work is so varied over here but its great your always doing something different, today i fitted a huge irrigation tank and stormwater pump out system to water the plants on the site. They dont use soft solder over here and they dont use many fittings like we do, connectors dont really exist they heat the pipe and use expanders. there is so much to learn, i learn something new everyday but don't be put off, plumbing is plumbing at the end of the day.
  9. Hi Neil, I have been working over here since January, I was a British Gas engineer prior to coming out, you will be very, very lucky to walk into a similar role over here, I'm not sure what it's like in Perth but I would imagine it would be worse with it being warmer. I live in Sydney. Our qualifications mean nothing over here, they don't see gas like we do back home, they don't even do tightness tests!! There are very little boilers and heating systems and they are a crap! You will need to re train to get your qualifications recognised, however there is a mountain of new build plumbing work over here what you can get into, there is so much work going on in Sydney, new sites going up everywhere. My advice would be to not come over here looking for gas work and just be optimistic and pickup what you can weather it's a general plumber or sprinkler fitter plumber etc! Best of luck if you need any advice drop me a message!
  10. No, you only need a liscence to work un supervised, none of the plumbers on my site have a liscence they are just time served tradesman. Only our main foreman has a liscence. You don't necessarily need to have a liscene before starting work.
  11. Hi there, as the topic suggests, does any plumbers on here work for Billi? I'm going for a job interview with them in the next couple of days and was wondering if anyone has any feedback from them? thanks. Rob.
  12. Im not sure on school fees as i dont have a child, i used a agent called Go Matilda, and the £10,000 was for myself and my girlfriend and the fees etc. No i managed to find a job within days of landing, plenty of work in Sydney, just act confident and call the job vacancies ( they dont respond much to emails etc )
  13. I live in Sydney! If you do decide to come over get in touch. My boss is always looking for new employees
