Ours is a little 8 yr old westie, love him to bits but we're on a tight budget and don't know if we can afford it, it's heatbreaking! Our teens would be mortified if we told them their pet couldn't come with us. we're pretty stressed about it at the moment.:sad:

I got paperwork 2 1/2 years ago that said it was $800 for one dog because thats when we thought we would get our visa. But 2 1/2 years down the line we have just got our visa and checked quarantine again and had the shock of my life that it has now gone up sooo much. I cannot believe the flights also cost the same as for a human, they don't even get a seat!

Quarantine is around $800 per dog I was told. It wasn't included in our quote as we had to arrange payment/booking for that seperately.

I went on the AQIS website and the quarantine costs for a dog work out at £1305 for the 30 days not about aus $800.

It so expensive! We have had to make the decision that we will be unable to bring our 5 year old cocker spaniel which is literally heartbreaking:cry: We are due to go in a few months.

We are in the same position, my hubby loves the dog but says we cannot spend that much and that we could buy loads of pups for that much, which wasn't what I wanted to hear. The other problem is that we have spent years trying to convince our 2 teens that it will be a better life for them that this will change their minds again. Its so unfair:sad:

I have just got a quote back this morning to export my 8 yr old westie. Company want £1550 included in that is £725 for flight, £270 import permit, £120 vet to seal crate, £72 crate and other bits and bobs. That doesnt include vets fees about £600 our vet told us and quarantine daily rates and stuff which comes to aus$ 1305. What a massive underestimate I came up with.

We've now a 100 sq foot room, and it's on average 3/4 foot high .. where does all this stuff come from?!

If its anything like ours its the kitchen. I didnt know how much we had squirrelled away in the cupboards until we emptied them but i couldn't part with much because when you think of all the cost of replacing every last item and you would sell stuff for peanuts here because everybody loves something for nothing. We have ended up with at least 30 boxes:eek:

We'll have all our stuff in storage, and I can't see us getting much more than 250 cubic feet.

Your storage people will be able to tell you how many cubic feet your renting so you could use that as a guide. Our storage unit is 504 cubic feet and our belongings don't anywhere near fill it as they should in a container but one company have still quoted us for 500 cubic feet. On the shipping websites a box of L48cm, W44cm and H41cm is 3 cubic feet so if your belongings are in boxes of roughly that size then thats also a guide.

John Mason contacted me last night and said that they would indeed come to my home address and to the storage facility and are used to rummaging around in peoples lofts to give us a quote for packing and for self packing, but would not want to come out until April as we would need to ship in July for arrival at maybe the beginning of September. So thanks for that previous info!

we only sent a part of a container From dublin

- it only cost us about €200 extra for them to pack it all up for us and they had it done in about 1.5 hours. (we had the large room in the house emptied out and we put everything for shipping in the 1 room and we had all the clothes in Vac bags etc- so we were well organised.

We had to pay for packing materials either way- which was about 100-150 more.

Which shipping company did you use and did they tell you how many cubic feet your goods would take up in the container? I was told that I had 500 cubic feet and that it would take 2 days to pack or 1 day if I packed the boxes myself, I couldn't believe it!

Yes we paid what they quoted. Any import duties and quarantine fees are excluded as you pay them direct to AQIS / customs. Not sure on your volume, we had sole use of a 40ft hi cube container for our stuff. As for getting a couple of grand off.............you're kidding. The less stuff there is, the less there is to pack, the less difference self packing will make.

It would be great if they would give you a breakdown of how much of the quote goes on the actual shipping and how much for packing so that you can see whether its really worth your while self packing because i'm worried about the insurance side of things. I know that the goods I have don't hold much value individually, but to not cover breakages, I'm a bit bothered about but it's a chance I might have to take.:eek:

Yes there was a huge difference. Saved ourselves about £3k by self packing.

 

I think you're getting confused over what they are asking you. It's normal for them to come and see all the goods that you have, be them pre packed or not so they can assess the volume of goods you have in cubic feet. Some of our stuff was in storage so I took them there to see it and to our house also for a full quotation.

Thanks for that. I didnt think they would come out to a few different locations to see all our stuff but i suppose if they want the work they will. Did you pay the price quoted or did you have any further charges added on at a later date?

The shippers could only give us a rough quote for them packing up to 500 cubic feet is that a 20 ft shared container? as £2900 would you have any clue as to how much they may get it down to if we self pack? It would be brill if we could get a couple of thousand off.

We self packed a 40ft container for our move, it was very close between Allied Pickford and John Mason, with Mason's being better in the end.

Can I ask did you get quotes for them to pack your goods as well as self pack and if so was there a huge difference?

I called at the offices of anglo pacific and told them our situation and they said they couldnt give us a price without seeing everything in the boxes. I really don't want to open the contents of all 40 boxes just to put them all back again, and if they brought their boxes so they know exactly how much we have we might not like their prices.

My family and I are hoping to move to NSW in Sept 11. At the moment we are living at my fathers house so all our belongs are in storage and it has cost us way more to store than what the items are worth i was gutted when i worked it out. Now its going to cost a whole lot more to get them over there, but, seeing as they are more or less packed i wondered which removal companies would let you pack your own stuff and does it work out a lot less? :eek:

I also wear an hearing aid in one ear only though with moderate hearing loss, when i went for my medical the panel doc just made sure that i could hear enough of what he was saying in a normal conversation and said it was fine. I wasn't the main applicant though so it might/might not make a difference whether your job depends upon your hearing abilities. Not to sure about your other question maybe someone else may care to enlighten us?

people that have tried this route have reported that the migrant fares are equivalent to a normal fare + the cost of the excess baggage = so no saving...

According to Qantas, they do good deals on Migrant flights and if you haven't activated your visa's yet they will allow 40KG of baggage per person.....

Quantas was the quote given to us on the site that the aus gov gave to us with the visa approval and it was way above a normal return flight we were really shocked. I might ring Quantas instead like you said it might be worth a try direct.

Myself, my wife and 2 teenage kids have just got our PR visas. I have been looking at flights online for probably August 2011 but can't find any good deals on one way migrant flights. One way seems to cost as much as a return. Is there such a thing or am i looking in the wrong places?

Checkout the Orimbah Tafe as well thats only around twenty minutes from Terrigal, I studied Horticulture there when I lived in Terrigal, pretty sure they do all the trades there,

I had a look at Orimbah Tafe website and they don't seem to do plumbing, so it looks like he may have to travel to Wyong after all. It just seems like a long way to travel each day as at the moment he travels to college back home on the bus and it only takes ten minutes. To be honest, I've only ever read that the Qantas migrant fare is a lot more expensive than the normal one!

Myself, my wife and teenage kids have just got our PR visa's and on the grant letter it gives a website for IOM. When you look at the site it gives an email address as IOMAustralia@iom.int so that new PR visa holders can get concessions on flights and stuff. I've tried but the email won't send. Does anybody know what i'm doing wrong?
