  1. It is possible because of the way the Queensland system is graded to start in October in Year 11 and still graduate at the end of Year 12. Be sure to ask the school what sort of qualification your son will have. Does he want to go uni and if he does ,does he want to do a course that requires a high OP - you need to make sure from the school that he will have the qualifications he needs for whatever he plans to do next. It will be tough enough moving countries to move to a very different schooling system making friends etc and get good results. It will probably be pretty hard for you as parents to understand the Queensland system as well as all the other big changes you will have going on in your lives. ( I have a child in Year 12 last year and another currently in grade 12 and I still struggle with the system and ask myself why they do not have a system similar to the other states.) Good Luck with your move.
  2. Hope Island to Kingscliff would be nearly an hour in peak traffic. There are extensive roadworks where the road is being widened from Worongary to Robina. Then its down to 2 lanes and the traffic is busy all the way past Palm Beach. There will also be ongoing roadworks past Robina over the next few years as they continue to widen the M1. Train from Robina to Brisbane will require a change to get to Milton and will take well over an hour, it is called an express but it is not. It would take at least half an hour to drive to Robina from Kingscliff. It's a lovely area but would be a challenging commute.
  3. I know someone who did supply teaching at Mudgeereba recently and thought it was a good school. I would also consider Clover Hill school.I would just go and visit the schools and go on gut instinct as on paper all these schools perform at a similar level. My children moved from small schools to much larger schools here and they have all thrived at school.
  4. I would take your tax returns to a tax agent -the charge is about $100 and tax deductible . Get them to do return and check what deductions you could be eligible for. If you are the sole earner in a family of four sounds as though you should be keeping records of all out of pocket medical expenses( dentist ,doctor, prescriptions, etc) as over a certain amount they are eligible for a deduction, and if your children are school age some of these costs can be tax deductible . A tax agent will give help and should be able to assist if you made any errors on previous returns and will give you an idea of what to look for if you file your own return in the future.
  5. Do you have jobs lined up. The Gold Coast has been a tough place for work for the last few years. Tourism and construction are the main industries and the GFC and the strong A$ has had a huge impact on the local economy and this will continue to be the case for the forseeable future. It would be best to know where you will be working and then thinking about where you live. If you have to commute to Brisbane you would not want to be a long way from a station or the M1. Schools are very mixed some good, some bad.
  6. As well as contacting QTAC you need to find out if she needs to do UMAT. School qualifications alone are usually not enough to get into medicine . Starting another science degree and then transferring to medicine is an option. In terms of unis offering medicine in SE Queensland there is UQ, Griffith, and Bond ( private therefore expensive but you get your degree faster).
  7. http://www.uq.edu.au/international/english-language-queensland-year-12-equivalents - this is the link for UQ looks like she will be fine with what she has for English, obviously every uni will be different but UQ is probably the highest ranking uni in Queensland - more of an issue if she wants to do medicine regarding what her a'level results are. Like the UK medicine is highly competitive to get into and irrespective of what many people say about the Australian education system there are lots of very bright children here with excellent reults who have a tough time getting into medicine. Good luck with your move.
  8. I am not sure you will get any really small schools. Varsity Lakes and Benowa have good high schools so I suspect there will be some good primary schools nearby.
  9. If you are planning to move between Australia and the UK when your children are at the top end of high school it is worth considering finding an IB school. I am not sure that the Australian system ties in well going back to the UK where subject selection starts happening much younger at GCSE level.

    Year 11/12 in Oz

Finishing A levels might be your best course, getting into VetScience is very Tough If he converted to the Australian system he would be under pressure to perform well at school at the same time as making friends and settling into a new country. This link from the University of Melbourne gives you an idea of how A'levels convert to an ATAR ( will need to be very high to get into a vet science degree course) for university entrance http://www.futurestudents.unimelb.edu.au/admissions/entry-requirements/undergraduate-international/gce-levels. I would suggest you get hold of The Good Universities Guide as well which has good information on courses and universities .http://www.gooduniguide.com.au/. Good Luck
  11. IB is an option and you may not have to go private for this qualification, there use to be some sixth form colleges in Uk and in Queensland the Queensland Academies does IB.
  12. I would highly recommend Peter Smith at Bell Place Dental in Mudgeereba He is an excellent dentist. It is worth having dental cover included in your medical insurance as dental treatment it is expensive here. A big plus of Bell Place Dental is that with a couple of the health funds they fully cover your check up and there is no gap.
  13. Coomera was named along with Coolangatta as the worst areas for crime on the Gold Coast - hopefully you will get some feedback from people who live in the area on what its like to live there.

    Should we move back!

I am sure your children will be fine if you move to the UK and also really they are young enough to be ok if you move back again - if you have the means to give it a go why not. Have to say commuting from Brighton to London daily does not sound appealing but you never know unless you try.
  15. Take your pool water to local shop to get tested - its free- every 2 weeks in the summer less often in winter - they give good advice on how long etc to run chlorinator dependent on time of year and what product to put in it does not take long to work out whats right for your pool.
