  1. I just hope we get a chance to see if Turnbull can make any difference to the governments direction before the next election. I used to have a lot of time for him but found the ease with which he spouted the party line around things he clearly disagreed with recently quite worrying. At least Murdoch isnt happy so he has that going for him!
  2. I would say that you would be fine with these as they are just vegetable fat extracts (might be a bit iffier if they were animal based). Your chances of getting them in or at least avoiding a lengthy conversation will be higher if they are in sealed, labelled containers. Just make sure you declare them on your landing card - if you do this the worst that can happen is they will take them away (I can't see this happening). I often have similar things shipped here for work and have never had an issue.
  3. You love him because he is vindictive, spiteful and nasty? What a delightful person you must be!
  4. Cutting science fundings by hundreds of millions and then spending almost the same amount on chaplains for schools. I have never seen such a mob of spoiled, vindictive and spiteful children in public office in my life. If I didnt have to live here it would be hilarious.
  5. We use Virgin with a mix of contracts and PAYG (4 handsets in total). Works out well for the kids phones as on most of the Virgin PAYG plans you get free Virgin to Virgin calls and texts so there's no charge to keep in touch with the rest of the family.
  6. I'm pretty sure they are phasing out the medical expenses tax offset so you can only claim if you also claimed in the last 2 tax years or it is for disability care. I'm going to get stung with this as well as I have 2 lots of braces to pay for this year! In terms of health insurance any of the sites should give you a quote but bear in mind you will probably be due lifetime health loading. Basically you have a year from your 30th birthday (or when you became a permanent resident) to get cover then they add 2% a year to the premiums up to an additional 70%. I think after you have been paying it for a while they will take it off again but dont know how long that is - ten years sticks in my mind for some reason.
  7. Along with almost of all of the rest of the public service. And the ones that aren't out soon will be.
  8. My wife is a primary teacher and we live in Melbourne (so our perspective is Victoria - centric but from what I have heard it is similar in most metro areas). In the 6+ years we have been here she hasnt been able to get a permanent position (or even many interviews) and not a great deal of temp work either (schools here seem to have their lists of favoured temps and you only get the call if none of them are available). There is temp work available but not often in schools where I would be happy for her to work. She has found the whole process very down heartening, especially as she is an excellent teacher (with OFSTED reports to prove it) and many of the incumbents at our kids school have been pretty ordinary at best (its almost impossible to get rid of a permanent teacher in the state school sector and a significant number of the older ones are on cruise control to retirement, dont even get me started on the new graduates who cant even spell!). She has actually started her own tuition business now which fits in quite well with the school run etc and has effectively given up on getting a permanent position. Sorry - probably not what you want to hear but its best to know what you will be facing.
  9. If he wants funding he should apply for a grant like other scientists have to (I believe the current success rate is around 20% as Abbott et al would rather give school chaplains hundreds of millions of dollars than fund science). Then his proposals can be subject to peer review and if scientifically sound he can proceed from there. Whats BS is the fact that Abbott has decided he would rather short cut that process by giving Lomborg our money directly because his views happen to fit in with the LNPs own antiquated world view.
  10. Research chemist - was on about ₤40,000 when I left the uk 5 years ago (north west uk). Currently on about $125,000 here. The jobs that are listed in the uk these days (most of them have gone to china and india) rarely pay more than ₤35,000 and the most common is ₤25-30,000.
  11. To tell the truth it's not the best. It used to be a great little school but the new head couldn't find her backside with both hands and it has really gone downhill since she took over. She seems intent on running it into the ground for some reason. The school grapevine has it that more than 60 families have pulled their kids out this year (4 have gone from my sons class alone) and mine wont be going back next year. It's a real shame as it is a beautiful location for a school and the grounds are really nice. Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear! There are plenty of other good schools in the area but I dont have any personal experience of those so I'll leave it to others.
