I think your best bet is to have a real good look around when you arrive, people will always prefer one suburb over another, do not let this put you off, decide for yourself when you get here. Where do you think you will find your work as this really will help you decide on either north, south or central Gold Coast. Coomera Waters is nice, but it is a bit out of the way. Also if you buy on there you have a fairly large body corp to pay each month! This is included if you rent there. Coomera; which covers an area east of the M1, has 2 primary schools https://coomerariversss.eq.edu.au/Pages/default.aspx which is a newly opened school with all the mod-cons and http://coomerass.eq.edu.au/wcms/ There isn't a high school as yet, there's talk of building one within a couple of years. The closest state high is http://uppercoomerasc.eq.edu.au/ which is huge and caters from prep to year 12. This school doesn't have the best reputation! The area west of the M1 is known as Upper Coomera. Here are links to more schools, both state and private: http://www.saintstephenscollege.net.au/ http://www.cac.qld.edu.au/splash.htm http://www.assisi.qld.edu.au/public/ http://coomeraspringsss.eq.edu.au/wcms/ http://highlandreservess.eq.edu.au/wcms/ Here are links to read about both Coomera and Upper Coomera and also a link where you can read about all of the other Gold Coast suburbs: http://www.goldcoast.com.au/property/coomera.html http://www.goldcoast.com.au/property/upper-coomera.html http://www.goldcoast.com.au/property/gold-coast-suburb-guide.html Edit to add info on Pacific Pines. Pacific Pines has got bad press recently since a policeman was fatally shot during an armed robbery at the tavern. Before this it was known as a family friendly suburb, which it still is. The people who robbed the tavern weren't Pac Pines locals, the people who live in Pac Pines are normal families. The area has one high school and 3 primary schools: http://parklakess.eq.edu.au/wcms/ http://www.jubileeprimary.qld.edu.au/ http://pacificpinesss.eq.edu.au/wcms/ http://pacificpinesshs.eq.edu.au/wcms/
  4. Each to their own and all that, not everyone could afford or even desire a waterfront home; which often tend to be built on a tiny block of land. Both Pacific Pines and Robina have heaps of facilities close by. Robina has a huge new mall and Pac Pines has a steadily growing town centre of its own and Westfield Helensvale a few minutes down the road. Both suburbs allow easy access to the Pacific Highway for travelling either north to Brissie and it's suburbs and the southern Gold Coast. Brisbane, either south, south-west, the cbd or the northern suburbs will offer more work than the Gold Coast. Both Pac Pines and Robina are near railway stations; Robina has its own and Helensvale is a few minutes from Pac Pines. Oh and the people who are saying these places aren't near the Gold Coast :err: They are in the Gold Coast! The Gold Coast covers a large area which also encompasses the hinterland which has some lovely suburbs. Nowhere in the Gold Coast is really too far away from any of the lovely beaches (30 minutes max) and after all when you're at work and the kids are at school what chance do you get to go to the beach during the week? If I were you I wouldn't decide on a suburb until you arrive, you really can't go on what people tell you. Book yourselves into an apartment for a few weeks and go everywhere! Personally I would research where your husband is more likely to work and take it from there  Here is some info on all of the Gold Coast suburbs. http://www.goldcoast.com.au/property/gold-coast-suburb-guide.html
  5. Yes A person will die from skin cancer every four hours in the UK and a new case is diagnosed every four minutes. Tbh since being in Australia we haven't sunbathed (sunbaked as the aussies say!) at all! Edit: Just found this scary info .... Skin cancer is claiming more lives in Britain than in Australia, according to new figures released today. The death rate from the disease is more than a third higher here than it is Down Under. This is despite significantly more people in Australia being diagnosed with the most aggressive form of the condition. 6. Hi Lurkio, So sorry you're going through all of this turmoil - bloomin' kids eh? Firstly I think it's bang out of order of your son's girlfriend's parents to allow him to live with them without asking your permission! I think I'd be having a few words with them over this! We moved here 4 years ago also with 2 sons; one 12 and a 16 year old who didn't want to come. He had a girlfriend who finished with him when she knew he was moving, so we were to blame for that too! We told him he didn't have a choice at 16 but once he turned 18 and if he could afford it, we wouldn't stop him moving back if that was what he wanted to do. We also gave him a double whammy that he'd have to go back to do 2 more years at school, to get his Aussie qualifications  (mean old parents!) Two weeks into being here he'd made some great mates and loved it! The msn chatting to his UK mates started to dwindle and he started to get a life here. Going back to school was the thing that made our son settle best. I really really hope you manage to get him over, as I fear you yourself won't settle if you don't. Personally I wouldn't wait the 2 or 3 years you talk of as this may cause even more problems, as someone else suggested; offer to pay for his girlfriend's flight maybe 6 months after arriving and suggest that she could get a working holiday visa in the future (don't tell him she has to be 18 - this just complicates things further lol!) Recently I saw my son had put on facebook that 2007 was his best year ever - the year he came to Australia  I wish you loads of luck
