  1. Thanks Realitynotincluded.... Agreed, you have to love em! He has all the certification to work above ground based on his experience & qualifications, but below you need these certificates! Do you know where/how he can get these "mine" certificates? Does he have to do a course? Do an apprencticeship (what a joke!)?
  2. (Not sure where to post this question... but it's an issue preventing migration, so here goes!) A very, very experienced friend of mine (a Dr of Mining Engineering no less) wants to work in the Australian mines. Trouble is that any job he applies for he is asked whether he has "Mine Surveyor’s Certificate Grades 1 and 2" (http://www.dmp.wa.gov.au/documents/F...neSurveyor.pdf). As these certificates are peculiar to Australia he does not. Already hugely qualified and having reached the requirements stipulated to qualify for the certificates over and over again, does he really have to go through the assessment process or is there a way for his previous experience and education (university degree & Phd in Mining Engineering) to be taken into account in order to obtain the certificate? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as my friend wants to avoid having pack up his life in the UK, to come to Australia to obtain the certificate before he can secure a job. (He already has a visa)

  5. Hi, We are moving out of our lovely family home in the gorgeous Woodlands suburb in Perth (close to the CBD... my partner cycles/runs to work in the CBD every day). Woodlands, aka Perth's secret little Gem, is ideally placed close to excellent schools (Hale, St Marys, Churchlands, Bold Park & Woodlands Primary which has a new "One to watch" headmaster) and the beach is only a 5 minute drive away. Woodlands has a great community spirit with it's own lake to walk around with a nice cup of Latte from the local cafe (people drive to Jackadder Lake from surrounding suburbs to walk/use the excellent playground/visit cafes... it's that nice!). The house has 4 bedrooms, study/playroom, 2 large living areas, 2x bathrooms, 3x toilets (2 in the bathrooms and one extra one on it's own!), Air Con (reverse so it can blow hot or cold), Alarm System, Salt water pool (fenced and solar heated), Alfresco Area, Gardens to front and back, dishwasher, Retic (for those not in the know this is a good feature as it is a "free" bore water sprinkler system, which means you can have nice green grass even in summer and it wont cost you a thing!) and a car port. The house was freshly painted and carpeted for when we moved in 9 months ago. This is a break-lease initially for three months from the beginning of June (to see out the remaining three months of our lease), so ideal if you want to give the area a try, but the owners (who are professional & friendly, unlike many rental agents) will be keen to carry on the rental beyond the three months for the longterm if you are interested. This is a great opportunity to get into the Woodlands area as rentals are rare. Drop me an email if you require any further info.
  6. Another query on behalf of a good friend who is hoping to secure a 457 visa. The question is will his wife be allowed to set up a business after arrival in Australia? I've done some digging myself and it's clear that she will be able to work but not so clear as to whether she will be able to be a business owner. Any advice from someone i the know would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
  7. Thanks ABA for the reply. From what I can gather my friend's company meets all the criteria and some. The only sticking point was last year's loss although this was as a direct result of a year of r&d to adapt systems to the Australian mining industry.
  8. Thanks it's been a great help. If anyone else has had a different experience (or the same) would be good to hear that also. Cheers
  9. Doing a geographical - I take it you were in a similar boat? How did it go for you? Cheers
  10. That is correct Rock Dr.... A little convoluted but an option all the same.
  11. Asking on behalf of a close friend who is looking into applying for a 457. He has a fantastic little business highly relevant to the mining industry but last year's accounts show a loss (previous two show a profit). Will this scupper his chances of his business getting a 457? Any advice greatly appreciated.
  12. Thanks for the reply. Got him into a playgroup today so it's a start! Shall get him signed up for more.
  13. We've been in Perth for nearly a month now and my little boy is starting to drive me (and his 1 year old sister) bonkers! I think he's very bored and needs some friends. Back in the UK he was going to nursery at our local school 3 days a week and had lots of friends but now we're in Perth I'm his best friend and he now has to wait until Feb before he can start at Kindy.... 5 months away! So if there are any mums (or dads) out there with a similarly aged child (3 and a half) bouncing off the walls who may also need a new friend let me know.... the more the merrier! (We're NOR in Woodlands and I've posted this on PerthPoms too... but PIO is my first love!)
  14. Yikes that's a lot lower than we've been looking at.
  15. Hi, We're looking to rent in the North within cycling commuting distance to the CBD.
  16. Thanks Piglet. My partner's wage is with super on top so if I've got this correct his gross take home pay is 80kpa... so we have a little more to play with but not much. I used this calculator http://www.paycalculator.com.au/... hope its accurate. I'm not working at the moment although for the house we've just found I'd happily work a couple of days to make up any shortfall plus its a good way to meet people. After a little more research last night it looks like we will also get a family rebate type payment as PR's which i think works out at additional $125pw. Once again I'm not entirely sure if that applies to us so woudl appreciate any advice if you or anyone else knows anything to contrary.
  17. Congrats on the visa and your upcoming move. Playmates sounds like a great idea! Drop me a line when you've arrived. Still in a quandary about renting. Found the perfect house, perfect location, perfect commute for my partner, etc etc.... just an imperfect rent!!!!
  18. Dear all, We have made it to Perth 2 weeks ago and are now currently house hunting (rental). We are however a little unsure what our top budget pw should be as we are unfamiliar with day to day living costs and utility charges. We want to live the dream for the first year in a house with a pool (we have young kids so don't spend much going out so the house will be our little luxury) so are not looking to save just break even. My partners wage is $80K plus super. We will have no transport costs (buying car outright and partner commuting by bike) except petrol. As for food shopping there will be four of us (2 adults a 4 year old and a 1 year old). The only other outgoings will be for entertainment. Our current top budget is $700pw.... to much? Your advice gratefully received. Thanks for reading!
  19. Hi, We're due to fly out next week (one way ticket) on a 176 visa. I'd like to arrange travel insurance. However, as i understand most 'norma'l travel insurance would not be valid for one way travel and we'd have to return to the Uk to make a claim! Anyone know/recommend a company who specialise in this type of insurance? Thanks for reading!
  20. Great thanks for the replies. Now I know what it's called I can have a good google!
  21. I've heard that new PR's are offered a lump sum payment as an incentive when buying their first home. Is this correct? And if so how much (WA) is the incentive and how soon after you arrive do you have to buy to qualify for the payment? Thanks for reading!
