Thornlie - Perth Outer Suburb, WA

The suburb of Thornlie in Western Australia is located about 17kms from the central CBD of Perth, which in slower traffic times will equate to about a 20min drive, this estimate is off course not including finding parking when you actual get to the CBD which can be another story in itself. The drive is fairly straightforward with Spencer Rd leading to Albany Highway which goes all the way into central Perth. Thornlie is in a place where many major roads can be accessed easily, within a few mins you can be on Roe Highway which means great access to Fremantle and Midland in the other direction. Also a few mins away is Tonkin Highway so you can be on your way to the Northern suburbs or south to the magnificent Southwest.

Employment opportunities are not that abundant but if your skill set is food then yes there are jobs around, and off course retail jobs, hospitality work, but with the proximity to just about every area of Perth then getting to work from Thornlie is very do-able The shopping in Thornlie is very well covered for most things needed for families with 4 shopping hubs that offer a huge range of choices, and in particular the food as there are dozens of choices of cuisine for just about anything you might fancy to eat. The bigger shopping centres are not far away with Carousel being only a 10min drive away and it is still the second biggest centre in the whole of Western Australia so it offers all brands and choices even the most ardent shopper might like to have. So all in all the shopping is something that can be easily accessed and for the online purchases of course all the courier companies deliver to this area.

Thornlie doesn’t have a only rich or only poor kind of attraction in the houses and people who live here, as it has a fair share of quality build homes as well as homes that could well do with some major revamping. The suburb was first started in the early 1970s as a place for people to build cheaply, so it still has a good range of big blocks and the current trend is to build 2 new houses on the block that used to only have one house one it. Compared to other suburbs Thornlie has a great share of larger blocks and big gardens, so you can easily have a home with plenty of space for the large house great garden a pool as well as a shed.

The worst street to live on would have to be Spencer Road as it is a major traffic thoroughfare and is very busy just about all the time, as far as the best street I would say any one of the numerous streets that have front access to one of the walking and hiking trails or play parks would be idea especially for younger families. There are 4 schools in Thornlie and many more within 15min driving distance so no matter what age or educational requirements you have for your children there is a good alternative somewhere close to Thornlie. House prices are really good value for money, and with the market how it is at the moment it is a great time to get more house for your money. If you are seeking 4 bedroom 2 bathroom house on a big block with a pool in the garden then there are many that are very affordable. If renting is more your style then the range of accommodation is great, because Thornlie is a good spot to live when you work elsewhere there is all manner of affordable rentals, with an average 4 bedroom house going for around $350 week at the moment, that is plenty of house for your money and without a huge travel time eating into your workday that is a great bonus.

The Train from Thornlie is one of the better run lines with weekday services going every 15mins at the best and at the worst on the weekends it had departures every hour. The station is one of the newer ones and so has good facilities which means great parking, a little shop, toilets and staffing during peak times. The train station has great access with only 2 platforms to choose from means that there is no panic for getting into the station and perhaps needing to run for your train. With the bus stops right outside the main door is another bonus. The Bus timetables can be changeable as most Aussies don’t use them as often, so if you need to get further on public transport best to plan ahead and find out which route is best for you.

Why you should live in Thornlie, so many reasons affordability accesses to so many places and the range of services. Good Medical services is not far away, there is a huge range of Drs and all kinds of specialists that offer services within the area. One of my favourites is that there is a brilliant leisure centre that has 5 pools, sauna, spa and fully equipped Gym just waiting for you to enjoy.  The library is well stocked, the roads are easy to understand, the social activities are plentiful you can easily become a member of the tennis club, the bowling club, join a walking group or a bike riding group, so many choices you will run out of time before you run out of choices of things to do. There is a high number of parks and walking trails that are available all year rounds and in particular you can walk all along the banks of the Canning River for a great scenic walk, even if most people think of it as not a river as it has a distinct lack of water for most of the year. The internet access is high speed and has the latest technology, almost all of the houses are roomy with fantastic size blocks, and the people that live here are a great mix of multicultural groups so all in all it is a great place to call home. For when you want to venture further away from home then the beach is only a 20min drive away the wineries in the southwest are only a couple hours away.
