  1. Hi, I am reluctantly selling my 2007 Ford Focus Automatic Sedan as we are about to travel over East before returning back to the UK... The car is in excellent condition for it's age. If any one is interested please contact me by message... The car is advertised on Gum Tree (Perth).... THIS IS AN URGENT SALE.... If not sold we will ship it back to the UK as it is a lovely car (my wife's pride and joy).. The car is Red and has all the CL model refinements. For it's age it has very few superficial scratches and road gravel chip marks. All in all a lovely car, and would be ideal for anyone arriving in Australia as it is basically the same model as UK Focus's... Cheers, Dave....
  2. No Regrets from me or the Mrs. Obviously everybody returns for many different reasons.... We returned to UK about 10 months ago to Derbyshire from Perth. (we are presently back in Perth, but just for a holiday to see friends and relations). We lived in Australia (with stints in the pacific area - work related) for over 30 years... We returned to UK when I was 69, I was concerned about the move back because of my age, but, definitely no regrets.. Our kids are grown up, they make their own choices in life and encouraged to make the move...We can visit Aust every year if we want to as we have some wonderful friends in Aust. At the end of the day, home is where the heart is...When we lived in Perth we returned to the UK nearly every year for a holiday, so we did know what to expect with all the changes etc. What we find, is that if you are retired and have no mortgage you are better off in the UK apart from cost of fuel. Dave...
  3. Hi, We are thinking of shipping our FORD FOCUS 2.0 CL to the UK when we resettle back over there. From what I understand the Focus I have is the same as the UK standard type.. It is a 2007 Auto.... Just need to know, are there any hidden costs involved when it gets back to the UK apart from road tax and MOT etc. Will insurance be higher on an imported car, will VAT become an issue on a second hand imported car?. Has anyone returned with a car, and if so, are there any drawbacks.. Are second hand cars more expensive over there? We have tried to sell it but no luck, so we're thinking of taking it back as I know at the end of the day we will get offered peanuts for it... What does Ro-Ro entail, not deck cargo I hope... Cheers, Dave.
  4. Hi All, I have a two storey townhouse for sale in the Northern suburbs of Perth. Four bedrooms, two bathrooms, very large 2 car garage. mid Just above mid $k800s.(approx. stg470000 - at present exchange rate - 24/08/2014) Close to all amenities and railway station. Approx 10 mins walk to beach. Low maintenance (no garden - a true townhouse), overlooking a lake and park in a very respectable area. If anyone interested please PM me as I can forward full details. Cheers, Dave ...
  5. Thanks everybody for your comments.... Looking at the big picture, we may look at taking back only what we think is necessary, ie irreplaceable things.... We have sent details of what we wanted sending to Pickfords/Allied just as a tester. This has equated to about a 20ft container, and looking at your comments we may be up for about $k6/7 . After your comments we are whittling this right down to personal things and a couple of antique furniture items that have been handed down in the family (what we brought to Australia 30odd years ago). Cheers, Dave.
  6. Hi All, Can anyone help, we are moving back to UK end of 2013 (or thereabouts). I need to know if anyone can give me any idea of how much it would cost (approximately) to send about half a 20" container or a full 20" container from Perth to Manchester. Could I get an idea what these container sizes are in cubic metres? We are trying to establish which furniture to send back, if any, or all of it. Obviously it all depends on cost of items over there against the value of the items we have over here, and the cost to get them there. I could write paragraphs on our decisions to go back, and no doubt will contribute these in this forum as the days go by, this especially so as we've been over here in Oz for 30 odd years.. Cheers, Dave
  7. Correct,... I worked in the mining game for may years. So in a way I was quite lucky as I was on relatively good wages. And, this is what it is all about. The cost of living in Perth is based on the mining/energy salaries. For those not involved/working in the resources sector they pay the price.... You can't live in Knightsbridge on a tradesman's wages, if you understand what I mean... Such a shame, Perth once had a very good reputation for being very affordable with good cheap houses (that is how it was when we first came over here in 1980) and everything was great. If I was coming now, I would certainly think twice, or consider a different State...
  8. Hi Bassboy. You will be fine. it depends what you want out of life, and, your circumstances. To buy a decent house will cost you about k450 to k500 for a decent four bedroom two bathroom house. No doubt you have done your research and probably know these things. If you decide to rent you will find this very expensive. The cost of food is quite expensive. I was over on the Gold Coast over Xmas / New year and the price of food was cheaper than here in Perth but, still more expensive than UK. If you have relations to 'put' you up when you first get here will be an advantage. Believe me, the resources sector dominates Perth and and it's prices. Cheers, Dave.
  9. Feel ever so sorry for you. It must be very hard. We are thinking of returning to the UK after 30 odd years (yes, 30 odd years - but for different reasons). I know it is really no consolation, but if you were in Perth you would find things even harder. The cost of living here in Perth is astronomical. Everything is a rip off. WA is based around the mining industry, and, if you are not employed in the mining or oil and gas sector on very high wages then you struggle.

    Riots in UK

Hi All, Just wondering if anyone who is in the middle of making arrangement to return to the UK, or, are about to return are having second thoughts considering all that is going on at the moment with the riots. For ourselves, we have our concerns, but are not being put off. From my school of thought, a lot of this could have been averted by quicker action from the authorities who govern law and order. What is happening is a lesson to be learnt for the future. Cheers, Dave.

    shipping companies

Thanks all for the info. Has anyone shared say half a 20 foot container (approx 10ft of container space). We are not sending a great deal back but there will be just a few items of furniture, the six tea chests size boxes will cover our small items, but we will need container space for the furniture. Cheers, Dave.

We are thinking of sending some boxes back to the UK when we move bacck over there. What size boxes are listees talking about, Is anyting about 5ft cubed anywhere near quotes, or are you mentioning smaller boxes? Cheers, Dave.
  14. Guess we'll have the same problem when we come to sell ours early next year. As we aren't in a hurry, we will sell privately and what we lose with the depressed market, we hope to save on rip off agents fees, which in our case would be about $30000 for the agent. Cheers, Dave.
  15. Thanks to all for replies, that a few money transfer problems ironed out. My only concern now is obtaining a bank account in the UK. Though as a Brit passport holder I don't think it is too much of a concern, unless someone can advise otherwise. Cheers, Dave.
