The City of Whittlesea
City of Whittlesea is situated in Melbourne’s north area. It is approximately 20 km from Melbourne’s CBD. Whittlesea covers approximately 489 square kilometres of area and is one of the largest municipalities in Metro Melbourne. 70% of Whittlesea is made up of rural area and the remaining 30% is urban area which comprises of shops, factories and houses.
The Wurundjeri Aboriginal people were the original inhabitants of the Whittlesea.
The council consists of 3 wards (North-Ward, South-East Ward and South-West ward) and 11 councillors.
According to the 2016 census, Whittlesea had a population of 197,491 people. Half of the residents of Whittlesea come from a Non-English speaking background. The city of Whittlesea is very diverse and is known for its multiculturalism. People come from many countries. The most common are from Italy, Macedonia, Greece and India.

Out of all the suburbs in Whittlesea, the main suburbs are Lalor. Mernda, Thomastown, Doreen, Mill Park, South Morang, Epping, Whittlesea and Bundoora in where you can find the bulk of the population.

It is estimated that the established areas such as Epping Central, Plenty Valley Town Centre (South Morang), Thomastown, Lalor and University Hill (Bundoora) will continue to grow rapidly.
