  1. You probably would have been better off just having the line line as you pay for it anyway. We have the landline and our unlimited broadband is £5 a month, landlines is £14.95.

We do have the landline too but I managed to get the unlimited broadband for free. Who is your landline provider because when I looked a couple of months ago everyone was £17 a month. (Unless paid a year in advance)

Edit: Just seen who you provider is above. I have never heard of them so personally wouldn't go with them. (Nothing against you but reviews are low)

  2. 9/10 you need to get a landline I think Virgin are the only company who do fibre without the landline.

I did manage to haggle with Sky, I told them I really didn't need a landline and managed to haggle unlimited internet for free and just pay the landline £17 something a month.

As someone else has mentioned look on moneysavingexpert they always list offers.

  3. 457 visa holders are eligible for the unpaid leave, no one is saying otherwise - BUT - a 457 visa holder, as a temp resident, is not eligible for a whole range of other financial aspects - inc. child care rebate (which if going back to work may be a very helpful thing to be able to access).

Also, as Blossom has said, if the baby is born with any complications it could present issues for PR later on. I am expecting right now, I have been fit and healthy all my life, was deemed to be a low risk/no expected complications pregnancy. Sadly it has been anything but, and no one could have predicted in advance this would be the case. There may be some complications which will need further treatment, we will find out on delivery. I know I wouldn't want the stress of being on a temp visa at this point... but each to their own - just making the point that some things just happen, and cannot be planned for. So to cover yourself in ways that you can is probably worth serious consideration for the long term picture.

I didn't say anyone was saying otherwise :-\ I was just trying to help the OP but I couldn't find much information just about the unpaid part. That was also why I asked if OP could get PR first due to the benefits that come with having a PR.

I am sorry to hear about your complications :( I hope you and your baby are okay and the complications upon delivery are limited.

  4. I want to see as much of it as possible though :( is it the sulphur smell? Ive experienced that in italy lol its rank

Yes thats the smell. Really interesting place to visit Rotarua once you get used to the smell

  5. I would go to New Zealand when you are at this side of the world Stacey doesn't have to be for five or six weeks - go for one or two. Best time I experienced was in Rotarua - loved it! Apparently they filmed a BBC series called Walking with Dinosaurs there - I could imagine it. Lots of bubbling mud and geysers - fantastic - think you would love it also - something you will never experience anywhere else

I enjoyed my time at Rotarua very smelly though lol!

  6. im definitely going to queenstown! It looks beautiful. I just can't decide to do 2 months in NZ from October or wether to go home for Christmas and then go to New Zealand after new year

I guess the main issue is money see how much cash you have come October and then decide. The great thing backpacking is you can make decisions last minute :)

I hope the current job/place gets easier.

  7. I have had severe depression but at the time I didn't know I had and just thought it was normal the way I was feeling. It was only say a year later when my circumstances changed that I realised I depressetely should have gone to the doctors but at the time I thought it was normal. I have as a teenager harmed myself not for attention as most assume as I did so in places I covered up but more so because I was going through a bad childhood and wanted a way to realise anger built up inside. Though I never thought of suicide I did feel sad and depressed.

  8. The Leeds figure seems about right though I now have more disposable then I did in Leeds and I now live in the south east (our incomes are higher and we have a lot less debt then we used to have). The Leicester one looks really low though my friend has a lot more spare then that including paying a mortgage with a below average salary her partner earns slightly higher then average salary. Also my cousin in Edinburgh is really skint as she pays high in rent and her disposable is more like £200.

  9. Last year I did London - Dubai - Sydney and back, Had 2 hours 30 minutes going out which was plenty of time had enough time to look in a couple of shops. However coming back I had 1 hour 50 minutes and I literally had to run half way across the terminal. Our flight was slightly delayed leaving Sydney, and my husband called Emirates asking if they were going to hold the plane at Dubai and they said no, they said my flight which was in the afternoon was the last flight of the day and they would end up putting me in a hotel if I missed that flight. I ran so so fast and the only reason I made my flight was because they had issues with a passenger which delayed the flight slightly. Personally I would never do under a 2 hour stop over again as it was way to stressful, and them telling us they would not hold the plane either. I know everyone is saying it is fine and it probably will be fine but if you encounter any delay leaving Perth then be prepared you may have to stay over night in Dubai. Sorry to put a damper on just giving my personal experience.

  10. The issue you have in Cairns is that to do the Cert III in Commercial Cookery at TAFE you need an apprenticeship. None of the restaurants want to know, why should they when they can get someone in already qualified. My middle son wants to be a chef, he can't get an apprenticeship. He had one at Wink on the Esplanade and they went in to receivership, he went to Sauce at the pier they also went in to receivership. The only other restaurant to take on apprentices is Splash. So as you can see there are many locals in FNQ who want to become a chef but can't because of how the course is run.

sorry to hear about the struggles your son is facing! My husband tried the apprenticeship route too here in the U.K. But as he was late 20s at the time nobody wanted to know. They only wanted to take on 16-18 year olds as thy received more funding then taking on a mature student. In the end we ended up funding a diploma at college for him which helped for him to get a cook job (no chef positions would take him due to only having the qualification and not much experience apart from 6 months voluntary work). Once he did the cook job for a while he managed to get noticed for chef positions as he had experience working in a commercial kitchen with loads of pressure. Is it possible for your son to do the qualification separately?

I agree wih the comment about chef being nothing like master chef! My husband says its a super stressful job but is really re-warding at the same time but it is a job with such a high turnover. His seen so many people come and go in a short amount of time.

  11. So presumably he would have been pretty miffed if a UK restaurant sponsored a chef from Australia who had several years experience rather than giving your husband as a newly qualified chef the job and giving him on the job development? I know I would be and that's the position in Australia, I very much doubt there is a shortage of people who want to train for most of the jobs on the SOL/CSOL but employers only want qualified and experienced people which is absolutely wrong and they should not be allowed to get away with it.

I understand why it's good for you as an individual - I also went over on a 457 visa but again my government employer could have invested in training people - the first time I recruited an Australian my Australian manager questioned my decision and asked if I was sure they were good enough - that's a disgrace.

In the UK at the moment we have a nurse shortage, we are actively recruiting from overseas AND we have a shortage of training places....you really have to wonder!!

To be fair if a chef from Australia got sponsored because they had more experience then my husband as a newly qualified chef I would completely understand, employers want the best. In fact when he was applying for cook positions a lot of Europeans got the position over my husband. It has all worked out eventually but it was difficult to get his foot in the door so to speak. Yes there should be more training opportunities to take people freshly qualified but in a lot of jobs it doesn't work that way unfortunately. I wish more employers took on newly qualified or trained more in house but its the same in a lot of countries.

I have noticed with the NHS there is a lot of overseas recruitment, in fact I had an op last week and everyone apart from 1 person I spoke to struggled with English, so I am assuming (I could be wrong) they were recruited from overseas. Like you said there is a shortage of training places for nurses so doesn't really make sense.

  12. We don't really have savings. Well when we are saving for something specific we have savings, and then we spend it on that something specific. Yes we should have an emergency back up but we kind of live for the moment as we never know whats going to happen tomorrow.

  13. I think the $78k is to high! My OH is a chef and when we have researched the average salary seems to be around $50-$60k way off the 78k suggested. Why not bring in Cooks/chefs from the other side of the world if locals do not want to do those jobs? If people locally want those positions then they should go college and obtain the qualifications and work experience to do so. It was really hard for my OH to get a cook then chef job because everyone wants experience even in the UK. Several years ago he ended up working voluntary whilst doing a college course just to get some experience. This enabled him then to get a cook position even though his qualification was over qualified, after some years experience as a cook he managed to get a chef job (For what his qualification was related to).

  14. Go for it Stacey..... just remember it is your working holiday and you do what you want to do.......and your WA Surrogate Grannies are here for you when and if you need us to be..... xxx

There are so many nice people on this forum :cute:

  15. Yeah i went to rottnest Island for the day, it was lovely. I really love Perth too, could imagine living there. Yeah monkey Mia looks nice. Other than Perth and where I worked I didn't see anything else on WA. I really wish I'd done the south when I was down there but I wanted to keep my money for East Coast but just ended up wasting it in Perth instead haha. So hopefully get to see the south at some point but probably not picked the best time of the year. Should be nice in the north though

It is hard seeing everything, glad you managed to get to Rottnest Island (I love that place, hired out a bicycle and cycled around though was tired afterwards haha). I could imagine living in Perth too, the OH has family there, I loved how people would just come up and start chatting to you had that a few times when we took my daughter to the park, hardly get that in the UK. Yeah north should be lovely time of year, I think it is still okay at the moment in the south but seasons starting to change. Do you think your try and do 3 months regional work? (I don't think I could hack it fruit picking etc, would be okay if I could work in hospitality lol). At least you have done a lot and hopefully still enjoying the experience :D This time last year I was getting ready to visit Sydney, argh feel like booking another trip lol.

  16. Yeah I fly to Perth tomorrow. Then I'm spending 2 nights in Perth before I fly out to where I'm working. I get to go on one of those little planes lol. Looking forward to going and sitting at South Perth for the sunset, I'm such a saddo lol  Western Australia is definitely my place so far. Although I really loved far North Queensland, I keep missing port Douglas because it keeps appearing on my Facebook news feed

Did you manage to go see Rottnest Island? I love Perth, I remember sitting at Fremantle watching the sun go down was so beautiful! I do love Sydney too but for different reasons. I have always fancied going up north WA to monkey Mia and down to Margaret River (Managed to get as far down as Busselton but that was it). At least you get 2 days to yourself before you start work :)

  17. Congratulations on the job offer :-) hope you enjoy your time working in WA. Do you head over soon? You have your own plan and even though plans change as long as your doing something you enjoy then go for it and don't worry about any negative comments. Look forward to hearing about your adventures!

  18. Glad everything is falling into place Stormy. Windsor is pretty though I have only visited a few times that way. I can relate to expensive rents we are in Hertfordshire and are similar rents (A little cheaper average 2 bedroom is between £1000-£1200). Hope the Mrs gets the job she is interested in!

  19. As a Yorkshireman I am no doubt biased but Leeds is a city very much on the up in terms of investment and job opportunities (combined with decent living standards and reasonable living costs).

It is also easy to get direct trains to London and the Midlands, albeit the London journey can be a major rip off if not booked in advance.

I have lived in both Leeds and 30 minutes train journey outside London. I agree that Leeds is very reasonable living costs, the city is also had a lot of investments in the last few years building a brand new shopping centre. There used to also be plenty of jobs too.

I do like living down south too but would live in Leeds again.
