Moreland City Council
The Moreland City Council is located within Melbourne’s Metropolitan region. The council covers closeby suburbs of Melbourne’s inner northern area. The council expands from between 4 and 14 kms from Melbourne’s Central Business District. The vision of this council is for a sustainable Moreland that provides a community with attractive, accessible and safe environment.
History
The indigenous tribe of the Woi Wurrung people occupied an area of about 12,000 sq. km. in Victoria. A major chunk of whom were in the land where the current day Moreland City council is. The year 1994, under the Kenneth Government, is when the Moreland City Council was established. Since 2004, there are 10 single Councillor wards. Council elections are held every 4 years, with the last completed on 22 Oct 2016.
Demographics
The census of 2016 reported, Moreland has a population of just over 160,000. The median age of the citizens being 34 and average number people in a household being 2.7.
Almost 60% of the people of Moreland were born in Australia, while the rest being in countries such as Italy, India, Greece, England and Pakistan.
Just over half, 56%, people of Moreland speak only English, while the rest are multi-lingual due to a vast ethnic diversity.
The most common type of housing in the Moreland Council area is a separate house (56%), the second most common being semi-detached or town/row houses (26%) and the rest comprise of flats and apartments.
Suburbs
Moreland covers 12 full suburbs and a section of 2 other suburbs as well. The 12 suburbs being Oak Park, Glenroy, Hadfield, Coburg, Coburg North, Fawkner, Pascoe vale, Pascoe Vale South, Gowanbrae, Brunswick, Brunswick East and Brunswick West.
Moreland also expands over sections of Tullamarine and Fitzroy North.
Libraries
The council of Moreland boasts of 5 spectacular libraries with huge collections of books that cater to every type of the reader. These libraries also offer a lot more than books, such as Wi-Fi, internet, computers to use, scanners, copy machines. All of them are free to join and offer immediate access to all services upon registration.
The five libraries being Glenroy library, Fawkner library, Coburg library, Brunswick library and Campbell Turnbull library.
Transport
Cars are a major mode of transport used in the City of Moreland. Being in close proximity to the CBD, it is an affordable as well as a convenient option.
In regards to public transport, the Craigieburn and the Upfield line offers train stations in and around most of the suburbs of the council.
There is an extensive bus network in the council area. Some of the suburbs are also serviced by the tram network. Particularly, Coburg and Brunswick areas.

The council offers town halls – large and small for residents to organise their private events and celebrations.
There are lots of parks and gardens around that offer an amazing experience where you can relax and have a picnic or go for a walk or a jog. The parks are very well maintained and always in their best shape.
The Council supports activities such as swimming, sport and gyms by its ‘Active Moreland’ program. There are activity centres in the suburbs of Brunswick, Coburg and Glenroy.
They also offer a community bus hire for road trips as per requirements.
