  1. I understand it as being short for POMpous stuffed shirt which was a derogatory term applied to the British Governors and Administrators of the Antipodean Colonies behind their backs by the colonists under their juristiction. When the inhabitants of Australia declared themselves independent after the death of Queen Victoria they became braver and used the term in general conversation. All you have to do is call them an Aussie T**t and they will get the hump and stop talking to you, problem solved.

    A new start..alone!

I would! You've got to follow your dreams and grab opportunites that come your way. Some you win and some you lose, but at least you'd have given it a go.
  3. I find it hard to understand why anyone would deceive a child over anything. All you have to do is explain everything to them in a rational and unbiased way. Then they will think about it and ask questions when they have them, and all a parent has to do is answer honestly. This will reassure the child that they can trust their parents and therefore will be happier to go on any adventures that their parents want to take them on.
  4. Thankyou. Having started to wonder about all the negativity on here this is a timely reminder what all the effort is for and not to listen to the doom mongers. You have summed up perfectly why Australia beckons.
  5. All the best Tony and good fortune for your future.
  6. Once again the luddites of the British Press spread doom and gloom.
  7. No fuss, no airs or graces, a fine actor and gentleman.
  8. That's a statistic based on there not being very many of them compared to other industrialised nations, and the fact that the Yanks the Chinese have said it's not them honest. The United Nations, Governments and policy makers will manipulate statistics to support their latest way of taxing people and then indoctrinate the gullible with it.
  9. I think Virgin boxes are rented from them and they want them back when your subscription ends.
  10. I have to agree with this as well, I'm not leaving because of the weather, although it is a pain it can be coped with.
  11. Although electrical and electronic goods won't be much use in Oz you could try the US for other stuff. On a car forum I use the Australians who are on there use US dealers to get classic European car parts rather than European dealers. In the UK I've used Amazon.com for books and DVDs that I can't get here (and got absolutely stung by the rediculous UK import taxes and Royal Mail charges for handling imported goods). It will all depend on what you're after.
  12. Congrats on the job, excellent news. why? Growing up is over rated.
  13. Yer right there, they moved the bank holiday and the weather moved with it.
  14. My daughter's wedding went swimmingly yesterday and she looked beautiful. I did my bit. Now it's time to crack on.
  15. I've applied for another job today. After the wedding of one of my older daughters tomorrow I will be able to focus more on decorating the house and getting it ready for rental so that we can be ready to just go over when we need to.
  16. We went with letting everyone know where we were going and hence no chain and we ended up getting low offers with the excuse that people didn't want to pay the higher rate stamp duty. One couple even asked the estate agent to find out how soon it was before we had to leave, so we cancelled their viewing.
  17. Sorry for the misunderstanding Pablo I meant our visa is up a year in September. As for our house we had it on the market for a year and people were trying it on with low offers so we took it off. Now I'm doing some work to get it ready for rental, which means more money going out and the likelyhood of pitching up with what we've got in our pockets.
  18. I know where you're coming from Pablo, we're in the same boat, ours is up a year in September and cash flow has put the brakes on. Ah well keep calm and carry on eh!
  19. Whilst it is annoying that this happens we are British people resident in the UK who have visas. We do not have any rights in Australia and nor will we have any until we live in Australia as residents. Although Australian employers do offer jobs to overseas residents, and the lucky ones get help with relocation, they are not under any obligation to offer employment to overseas residents, it's their choice, even if the job is advertised overseas as well as locally. UK law does not apply in Australia the same as Australian law does not apply in the UK.
  20. More decorating, sorting through stuff and I applied for another job. I also looked at the cost of flights, accomodation, joined PerthPoms, watched Aussie Rules on tele, spent time outside in the sun this weekend and wondered what it would be like to live somewhere where we could do that on most days.
  21. Lately I’ve been decorating and generally sorting through our things, I also downloaded a couple of job adverts to go through and apply for, not with any particular gusto, just plodding along. But today I was reminded of the British interpretation of “Teamwork” which turns out to be “Your job is to make me look good and I’ll reap the rewards, but as soon as it goes wrong it’s your fault.” I’m a pretty quiet person who tends to keep their head down and get on with things, but I get really annoyed when other people blame me for their own incompetence. I admit to my mistakes and I also expect others to as well. So I have renewed vigour to get on with things as soon as possible and get out of this dog pit.
