Demographics
12% of Safety Beach’s population is UK-born migrants being the 4th highest of any suburb in Melbourne and the largest migrant group in the suburb. The Mornington Peninsula is predominately english with the majority of residents being Australian or UK-born migrants. Scottish, Italian and Greek migrants are also common in the suburb. These migrant groups are also the next largest behind UK-born migrants in Safety Beach and on the Mornington Peninsula. German, Dutch, Welsh, New Zealander and French migrants are also smaller migrant groups in the area.
The area was originally popular with wealthy retirees and used as holiday beach houses. However, the suburb has since become very family orientated with popular schools in nearby Mornington/Mount Martha/Dromana. This is as well as the area offering many kindergartens.
The area mostly consists of Managers, Professionals, Technicians and Trades Workers and Clerical/Administrative Workers. In Safety Beach 55.1% of residents are Christians and 35% have no religion.
Transport
The Nepean Highway/Point Nepean Rd/Marine Drive near the beach is the more scenic way of navigating the area. The Mornington Peninsula Freeway also runs along the inland border of the suburb for a quicker commute to Melbourne.
The closest train station is in Frankston however there has been plans to electrify the train line to the Mornington Peninsula in Baxter.
Real Estate
Safety Beach’s median house price is $830,000 (November 2018) and the 4 bedroom median house price has increased by $78,000 to $900,000 (November 2018). Rents have also increased in 2018 to a median of $480.
Shopping
The La Marina Plaza is the main shopping area with a supermarket and a variety of popular food stores. The Martha Cove development of the new Village Plaza is set to see new restaurants, cafes and supermarkets come to the area in 2019-2020. Nearby Mount Martha and Dromana also have their own shopping areas with more shops. There is also a Safety Beach Country Club which is very popular.
