  1. Hi There, We are Alison and Mark, we've been on Gold coast since Jan 09, we have a grown up son who has flown the nest, and a little dog (she still lives with us) We are looking for friends around our age in our area, although when we first arrived we met loads of newbies, we seem to have lost track etc of most of them and others just either moved on or moved away and the people we do know are younger and have little kids so are not in the same position as us. We are beach lovers, have no ties so can go out whenever, like pubs, eating out, cinema and just socialising in general, but would like to do at least some of these things with another couple or two! Anyone others in this postiton? we would love to hear from you, be kinda like a blind date lol !

licence for carpenters in qld - your advice plse!!

Also, how are you finding the work over there, i know everyone is experiencing a slow down, but our biggest nightmare is to make the move and find theres no work an nothing to fall back on either as unable to claim anything for being unemployed. We are living in west of ireland so as you can imagine, things are pretty grim on the work front being out in the sticks and all. With kids to think of, and wanna be sure that we are not moving to an even worse work situation in brisbane. elaine Hi elaine. I am living on the Gold Coast and i have to be honest there is not a lot of work about. I arrived here in early January this year and it was two months before i found work. I did set up a company name to go self employed but the cost of the whole process to get a license was a set back so i decided to just work on my Australian Business Number (ABN). I found the whole situation very stressful. After driving around what seemed like the whole coast and calling in as many places as i could find, i found work with a local Joinery company installing their furniture in a new high rise in Brisbane. I am now in their workshop manufacturing their one off items. Even now i am not guarenteed work every day and they have already layed off a few site installers. My only piece of advice to you is that you have to make getting a job your number one priority even if like many you decide to have 2 or 3 weeks chilling when you first arrive. Get on the case straight away because it could turn out to be months before you are working. Regards, Mark

licence for carpenters in qld - your advice plse!!

Hi ehawton, aussiedreamz has got it spot on. It may also be worth knowing that there is not one licence for a Carpenter/ Joiner. That is what i qualified as! They are regarded as totally seperate trades and a License is required for each. Before you can apply for the Licence, you have to be what they call overseas assessed. This now costs $960 per license. With the buiness management course costing around $350 to $400 for a two day course and the actual license then costing over $400 it is all a total rip off. If you were thinking of starting to work for yourself, setting up a buiness name is around $250. I am sure i am pretty near with the figures, i hope this helps. Mark.

To Take the Dog or Not?????

Hi Denise, I had the same problem weighing it up etc, would it be fair on the dog? would the dog make it through quarantine? Can we afford it? Am i mad? Etc etc you know!! We have a 11 yrs old Bichon friese, being 11 i was afraid for her she had never been in kennels even when we went away on holidays my parents would look after her, so i was really worried. But at the end of the day i just couldn't bare the thought of leaving her behind, like all pet owners will say she is part of the family. Eventhough it costs a fortune about £2'000 all told, we immediatley felt complete when she was delivered to the house, it felt perminent. As far as rentals go its 50/50 isn't it, some will allow pets some will not but i don't think a maybe should stop you from taking your beloved pet, what if you decide not to take your dog and then you get here (aus) and you find you could have had her after all. My advice would be to have 2 weeks here before your dog comes out of quarentine to give you plenty of time to find suitable accomodation. The last thing you want is to regret not bringing her. Good luck Kind Regards Alison x

    worried mum

Hi Mandy, thats a shame you are in sydney, my son plays the guitar too. They could have a jamming session but sadley its a bit far to come. Hope your son finds a good likeminded mate soon. Thanks for your reply it is a comfort to me to know that he isnt the only one. Saying all that he came home with a girl from school today and then went straight back out again, so maybe there is some hope on the horizon. I've got my fingers crossed x Alison x

    Grace Removals?

We used Excess International and Grace removals are their sister company, had no problems with either company, everything arrived safe and sound, did have a couple of things broken but nothing major to be honest. Found both teams of guys to be friendly and helpful and very honest and proffessional. Could have got our container to us earlier but other than that we were very happy with it from start to finish. Good Luck Alison x

Hi Halshaw, your right about the paranoid bit, he doesn't have the confidence he says to go and do things on his own, but we keep saying unless you do no-one is going to come knocking on your door as they dont know he's here do they. I just feel that if i don't do something fast his self asteem is going to be so low that the'll be no helping him. Its a funny age because they cant help themselves and your not allowed too. But i'm not prepared to sit and watch him rot! Thanks for your reply.
  13. Any of you guys moving to or living on the Gold Coast? My son is 17 and in need of some mates.

Wondered if anyone could help with my dilema! We have been here just over 11 weeks. Our son is 17 and although is getting on well at high school and has made lots of mates, whom he spends the whole week with comes unstuck at the weekend when no-one wants to do anything. He ends up spending 3 whole day on his own, he doesnt know anyone else apart from the school lot who never come out at the weekend. Is this an aussie thing? I am getting so worried about him. Can anyone suggest any clubs for his age group or are there any other kids out there with the same problem? We live in pacific Pines. Please only helpful replies to this threat, no sarcasm or highjacking. I am upset enough and could really do with some sincere advice. Many thanks in advance Alison x
